The blackboard has been and remains the main attribute of learning and a symbol of schoolwork. Its "evolution" went both in the direction of increasing its varieties, and along the path of improving the design.
Types and features
Chalk boards are traditionally considered the main type of teaching boards. However, marker ones are no less popular today, and their combination creates a combined version.
Chalkboards have the following structure: a steel sheet primed on both sides, then a base coat, then an anti-reflective one, and finally a protective layer. They can be melamine, lacquered (enamelled), plastic or ceramic coated.
For writing with chalk today, a special film is also used. It is attached to the blackboard and used like a traditional fixture.
Magnetic marker devices are similar to chalk, but they use a marker, not chalk.
The most modern school board is considered to be interactive; it successfully competes with traditional and their analogues. Its predecessor is also very popular - a flipchart board (a magnetic-marker version on a tripod, a huge “notebook” is attached to it, the sheets of which can be turned over).
An interactive whiteboard can be front projection (the projector is in front of it), rear projection (the projector is located behind the screen) and with a built-in projector. Depending on the underlying technology, the following options are distinguished: analog-resistive, electromagnetic, ultrasonic, infrared, optical, capacitive, laser and microdot.

The traditional chalk board became the “main character” of the famous painting by the Russian artist N. P. Bogdanov-Belsky “Mental Account” (1895). The board in the picture has the shape of a square framed by a massive wooden frame, an arithmetic example is inscribed by the teacher's hand, and around are thoughtful students. Also, the picture is famous for its numerous parodies of the plot depicted on it.
How to extend the life of blackboards?
The basic rules are as follows:
- Chalkboards should only be written on with non-abrasive chalk, especially if there is a melamine or plastic coating.
If it is lacquered, and even more so ceramic, the quality of the chalk is no longer so important. However, ceramics are very expensive. Damaged, worn areas can be repaired with chalkboard paint. - Prolongation of the life of the marker board will provide special markers, while alcohol markers quickly disable it. It must be protected from sunlight. Care for such school boards is also simple, but it is better to wipe them not with water, but with special compounds.
- The time of the electronic boards should be limited. This is necessary not only for the rest of students and teachers, but also to save the resource of this complex and expensive system.
What can and cannot be written with?
The very name of the chalk boards defines the writing instrument - it is ordinary chalk without any inclusions - this is necessary in order not to scratch its surface. But there should also be no sliding substances, such as paraffin, in the chalk - this is necessary for the clarity of the letter.
