What appealed to us about Styku is the accuracy of the measurements and how it has a small (square footage) footprint. The equipment itself does not take up a lot of space, which is important for us in our assessment room. The self-service kiosk mode allows our members to scan themselves privately, which helps our members feel comfortable with the innovative technology. We’ve definitely seen an uptick in our show rate and our close rate as a result, and we have witnessed more people showing up to get training because of GOLD’S 3D™.” Cave said. “GOLD’S 3D ™ is a multi-beneficial tool for the brand not only because is it a sales tool, it’s a retention tool, and more importantly a member engagement tool.

We researched this category extensively and we also executed a side-by-side test against the two best options. Styku was clearly more consistent and accurate. Our test clubs showed a double digit increase in Personal Training revenue during the test period and we also had a nice increase in the average dues per member by bundling a free monthly body scan with our results based membership. That enabled us to see benefits on two revenue fronts during the test period.

Shining 3D EinScan H 3D Scanner Case Studies in Various Applications
Revisiting the Past with Innovative Technology
How to recreate a vintage racing boat quickly and cost effectively? It is necessary to apply advanced technologies for creating three-dimensional digital copies. The master scans the hull of an antique boat using a Shining 3D EinScan H 3D scanner.
Using a light and handy device, you can get a digital copy of such a large object even in confined spaces. The 3D image is created in EXScan and exported to create a boat model in the Fusion 360 reengineering application.
In the program, the master receives all the necessary data for the manufacture of molds and, based on them, makes an approximate calculation of financial investments in the purchase of materials and work with them. Advanced technologies and modern materials will be used to make an exact copy of an old racing boat.
In Fusion 360, a sketch of the watercraft with all elements and accessories is completely prepared.
Instead of mahogany veneer, which was used to make an old boat, the craftsman takes inexpensive MDF and cuts the necessary parts on a CNC machine. The assembled frame is sheathed with slats.
This is a preliminary recreation of a racing boat. The master spent about two hours collecting and processing data. Now that the approximate cost of materials and work for the construction of a new boat is already known and they suit the customer, the master can begin to create a detailed project.
To learn more about this unique 3D scanner experience, see "Middle of Craftsmanship and Technology: EinScan H and Fusion 360 in Traditional Boat Building. "
3D body scan: where a digital 3D copy of a person is required
When might a digital copy of a human body be required? Why do manufacturers of any product need a copy of the hand or foot? It turns out that a three-dimensional scan copy is necessary, for example, in the manufacture of athletes' equipment - after all, the perfect fit of clothes and shoes determines the achievement of the best results.
The second option is orthopedics. Based on a digital image of a human foot, you can make an ideal device for the treatment of joint diseases, flat feet and other ailments. If earlier you had to do numerous fittings, spend time creating intermediate products, now, by scanning a limb with the Shining 3D EinScan H 3D scanner, you can create the perfect insoles, shoes and other corrective products, as well as bandages and orthoses in the program.
It should be noted the possibility of obtaining a copy of the face and hair, which until recently was not available for devices in the budget segment. Get your own digital copy and place yourself as a playable character in an online battle. Finally, with the help of additive technologies, by exporting the prepared scan to a slicer program, you can get a file for reproducing a three-dimensional copy of a person on a 3D printer.
It is possible to enumerate endlessly, for which digital copies of parts of the human body will be needed. Medicine, light industry, sports industry and many other industries - 3D human scanning technology can be used everywhere.
In the article "3D body scan for mass customization with EinScan H" you will find short videos demonstrating the ability to scan the human body using the Shining 3D EinScan H handheld hybrid 3D scanner.
Ideal orthosis: fast and convenient
Gypsum splints are being replaced by an advanced design - a 3D printed orthosis. Plaster of paris is heavy, it cannot be wetted, with prolonged wearing of gypsum, irritation occurs on the skin - these negative properties are familiar to both doctors and patients. But now additive technologies have made it possible to obtain an alternative - orthoses printed on a 3D printer and perfectly fitted to the anatomical features of the patient's limb.
Biying Biotech engineers developed a unique composite printing system to minimize the time needed to create the fixation structure. And for customizing orthoses, a method is used to obtain a 3D copy of an injured limb using a portable 3D scanner Shining 3D EinScan H. The device provides a sufficient degree of detail at a high digitization speed.
Acquiring a 3D image and generating a 3D model takes no more than 20 seconds. Then the picture is processed in the editor and exported to the slicer application to prepare the print file. The 3D printer reproduces the required fixative within 10 minutes.
Advantages of the technology:
- The speed of obtaining a finished orthosis is 20 minutes.
- Increased patient comfort - Lightweight and comfortable yet strong and durable.
- Precise fixation leads to accelerated healing of injuries.
- The product is ecological and aesthetically pleasing.
For more information on the technology of creating medical fixation structures in traumatology, please see the article "EinScan 3D scanners improve the production of orthopedic fixators".

Skolkovo start-up undertook to solve the problem of online retail using 3D scanning
The Tardis company, founded by graduates Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech), offered the market the possibility of fast and high-quality 3D scanning of the human body. The technology has many applications, from souvenirs to game development and fitness. But at present, developers have concentrated on the online retail market: one of the most burning problems of clothing sellers is proposed to be solved by scanning buyers.
Tardis co-founder Vahe Taamazyan at Startup Village 2016 in Skolkovo. Photo: Sk.ru
At the end of July, the Tardis team took part in a major international SIGGRAPH conference in the USA, where they presented their 3D human body scanner. The company returned from the show with the decision to start moving to the US market in the coming months.
“SIGGRAPH is perhaps one of the most unusual and cool conferences in the world, as it combines a section with the best scientific publications in the field of computer graphics, computer vision from top scientists from around the world, a section with a demonstration of some of these scientific projects, courses , an art section, as well as a full-fledged exhibition of companies. That is, the conference is located at the intersection of science, art and business - as, indeed, the entire field of computer graphics and computer vision. During the exhibition, we were able to communicate with a large number of people from completely different areas. I was pleasantly surprised by the sharp increase in interest in virtual reality, which is very consistent with what we are doing,” Vahe Taamazyan, co-founder of the Tardis company, told Sk. ru.
The Tardis team began developing their solution about 1.5 years ago. Two of the three founders of the company, Vahe Taamazyan and Mikhail Matrosov, are Skoltech graduates, the third member of the team, Stanislav Podshivalov, is a MIPT graduate. “The topic of computer vision in general and 3D scanning in particular got me very interested in the middle of my master’s studies,” said Vahe Taamazyan. — I worked on scientific projects in this area, wrote a diploma and decided to try to apply the acquired knowledge and skills to create a real product in the field of 3D scanning of the human body. My colleagues were also very interested in the project, at first we focused on a product for the 3D printing market. Now we are studying the possibilities of using our product in the online clothing retail market.”
At the SIGGRAPH exhibition, other solutions for scanning the human body were also presented, but the Russian development turned out to be one of the most affordable, while not yielding to more expensive analogues in quality of reconstruction. The advantages are also a short scanning time - about a second, and object reconstruction - 5-10 minutes. For comparison, existing scanners on the market have either a significantly longer capture time - tens of seconds, or an order of magnitude longer processing time - 2-3 hours.
Tardis display at SIGGRAPH.
The low price compared to competitive solutions is explained by the team simply: “Firstly, we learned how to assemble scanners based on widely available hardware, and secondly, the scanner itself is extremely easy to assemble, any enthusiast can we only need good software. Thus, our development is actually software for synchronous control of a set of depth sensors, as well as algorithms for reconstructing a 3D model based on captured data. Each of the products on display in the US has its own niche, and we are not trying to compete with expensive medical solutions from companies like 3DMD. We give access to fast and high-quality scanning technology to small VR and 3D printing studios, as well as online clothing retailers. ”
Based on the feedback collected at the show, the team plans to refine their software to meet the existing needs of potential customers. “We are working on the possibility of starting sales in the United States. This may require appropriate adaptation of the product, so we will judge the results over the next 4-6 months, ”said a Tardis representative. The feedback received at the exhibition helped the team to focus on the implementation of the product for online stores.
“The problem that the Tardis is now trying to solve is really significant. On average, in the international market, about 30% of online clothing buyers return or exchange their purchases due to the wrong size. Online stores lose more than $8 billion a year due to clothing returns due to bad fit,” Grigory Leshchenko, head of multimedia technologies at the IT cluster of the Skolkovo Foundation, told Sk.ru.
According to a Skolkovo representative, body scanning and the integration of the resulting scans into clothing sales systems will allow retailers to significantly reduce costs.
