There are literally dozens of new 3D printing-related patent applications filed every week. The surprise was the participation in the race of the company Gillette, which, it would seem, has nothing to do with 3D printing. Yes, the same Gillette that makes all kinds of razors.
According to a recently filed patent (US20140033538 A1), Gillette intends to use 3D printing to produce replacement disposable cartridges for branded razors.
As it turns out, several companies are currently rapidly prototyping various parts of razors, including handles and replacement cartridges. However, until now, all attempts to 3D print razors have been limited to experiments and testing marketing ideas. Such developments did not receive functional application due to non-compliance with technical standards, whether it be workmanship or inappropriate product architecture.
The patent application explains that:
“The materials previously used in the manufacture of cartridges did not withstand hot water properly, changing their characteristics. As a result, previous attempts to create razor cartridges using 3D printing have been useful for improving the external design, developing dimensions and shapes, evaluating the interaction of various components, but have not had practical functionality.
So far, new razor designs have been tested using traditional castings. This allowed development companies to create fully functional prototypes from the same materials as mass-produced products.
On the other hand, the production cycle for creating molds takes weeks or even months, and at the same time costs a lot of money. The discovery of design defects during testing means a return to the initial stage, which makes the improvement of designs a time-consuming and costly process.
This is where 3D printing comes in. The patent describes a process for the additive manufacturing of fully functional razor cartridges from photopolymer materials that can withstand the required operating loads:
“To form sufficiently strong razor cartridge bodies, photopolymer resins are used in combination with a filler. As a filler, the use of aluminum oxide nanoparticles is currently contemplated, although silica or a ceramic filler may be used. The alumina-filled photopolymer resin has strength characteristics high enough to withstand the mechanical stress experienced by the cartridge body during shaving, as well as the temperature fluctuations caused by repeated hot water rinsing.”
The company believes that the use of 3D printing will improve production efficiency and reduce costs. The technology should allow on-the-fly design changes to improve the quality of the product without requiring significant costs. Although this patent only describes the construction of cartridge bodies, it is possible to manufacture other parts of razors.
For now, it looks like Gillette is aiming to use 3D printing to increase the efficiency of prototyping and manufacturing razors. However, there is a possibility that in the future such technologies will be used to create custom-made razors that fit perfectly in size and shape.
