NASA Wants to Use Moon Rocks as a 3D Printing Material

Most 3D printers use some kind of filament or resin to create small objects used in maker projects, replacement parts, or efforts to learn what a 3,000-year-old mummy sounded like. NASA reportedly wants to ditch those materials in favor of something else: moon rocks.

Universe Today reports(Opens in a new window) that the agency sent a 3D printer to the International Space Station (ISS) as part of the Redwire Regolith Print(Opens in a new window) (RRP) project meant to determine if extraterrestrial materials can enable "the on-demand construction of strong, durable structures," as NASA says.

The space agency said that RRP was designed specifically to enable the use of regolith—dust, broken rocks, and other materials found on the surface of extraterrestrial objects—with the Made In Space Manufacturing Device (ManD) 3D printer that was already onboard the ISS.

"The primary objective of performing the print operations is to successfully demonstrate the manufacturing process capability in microgravity," NASA says. "The secondary objective of the print operations is to produce material samples for scientific analysis."

The viability of regolith-based 3D printing in microgravity could directly affect future missions to the moon and Mars. Even if there are problems with 3D printing in microgravity, however, the agency said that using regolith as a 3D-printing material could have benefits right here on Earth.

"Such technology could eventually be used to construct habitats, landing pads, and other structures for future exploration missions using on-site materials," NASA says, "rather than having to bring along all the raw materials for such construction. "

That covers the space aspect. As for terrestrial life, the agency says being able to use on-site materials could assist the "development of infrastructure to improve quality of life in remote and undeveloped areas and on-site emergency construction during natural disaster response."

Universe Today says NASA will take the RRP project one step at a time. The first step is figuring out if regolith is viable for 3D printing; then the agency would subject the resulting objects to many tests to determine if they meet American Society for Testing and Materials standards.

Rock crawling 3D typewriter - a way to reduce the cost of printing projects

American architect Richard Buckminster Fuller once said: "How many more times do I need to repeat this to you , People? Do more with less!” Maybe the words were a little different, or the tone was different, but he definitely said something along those lines, no matter how it was said. Be that as it may, but there is no other technology in the world that would better meet the requirements of this famous architect than 3D printing. Richard Svolberg, a Shapeways employee and mechanical engineer, elegantly demonstrated this thesis on a 3D printed rock crawler he recently designed.

An example of material reduction using a rock crawler.

Ritchie, as he calls himself, presents the design of his lightweight rock crawler as a method used by Shapeways designers to reduce the cost of their 3D printed projects: Shapeways, has experienced the realization that using more material can significantly increase the cost of printing a product ... Therefore, one way to save money on your project and give products a unique look is by contacting Shapeways or other 3D printing services where the cost calculation products directly depends on the amount of material used, is the use of negative space.

Inspired by the need to cut costs, the Rock Crawler was created using a special frame structure that is becoming increasingly popular on Shapeways and 3D printing in general. Ritchie explains the ground rules for frame structures: “These models must be made from enough material so that the model is easily recognizable, and also strong enough to support its own structure and not fall apart when printed. What I like most about this way of saving on material is that it gives a new style and a new shape to the printed objects.

Close-up of the rock crawler wheel

10 times. As a result, Ritchie created a machine (now sold at Stinger Shapeways) that costs about $40 to print on Shapeways. The final design of this piece is simply stunning. The entire product is printed in one piece, including 3D printed springs that allow the rock crawler to do what it is designed to do - climb difficult obstacles on rough terrain. Check out the video below and you might want to get one from Shapeways too!
