What 3D printing can do: wonders from the

printer

The idea of a 3D printer appeared long before its technical implementation. The concept of a device that creates objects from metals, polymer alloys or any other material can be found in the works of famous science fiction writers as early as the early 1980s. But today we live in the future, where 3D printing technologies have ceased to be a beautiful fairy tale and have firmly occupied a manufacturing niche.

The main advantage of 3D printing is the ability to give an object any, even the most complex shape. Previously, this would have taken an unreasonably long time and resources, and therefore many of the ideas of engineers and designers existed only on paper or as piece laboratory prototypes. But now, with the help of a 3D printer, we can consistently, layer by layer, create any spare parts and parts, building blocks and just sculptures.

By the way, if you think that 3D printing is limited only to small volumes, then we hasten to surprise you. For the film 007: Skyfall, where the charming James Bond is forced to solve problems of national importance, the German company Voxeliet printed three models of the famous Aston Martin car in 1:3 scale. They were intended for filming the accident scene, but as a result, one car survived - it was sold at auction for almost 100,000 pounds!

Speaking of cars, here's another interesting fact: auto parts can also be 3D printed. The iconic Bloodhound, the fastest supersonic car on earth, is capable of speeds in excess of 1,600 km/h, while its insides are 3D printed. Even a special titanium steering wheel was designed for the racer Andy Green - it was cast in the form of a plaster cast from the pilot's hand.

What else can 3D printers do and can they make copies of themselves? The answers are waiting for you in this video:

A craftsman from Chekhov 3D printed a Ferris wheel

Andrey Andreev, 28, is perhaps the only 3D printer in Chekhov. A guy who had been looking for himself for a long time, doing business, realized a couple of years ago that he wanted to model from polymer materials.

Today, a hobby has grown into a profession. Andrey is completely absorbed in what he loves. While we were talking with him, he was modeling the temples for glasses. In his apartment there are a lot of things made with his own hands, more precisely, designed. And they are created by a special apparatus.
    - The principle of 3D printing is the creation of three-dimensional objects from a set of flat layers. The digital model of the product is divided into layers by a special program - a slicer, and the printer prints these layers, one on top of the other, making up a three-dimensional object from them. So, from many layers, a three-dimensional detail is obtained, - Andrey explains.

At the maker’s house, even the ceiling lamps on the chandelier were created using a 3D printer. In April, when the coronavirus pandemic had just begun, Andrey designed and printed custom masks for doctors. It took him about 4 hours to make one piece.
    - Material is extruded from the polymeric rod according to the coordinates according to the shape of the layout. The most difficult thing is to calculate the coordinates. I took ready-made from foreign sites, - says the maker. - I measured the size of the masks on my head, but I think I did not miscalculate. I even left my autograph on each. Wrote: "I swear by Apollo." These are the first words of the Hippocratic Oath.
The hardest part for a 3D printer is creating engineering parts. For example, once, Andreev was ordered special adapters for motor vehicles - parts for lighting equipment. There were no similar models with exact coordinates on the Internet and he had to create from scratch. For almost half a year, the maker scanned, adjusted to the desired size, made mistakes and set to work again.
