University of Toronto researchers have developed a portable 3D skin printer that helps heal deep wounds.
The authors claim that this is the first device that forms tissue at the site of injury and sets it in the wound in two minutes or less, writes TechXplore.
The study was led by Associate Professor Axel Günther of the Department of Applied Science and Engineering and in collaboration with Dr. Mark Jeschke, Director of the Ross Tilly Burn Center at Sunnybrook Hospital and Professor of Immunology at the University of Toronto School of Medicine.
In patients with deep skin wounds, all three layers of the skin - epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous tissue - can be severely damaged. The current preferred treatment is called thick skin grafting, where healthy donor skin is grafted onto the superficial epidermis and part of the underlying dermis.
This type of grafting on large wounds requires sufficient healthy donor skin to pass through all three layers, and sufficient skin for the graft is rarely available. Although a large number of tissue-protected skin substitutes exist, they are not yet widely used in the clinical setting.
"Most current 3D bioprinters are bulky, operate at low speeds, are expensive and are incompatible with clinical applications," explains Axel Günther.
The research team believes their printer is the platform to overcome these barriers, improving the skin's healing process.
Pocket Leather Printer is similar to the white transfer ribbon - except that the ribbon roll is replaced by a micro device that forms fabric sheets. Vertical streaks of bio-ink, composed of protein-based biomaterials, including collagen, the most abundant protein in the dermis, and fibrin, a protein involved in wound healing, run along the inside of each sheet of tissue.
The portable device is the size of a small shoe box and weighs less than a kilogram. It also requires minimal operator training and eliminates the washing and incubation steps required by many traditional bioprinters.

Although a number of 3D printed buildings have been built in the US and Canada in recent years, they have all been one-story. Now, Canadian structural 3D printing company Nidus3D has completed the printing of a two-story building in Ontario - the first multi-story 3D printed building in North America. The company used Cobod's BOD2 3D construction printer, which can print. ..

Additive Manufacturing: Tip of the Iceberg
A growing number of manufacturers are using additive manufacturing to solve costly product performance issues, create stronger components (with fewer parts), and reduce weight. In recent years, additive manufacturing (AM) has skyrocketed in popularity, and it's easy to see why. As this rapidly developing technology allows...

Researchers develop superelastic shape memory alloy for 3D printing
Engineers at Texas A&M University, with support from the US National Science Foundation, have developed a superelastic shape memory alloy (SMA) for 3D printing. The material prevents part defects such as warping and delamination, which usually occur during 3D printing on LPBF (laser powder bed fusion) equipment. On the left is an electron micrograph of a nickel-titanium...

Collaboration of companies led to the development of a multi-axis 3D printing method without support structures
Promation, ModuleWorks and the University of Waterloo's Multi-Scale Additive Manufacturing (MSAM) laboratory have collaborated to develop and successfully test a new method of manufacturing geometric protrusions without the use of support structures. The tests were carried out at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, using the Laser Directional Energy Deposition (LDED) technique....

Breakthrough in additive manufacturing: Color-changing 3D printer ink
Forget about black, white and clear SLA resins. Stop using pink PLA and fluorescent orange ABS filament. Color-changing colloidal nanoinks come to the rescue. Grob launches liquid metal 3D printer
Machine tool and assembly line manufacturer Grob has unveiled the GMP300 liquid metal printing press (LMP). The powder-free technology makes it possible to quickly and safely print close-to-shape aluminum alloy parts, the company claims. LMP technology allows you to create parts from wire, unlike the more common PBF process, which uses...

Explore your 3D printing nozzles
Although the nozzle of a 3D printer may seem small and unassuming, it plays a big role in the success or failure of an FFF print job. FFF 3D printers feed thermoplastic material through a heated nozzle onto a horizontal platform. The printer, loaded with ABS, PLA, or other polymeric material, forms the parts layer by layer from bottom to top. FFF, often called FDM (fused deposition modeling) -...

The disordered atomic structure of amorphous metals allows you to create better parts on a 3D printer
Two heavyweights of the German industry have teamed up to help ensure the success of a new 3D printing material. Heraeus AMLOY Technologies GmbH and the Additive Manufacturing division of the TRUMPF Group are working on optimizing the printing process for Heraeus zirconium-based alloy parts on TRUMPF TruPrint 3D printers.
