3D-printed Batman costume will enter the Guinness Book of Records
News
Irish designer Julian Checkley created a Batman suit with 23 working attachments. The cosplay masterpiece will be included in the 2017 Guinness Book of Records special edition dedicated to gaming.
The development of an unusual costume has been going on for a long time - the premiere took place last year, simultaneously with the release of the Batman: Arkham Knight game. Since then, Order 66 Creatures and Effects has continued to refine the Dark Knight's garb, largely through sculptor and art director Julian Checkley.
The design of the suit is based on the armor from the previous chapter of the game series called "Arkham Origins", and the elements of protective equipment are made using 3D printing. The printable files were actually taken straight from the toy and polished before being sent to a Canadian company that printed some of the parts and 3D printed the rest in urethane. In other words, the costume is as close to the original as can be. The production and assembly of the complex outfit took about a month.
"We've been wanting to make a Batman suit for a long time, and the Arkham Origins version was chosen because it's so buff, aggressive, and generally tough looking," says Checkley.
“The armor was printed and molded for us, after which we brought it to Ireland and started cleaning and modifying: painting, replacing the cast rivets with real ones and making a light, flexible and durable suit to be worn under the armor. We attached the outer parts and the cloak to it.” Unlike many other crafts, this costume is not only cute, but also functional. Over time, the design was overgrown with various gadgets necessary to fight the underworld and simply maintain the image - folding batarangs, ultrasonic generators to scare away dogs, smoke bombs, a superhero symbol projector in the form of a recognizable bat, and much more. The most interesting addition was the built-in flamethrower, which emits fireballs and inspires fear even in hardened supervillains.
“Looking at projects like this makes it clear why 3D printing is so popular among cosplayers. The technology is not only available, but also allows you to make the most complex outfits and accessories in a short time and without unnecessary labor.
As a result, we have not only saving time and money, but also an excellent opportunity to show our own creative potential, which was demonstrated by the authors of the project,” says Sergey Pushkin, head of the 3Dtoday portal. When the costume was completed, the tall, almost 2-meter-high Checkley was given the honor of portraying everyone's favorite superhero during a photo shoot. Cosplayers decided not to build a full-size replica of Arkham, at least for now, limiting themselves to the harsh landscapes of their native Galway. What was it like to play the role of a superhero? “At first you feel like an idiot: I'm 45 years old and I'm running around the city in a Batman suit,” Checkley laughs. “But I got used to it very quickly, especially since I looked pretty intimidating.”
