"I want to know, not to believe!": dismantling the film "The Seventh Seal" | Futurist

Stories Author: Denis Sukhino-Khomenko | 12 April 2016, 20:00

Historical and art analysis of the film "The Seventh Seal" (1957)

One of the greatest successes of the Swedish director Ingmar Bergman, the film The Seventh Seal (Swedish ” Det sjunde inseglet” ) originates in 1954 in his play “Paintings on a Tree” ( Swiss ” Trä lning” ). Three years later, Bergman brought in a strong cast and turned it into a film. The theatrical past of The Seventh Seal is easily seen, so the film, which is close to the cinematography of the 30s, can sometimes “sag” in the eyes of the modern viewer. But here's the story told...

Warning: spoilers!

The plot of the film takes place in Sweden in the 14th century, where the plague is rampant. Knight Hospitaller , Antonius Block (Max von Sydow) and his squire (Gunnar Bjornstrand) are returning home from the crusade. On the sea coast, the knight sees Death 1 (Bengt Ekerot) who has come to take him away. The knight offers to play a game of chess on the condition that he stay alive until he is defeated. On the way home, the knight and the squire meet a married couple actors ( Nils Poppe and Bibi Andersson ) and save the mute maid ( Gunnel Lindholm ) from being raped. The Knight tries to trick Death and flips the board - Death remembers the position, but loses sight of the escaped actors as he rearranges the pieces. In the end, the travelers arrive at the knight's castle and meet his wife ( Inga Landgre ), but the next day they are all taken by Death while they are reading the Bible.

There are many storyline levels and references in the film. In my opinion, the three most important of these are:

1) The name is a quotation from the Bible: “And when he [the lamb] opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven, as it were, for half an hour” (Revelation 8: 1). Traditionally, this place is interpreted as the beginning of the apocalypse. Actually, it is this passage that the heroes read when Death comes for them.

2) Image of Death . In the film, Death is personified as a grim reaper (eng. Grim Reaper ).

Despite the numerous interpretations and interpretations of death, such an idea appeared relatively late, only in 1847, but very quickly gained popularity (which I highly recommend this video, which partially prompted me to the idea of parsing the "Seventh Seal").

3) "Dance of Death" in the final scene.

This motif appeared in the 1350s after the most devastating plague of the Middle Ages - the Black Death. Since then, it has become one of the leitmotifs of many fatalistic works (up to the present - see, for example, Totentanz by the German folk group Die Streuner ). The central idea is that everyone is subject to death, it will take everyone - rich and poor, men and women, sinners and the righteous.

The impact of the film on culture was enormous, today we consider many of its details as self-evident or cliché. I will give only two common places:

1) Game with the death of 2 in an attempt to win it (for example, see . “The terrible journey of Bill and Teda” , English Bill & Ted ' 9000 S Bogus Journey , directed by P. Hewitt, 1991)

Alas, either the pre-Internet era, or the non-spread language of the work did not allow him to disperse into quotes, which is a pity. There are many deep ideas worthy of an aphorism in the picture. For example, when Death tells Antonius, "You all say you're not ready, but I never change my mind."

Some films today use the Seventh Seal more or less overtly. The most striking example is, of course, "The Last Action Hero" (Eng. Last Action Hero , dir. J. McTiernan, 1993): In the denouement, Bergman's Movie Death (Ian McKellen) , who has stepped off the screen thanks to a magic ticket that allows him to travel between the movie and the real world, searches for an injured action hero (Arnold Schwarzenegger) in New York. After finding him, the grim reaper says that he was just curious to see someone who is not on his list - this is an illustration of the protagonist's words that a popular movie character cannot die while films collect at the box office. Alas, the satirical nature of "The Last Action Hero" was not accepted by the audience, and the movie failed at the box office. However, it should be noted that McKellen plays a completely different character than Ekeroth: Death in the performance of the first is silent, unhurried and harsh, while the latter shows it sometimes with a sense of humor and with a desire to talk with his victims.

The Seventh Seal also spawned parodies (from a certain point of view, " Bill and Ted's Terrible Journey" can be considered entirely a parody of Bergman), for example, "The 7th Skol", which once again shows her contribution to cinema.

Another example of almost open references to Bergman’s painting is the Swedish film “Arn: The Kingdom at the End of the Road” (Swedish Arn – Riket vid vägens slut , dir. P. Flint, 2008) based on the trilogy by J. Giyu : At the beginning of the film (c. 1187), Arn Magnusson, a Knight Templar, returns home to Sweden from the Holy Land after a 20-year absence. To tell the truth, The Seventh Seal is not Giyu's only source of inspiration: the whole line with the salvation of Saladin, apparently, was borrowed from Walter Scott's The Talisman, but that's another story.

Other films implicitly refer to the 1957 masterpiece. And even if the screenwriter did not rely on The Seventh Seal at all, Bergman's influence can still be traced. Below I will try to reveal it in, at first glance, a film of a completely different kind - in Kingdom of Heaven

1) The titles of both works are quotations from the Bible: Revelation 8:1 in the "Seventh Seal" and Matt. 3:2 and others in the Kingdom of Heaven.

2) Presence of the wise Knight Hospitaller : in The Seventh Seal - the protagonist himself, in the Kingdom of Heaven - a friend of the protagonist (David Thewlis) .

3) An important role of chess in both films: in The Seventh Seal they serve as the beginning of the plot and are then present in the background, in The Kingdom of Heaven King Baldwin V (Alexander Potts) instructs the main character, Balian (Orlando Bloom) , behind the party.

4) Reflection on "Dance of Death" : in the "Seventh Seal" the squire talks about him with the artist who depicted him on the wall of the church, in the "Kingdom of Heaven" Balian examines the corresponding painting in his new house and reflects on with an inscription next to it: “What we are, so you will be”:

5) The protagonist (in both cases, a knight), associated with the Crusades, doubts the existence of God . In The Seventh Seal, speaking with Death, Antonius says that he would be ready to die if he knew for sure that there is a god: “I want to know, not to believe!” he says.

In the “Kingdom of Heaven” Balian goes to Jerusalem to atone for sins and find comfort in faith, but: “God does not speak to me, even on the hill where Christ was crucified”,

– he begins to doubt and seeks rational explanations for biblical miracles:

In both films, the viewer does not receive a definitive answer to the question of the existence of God: Death evades him, and the Knight Hospitaller remarks to Balian that silence does not mean absence.

To sum up, The Seventh Seal had a huge impact on cinema - we find both direct quotes from Bergman's painting (as in The Last Action Hero or Bill & Ted's Dire Adventure), indirect but unambiguous references (as in x /f "Arn: The Kingdom at the End of the Road") and even entire borrowed details of the narrative (as in "Kingdom of Heaven"). What can be the conclusion? I think everyone will have their own, but mine is this: in the competition of a good story and good visualization, the first will always win. Isn't it?..

Notes.

1 in the Germanic languages, the word "death" is predominantly masculine. I chose to avoid disagreement, so in my text Death is feminine.

2 It is worth noting, however, that Bergman himself was apparently not the author of this idea: in the church of the municipality of Täby (Sweden) there is a famous painting where Death in the form of a skeleton plays chess with a man. It is believed that it was this image that inspired Bergman.
