18 Cool DIY Ideas Raspberry Pi Case
The Raspberry Pi has been around for a few years now. This credit card-sized computer changed the world with its small size and equally small price tag. With countless possible uses for it, it's always a good idea to protect your Pi with a case. You may be dealing with your starter kit. If not, you can easily make your own for almost no cost.
Today I'm going to show you different DIY cases you can make for Pi and Pi Zero. You will find that many of these designs can be easily modified to fit almost any small development board. Before you start, it's worth considering what type of case would be best for you. case as this may vary depending on your usage.
Useful Tools
First, let's take a look at some handy tools to help you develop your case. Every version of the Raspberry Pi since the original Model B v1 has mounting holes that allow you to mount the board on a surface. These vary depending on which board you own, although this handy cheat sheet from Raspberry Pi Spy covers mounting hole locations for all of them, as well as dimensions for the official Raspberry Pi camera module.
For detailed sizing, see detailed mechanical drawings for each board on the Raspberry Pi official website. These figures show the size and position of each major component and port on the board.
Alternatively, if you'd rather not worry about distance, you can buy a "bare bones" kit that fits all ports and add your own design to the rest of the case.
Once you've determined the correct spacing for your board, it's time to start creating!
Cardboard boxes
For a simple yet effective way to protect your Pi from life's many hazards, a cardboard case might be the way to go. The designs in this section make sense even if you decide to do something a little more substantial, as each design can be printed and used as a template to ensure proper spacing between ports and GPIO pins.
Shortly after the release of the original Pi, an official forum member named "E" released a design for a paper case called "The Punnet".
This design has been updated by Jerry McManus of the Rural Design Collective to fit modern versions of the Pi. The pdf instructions let you make a simple attachment for your Pi for free!
The Pi Zero doesn't have an easy design to print and run, although using the board dimensions along with an online template creation service will let you create something perfect for your project.
Recycled cases
One way to build your business is to recycle other old equipment. Almost all of us have old kit pieces that are defective or simply too outdated to be useful now. Why not create the perfect retro case?
This NES case has quickly become a classic in the Maker community and many people prefer to place boards designed to mimic retro gaming in the perfect case. This video from John Riggs of RIGG'd Games takes a look at how he placed his Pi3 B+ model before showing off his retro gaming setup.
This approach works well for the Pi Zero as well, and because it's much smaller, it leaves a lot more room inside if you need to add any other modules to your setup. In this video by Trevor Saul, a USB hub is included in an old Duck Hunt cartridge next to a Pi Zero.
Continuing the idea of reusing old technology, this case from Instructables user nunopcardoso uses an old CD drive to house a Raspberry Pi along with a power supply and hard drive. The case also has room for a fan controlled by PWM, for cooling the whole set.
Image credit: nunopcardoso via Instructables.comWhile this design is meant to run the Pi without a head, adding an extra HDMI port hole will allow you to attach a screen. Extra points if you use a monitor from the same period as your CD drive!
Instructables user gardines used an old rotary phone as a case for his daughter's Raspberry Pi MP3 player.
Image Credit: Curtains via Instructables.comWhat if you don't have an old phone or CD slot? Well, it turns out that you can make a case out of anything. Mingyu Zheng looked to the kitchen for inspiration and created an amazingly professional looking Pi Tin Sardine!
Image courtesy of Mingyu Zheng via mingyu.co.ukThese builds are ideal as they fully embrace the concept of reusing things where possible and don't require many tools to build them.
With the Pi Zero, your options for on-the-fly usage become even wider, as Instructables user Crysknife007 shows us. It turns out that the Tic-Tac box is perfect for placing the board. This has to be one of the easiest and cheapest ways to make a protective case.
Image Credit: Crysknife007 via Instructables.comThere are endless possibilities for these types of cases, and depending on how you plan to use the Pi, you can cut additional holes in your chosen case to allow access to GPIO pins, install a heatsink, or any other accessories you use. in your project.
Built by you
We can't write an article about DIY cases without covering the classics. Lego Pi case. Building your case brick-by-brick allows for a huge amount of customization, and with Lego Digital Designer you can preview your case before building it. This means that you can make the most practical case for your own needs. Or you could of course create a 'Pi Fighter' instead.
To get the most out of Lego, you can use Bricklink to order the exact bricks you need for your build. Instructables user Darrennie used this approach when designing and building a case for the Raspberry Pi 2 Model B.
Image credit: darrenny via Instructables.comMany older computer keyboards have enough room in their cases to fit a Pi. Ben Heck has gone one step further and created a retro keyboard for his Pi. The assembly is reminiscent of the old BBC Micro computers that are fondly remembered. Not only is this build pretty solid and functional, but it also looks nice and nostalgic.
Wood is another great environment to work in. Reddit user Rbotguy has created a large case with a handle to house his Pi. The case is equipped with a cooling fan and a large battery and is used to simulate artificial life. Not only does it look great, but it includes circuit charging, which means it can always work whether it's mains or battery powered.
Image credit: Rbotguy via Imgur.comThis design leaves plenty of room for adding components later, or can easily be scaled down to accommodate a smaller project.
For something simpler, a top and bottom cover will do for many people. User sandshock from Instructables created a stylish oak cover for his Pi for just $10 .
Image Credit: Sandshock via Instructables.comThis design also works well for metal. Instructables user natetetete used copper to create a fantastic looking top and bottom cover for his Raspberry Pi 3 Model B.0003 Image courtesy of natetetete via Instructables.com
The benefit of using copper like this is a slight design improvement to allow the case itself to be used as a heatsink, not only protecting the pi from harm, but also overheating!
3d Print Your Own
With the advent of 3D printing, more and more people are creating their own projects at home. If you're curious about 3D printing or you're a beginner and want to learn more, check out our guide to !
There are many ways a 3D printer can enhance your experience. as a Raspberry Pi user. One of the benefits of having access to a printer is that there are many pre-existing designs to choose from. Sites like Thingiverse have large communities of craftsmen who make just about anything you can imagine.
For a non-nonsense case that fits snugly and allows access to all ports, look no further than thedude333 design.
Image Credit: thatdude333 via Thingiverse.comSomething that covers a little more of the board and looks fantastic to boot, check out this Walter case design, also on Thingiverse.
Image credit: Walter via thingiverse.comIf you're looking for something a little more ambitious, daftmike has a series of YouTube videos showing how he constructed and 3d printed a NES clone case along with cartridges to mount retro Raspberry Pi gaming machine.
Along with detailed videos of the hardware and software development process, all projects are available on his Thingiverse profile.
If you're still using an older Pi, you'll also find plenty of options. This beautiful mechadrafter design is for use with a Raspberry Pi 2 Model B.
Image credit: mechadrafter via thingiverse.comThere are also designs dedicated to the Pi Zero, such as a minimalistic design that includes a USB power regulator from user Marks.
Image courtesy of Marksz via thingiverse.comIf you're looking for something a little more stylistic, Unic8 has designed a case that provides full access to all of the board's pins and features a futuristic diamond design.
Image credit: unic8 via thingiverse.comThere are countless ways to make your own case for your Pi, from very practical and stylish to incredibly budget-friendly and functional. 3D printing has certainly changed the game in recent years, although whatever tools you use, you can create something unique to keep your little Raspberry friends safe.
Have you designed or built your own case for your Pi? Is there another approach to this that we just haven't thought of? Show us your ideas in the comments section below!
Penkesu - a portable retro computer with a mechanical keyboard - Technique on vc.ru
275 views
There are a lot of developers in M.Video-Eldorado who started programming in BASIC for the ZX Spectrum. The more interesting it is to dive into the retro world of iron. There aren't many ultraportable laptops out there these days, with the exception of pocket PCs (like the Steam Deck) that are focused on gaming.
Tablets and smartphones often replace laptops, so there is not much room for mini devices. That didn't stop Penk Chen, a tech enthusiast from Tokyo, from creating his own portable PC called the Penkesu, a retro-futuristic portable laptop with a low-profile mechanical keyboard. Penk Chen calls himself a "digital nomad". And like a real nomad, he loves light portable things. For example, the smallest laptops.
Penkesu might well exist as a work prop for sci-fi films in 90's or R&B story unit for clips in the 2000s. Penk Chen stated on the Penkesu website that he was looking for a new project after the success of the CutiePi, a 12mm Raspberry Pi-based tablet with a pen that doubles as a stand.
Penkēsu ( ペ ン ケ ー ス ) is an appropriate name for a device designed by someone named Penk, but it's actually the Japanese word for "pencil case".
Keyboard PCB is Koda from Odd Rocket Keyboards. And the caps are ordinary white MBK Choc, on top of which the pigment is “fused” by a laser engraver (if anything, the font “Trade Gothic Bold Condensed No. 20” was used). The NEJE dk-8-kz laser engraver has a power of 3000 mW, but even 1000 mW would be enough to get a good print.
The pigment was a random nail polish purchased from Amazon. Penk mixed the varnish and a few drops of water, then applied the solution to the keycaps with a small brush.
The Penkesu case is a simple design made using eclectic 3D printed parts and hinges designed for the Game Boy Advance SP.
Clamshell lid features a wide 7.9-inch 400x1280 screen with capacitive touch support, connected via an HDMI ribbon cable that sends a 2W signal to a Raspberry Pi Zero.
The internal components of the "pencil case" are made from OEM components and are reduced to a minimum, which can be purchased separately on the Internet. Rechargeable USB interface and 48-key (12x4) ortholinear mechanical keyboard, consisting of an Arduino controller with low-profile Kailh Choc V1 switches, an Adafruit PowerBoost 1000C power supply, and a 3. 7V Li-Po (lithium polymer, 606090) battery with a capacity of 5000 mAh round out the main components of the computer, following Chen's goal of using a minimum amount of electronics. The battery provides approximately five hours of standby time at 50% screen brightness.
Keyboard includes:
- 48 Kailh Choc V1 Low Profile Switches
- 48 low profile MBK Chocs
- 48 diodes 1N4148
- 1 x Arduino Pro Micro
- 1 x custom PCB
All of this runs on a $15 Raspberry Pi computer with a 1GHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 processor, 512MB of RAM, Bluetooth 4.2, and WiFi connectivity. This means that a small computer should support most operating systems and software compatible with Raspberry Pi devices that meet these specifications.
Although these characteristics may seem disappointing, you can do a surprising amount of things with such a computer. This includes programming, browsing the web, networking between other IoT devices, and even playing thousands of retro games, just to name a few.
In addition, the Pocket PC's built-in touch screen and keyboard gives users immediate access to the Raspberry Pi's vast application library without the need to connect any external peripherals such as mice or monitors.
The result is a snazzy laptop with clicky keys that resembles a compact Raspberry Pi 400 keyboard that houses an ARM-based computer, but with a screen.
When it comes to DIY computer building, the Raspberry Pi is one of the most famous pieces of hardware, serving as the basis for many inexpensive projects. These highly programmable feature-packed PCs come in an incredibly small form factor and range in price from $4 to $70. Their portability and affordability allow for numerous build options, allowing users to design custom PCs.
Modern versions of the Raspberry Pi can fit an entire computer in a keyboard, but some builds are focused on literally putting a PC from a bygone era in the palm of your hand.
ThePenkesu wasn't the first retro Raspberry Pi laptop, there was also a CyberDeck. Like the Penkesu, it also has a mechanical keyboard. But instead of a compact design, the CyberDeck components are housed in a rugged, waterproof camera case.
At various times, computer manufacturers have tried to create compact and affordable netbooks focused on Internet access. But pocket computers like the Sony VAIO P in clutch form never caught on.
In the case of the VAIO P, this was due to the fact that it was not very user-friendly due to the slow Intel Atom processor, 8-inch 1600x786 screen and, most importantly, the almost $900 price tag.
ThePenk says "it doesn't have plans to sell kits or mass-produce the Penkesu yet", but that doesn't rule out the possibility that anyone could buy it at some point in the future. Its individual parts cost less than $200, and those who are interested can find detailed assembly process instructions and drawings on the Penkesu website.
