Slickwraps, a smartphone case company based in Andover, Kansas, claims to have developed a product called “Contour,” a $300 3D printer that can create customized 3D printed “skins” for smartphones, tablets, and other electronic devices. Unfortunately, there’s a caveat.

There are many reasons why you might want to protect your smartphone from physical damage. For starters, these things are expensive: even though relatively basic mobile phones cost hundreds of dollars a decade ago, these newer, fancier models are almost like computers—and their price tag reflects that.

Moreover, smartphones these days are all about their giant screens. This is great for watching Snapchat videos on the go, but for durability? One little accident and your phone (and dreams) could be shattered.

The increasing fragility of expensive smartphones therefore remains a constant worry for the consumer, but it has at least ensured that smartphone cases and skins continue to be a popular product.  Cases are, after all, a lot cheaper than insurance.

But more importantly, having a protective case on your smartphone is no longer the nerdy taboo it once was. With so much at stake when you carry an iPhone around in your pocket, it’s simply common sense to have the thing wrapped up in cotton wool—or silicone, I suppose.

Kansas company Slickwraps has been capitalizing on the interest in protective consumer electronics cases for several years, producing a multitude of designs to suit individual products as well as individual tastes.

Its latest product, however, takes customization to a whole new level…or at least it would, if it were real. The company recently unveiled Contour, a 3D printer whose sole purpose is to 3D print customized, durable vinyl skins directly onto "iPhones, Androids and other mobile electronic devices."

It sounds cool, but there's a pretty big caveat here: the product was "launched" on March 31, right on the brink of… yep.

Here's the thing: for an April Fool's joke, it hasn't exactly panned out in the usual way. For one, Slickwraps is yet to own up that the 3D printer is indeed fake—they even created a whole website and marketing campaign for it, which hasn't been taken down or modified at all in the weeks since April 1. It's also not the most outrageous idea for a product, either: sure, calibrating a printer to hit the exact edge of a smartphone would be difficult, but surely someone could do it…

"Through the meticulous sourcing and re-use of existing technologies, we have worked with Mongolian engineer Edward Nara to create a product which can spray a durable yet safely removable skin made from 3M materials," Slickwraps says. "Proudly, we are able to recreate our entire catalog of textures and appearances such as wood, glow, carbon fiber, and more."

Unfortunately, there are a couple of good reasons to think that the actually very useful-sounding Contour 3D printer is in fact a hoax. Firstly, Slickwraps has previous: last year, the company claimed it was branching out into customized condoms, apparently fooling many customers. And second, the $299.99 "product" on the company web store has been "out of stock" since its launch—this despite no customers claiming to have bought the thing. Thirdly, as has been kindly pointed out by readers, the "Contour" is just a Robox 3D printer with stickers on it.

Overall, we're a little disappointed that the Slickwraps Contour won't be printing vinyl skins onto our smartphones anytime soon. But hey, it's a pretty cool idea.

PACKAGE WAS MARKED "DELIVERED", BUT HAVEN'T RECEIVED IT!

My package was marked "delivered", but I haven't received it!

If your tracking was marked as "delivered", but the package wasn't received?

When the tracking for your package is updated as "delivered" by the postal carrier, it triggers an automatic email from us to let you know about this new status.  

Sometimes, a package will be marked as delivered by the shipping carrier prematurely. If you receive the delivery email but have not received your package, here is what we suggest 

  • USPS delivery vehicles use GPS that can automatically update a package as "delivered" prematurely. Please wait another business day, as the package could have been marked as delivered by mistake, and will arrive the following day or so.
  • Contact your local USPS post office. Make sure you contact your LOCAL post office, and not the USPS hotline. Your local post office will be able to provide quicker, and better service. Ask who delivered the package, and ask for the details of that day's delivery. USPS is used to these questions, and will generally provide helpful information.
  • If the package still does not show up please call USPS to file a claim. We cannot reimburse OR re-ship orders that were mis-delivered by the post office or stolen from a property. Thank you for understanding!

3D printing requires preliminary preparation of STL files for future models. The developer of this program is the Hungarian startup CraftUnique, which created a soft slicer to support its own CraftBot device, providing for its compatibility with other printers.

This software is designed to prepare STL-files for printing with the possibility of their analysis, editing, "repair", up to switching to cutting. The ability to correct ready-made STL files at the stage of their preparation for 3D printing is its strength. This computer program is used even by advanced users in the field of three-dimensional modeling. It fundamentally differs from software-slicers in its advanced functionality. Netfabb Basic is a truly powerful tool used by amateurs and professionals alike. It belongs to the category of basic programs only because of the low cost.

No. 4: Repetier

This computer program is intended for advanced users. It stands a level above the standard beginner-friendly slicer software that prepares STL files for printing, but it is open source, allowing you to add functionality by installing additional plugins.

As of today, Repetier supports almost all desktop 3D printers working in the layer-by-layer model growth format, 16 extruders and multi-slicing via plugins. This program can be controlled through an Internet browser not only from a PC, but also from a mobile gadget that has access to the World Wide Web.

Simplify3D is intended for professional use. It is distinguished by advanced functionality and a large selection of filling patterns. This software has a flexible algorithm that not only checks STL files prepared for printing for errors, but also quickly eliminates them, creates the necessary structures and provides the user with control over their placement. Also, Simplify3D is used for slicing the model. It is supported by almost all desktop 3D printers. It is called the "Swiss knife" for 3D printing.

Slic3r is a professional computer program designed to prepare STL files for 3D printing. It is open source and has advanced functionality. It provides the user with a huge opportunity to preview the model before sending it to print by showing it from different angles. For novice users, this can cause shock of varying degrees. What about those who just bought a 3D printer, but have no experience in setting up a slicing program? How to immediately get a decent print result?

To make the use of 3D printers as simple as possible for novice users, their manufacturers prepare so-called 'print profiles' with ready-made settings for slicing programs. We, the manufacturers of the Faberant Cube 3D printer, have also prepared print profiles for the popular CURA slicing program.

After installing the profiles, our user with just a few clicks, having no experience in 3D printing, can upload his 3D model in STL format to the CURA slicing program, get the finished code, and send it to print. In this case, the print result will tend to the maximum. How did we achieve this?

We have made settings in the profiles for all our nozzle options that can be installed on the printer - these are diameters from 0.1 mm to 0.6 mm. We have studied the plastics of domestic manufacturers and created separate settings for them for high-quality printing - from soft TiTi FLEX polyurethane to hard polycarbonate. Now more about how to work in the CURA slicing program with installed profiles for the Faberant Cube 3D printer. Several options are available for the printer nozzles - standard and short type E3D.

Standard brass nozzles, available in 0. 3 mm and 0.5 mm diameters. These nozzles are included with the printer. If there is a need for nozzles of a different diameter, the Faberant Cube supports short nozzles of small diameters of 0.1 mm and 0.2 mm type E3D. It is also possible to install steel nozzles with a diameter of 0.4 mm and 0.6 mm for printing plastics with fillers such as glass fiber and carbon fiber.

Each nozzle type has its own preset settings. The user only needs to select from the drop-down menu which nozzle will be installed on the Faberant Cube 3D printer. Next, in the print settings section, select the print layer height, which determines the print quality. The print layer height for the Faberant Cube 3D printer with different nozzles is from 0.04 mm to 0.4 mm. By default, the printer has a nozzle with a diameter of 0.3 mm (D0.3 standard).

For this nozzle, the optimal layer height for printing any 3D models is automatically selected - this is a layer with a height of 0. 2 mm. If necessary, the user can reduce the layer height down to 0.04 mm using the switch in the menu. For nozzles of other diameters, the optimal layer height is also selected, it can be viewed and selected by opening the advanced settings in the 'Custom' mode, section 'Print Settings' -> ' Profile'.

The Faberant Cube 3D printer can print on a wide range of materials. For those that came to us for testing, we made print profiles with the optimal print temperature, and other important parameters.
