Quality Assurance 3D Printing And Additive Manufacturing

“I applaud Sigma for its transformation from Sigma Labs to Sigma Additive Solutions. While the
company spent years improving upon its roots as a significant player, it has been obvious
to our team that Sigma is poised to become a leading provider of quality solutions and data
pedigree that that solves key challenges to enable adoption of additive manufacturing at scale
across the value chain. We look forward to developing our strategic partnership with Sigma
Additive Solutions through a joint value proposition, to improve the economics and efficiency of
individual customers while seeking to accelerate the growth of the AM industry.”

Sven Ahluwalia-Hinrichs

Head of Technology Consulting - AMFG

“We are pleased to have Sigma Additive Solutions as a founding member of our AM CoE
Industry Consortium on Materials and Standardization (CMDS) and look forward to
collaborating on standardizing the best practices for materials data generation and creating,
curating, and managing the data needed to accelerate the industrialization and full adoption of
AM technologies. Sigma's focus on solutions could not come at a better time for the industry.”

Moshen Seifi, Ph.D., Vice President

Global Advanced Manufacturing Programs, ASTM

“Perhaps the biggest obstacle to widespread AM adoption is quality control…Meanwhile, firms
like Sigma Labs…have created hardware to monitor the build chambers of metal 3D printers to
detect errors. Increasingly, these tools will enable active feedback so that the machines can
quickly correct issues during the print process. When connected with MES software and 3D
printing simulation, the equipment can learn from past errors and address them before they
even happen in the future.”

Three Areas Holding Back the 3D Printing Industry

Forbes, April 25, 2022

“Five months ago, we jointly announced that with Sigma technology integrated on our Control
Platform one of the most common roadblocks for manufacturers, interested in using metal
additive manufacturing for serial production, can be eliminated through a closed loop control.
This makes it possible for customers to leverage their expertise and take advantage of the
customization and localization benefits that AM provides.”

SIGMA LABS TO PROVIDE PROCESS MONITORING SYSTEM FOR LASERTEC 3D PRINTERS FROM DMG MORI

You are here

Home

DMG MORI, a manufacturer of industrial production systems, has selected 3D printing software developer Sigma Labs as the supplier of the melt bath monitoring system for its SLM LASERTEC line of machines.

Sigma PrintRite3D's proprietary in-process quality control software has already been tested by both companies and proven to meet the needs of DMG's industrial customers. The next step in the partnership is to provide DMG MORI with an interface for their 3D printers to be fully “PrintRite ready”. Further terms of the contract remain confidential for the time being.

Onsite process monitoring is an important aspect of industrial additive manufacturing, especially for critical applications in industries such as aerospace and medical. The high energy density applied to such thin layers of powdered raw materials can lead to spatter, porosity, and other defects that adversely affect the properties of printed components.

PrintRite3D is designed to detect and classify defects that occur during laser welding of the powder layer. It analyzes the melt pool and laser thermal parameters in real time using sensor modules developed by Sigma Labs. This gives users the opportunity to save both material costs and time by reducing print failures, as they can stop production as soon as a serious defect is discovered.

By collecting and analyzing build data, users can also gain insight into processes, making any corrective changes that may be required. Because the software is brand independent, it is compatible and upgradable with most industrial metal 3D printing systems on the market, including single, dual and quad laser machines.

As a result of the transaction, the partners have already received their first joint customer - the manufacturing company IN4.OS. “PrintRite3D from Sigma Labs is an essential component in making additive manufacturing a mainstay for mission-critical manufacturing and delivering quality products,” said IN4.OS CEO RJ Singh. “We look forward to starting a new era of American manufacturing with our strategic partners, Sigma Labs and DMG MORI.”

Smart approach

AI-based quality control systems have also made their debut in the additive manufacturing industry in recent years. For example, researchers at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory have recently developed machine learning-based software that can track 3D printed metals in real time. The algorithm, called Peregrine, is intended as a cost-effective alternative to traditional defect characterization methods such as Sigma's PrintRite3D.

Elsewhere Purdue University recently received an $800,000 grant from the US Department of Energy to accelerate development of the world's first 3D printed nuclear reactor core. The funding will be used by the university's engineers to create a new artificial intelligence model to ensure the nuclear quality of the microreactor's critical components.
