General Information About Rainbow Filament
Rainbow-Filament* has several colors, which cover the whole color spectrum of the rainbow according to its name. The transition of each color to the next depends on the respective mark of the filament and takes place at a distance of three to five meters. This transition also affects how thick each color section is in the final 3D printed model.
Virtually all rainbow filaments use PLA* as their basic plastic matrix. This makes them as easy to use as possible, making them suitable for beginners in 3D printing or even for kids who want to create their own projects.
However, the PLA basis of the rainbow filament also means that the finished print models have little functional value. They are normally not suitable for professional work, but are usually intended as eye-catching exhibits.
Properties of the Rainbow Filament
Rainbow filament, like all other filaments in 3D printing, has many advantages, but there are also drawbacks to be considered:
Probably the biggest advantage of rainbow filament is its beautiful color spectrum and the effect that each color merges smoothly into the next. So if you want to realize an eye-catching and visually appealing print project, the rainbow filament is a perfect choice.
In addition, every 3D printed object made with rainbow filament is absolutely unique. Although it is possible to adjust the layer thickness as well as the filling settings individually, you can never predict exactly how the finished model will look like.
Even the choice of the starting color is left to chance. But this unpredictability can become a problem if you’re a 3D printing service provider. A 3D printed model made with rainbow filament cannot be made to exact specifications. That’s true even if you use the same basic printer settings.
Rainbow filament consists in principle of colored PLA. Therefore it offers both its user-friendliness and the low price of standard PLA. In contrast, composite filaments using PLA as a plastic matrix are four to five times more expensive. This ease of use of rainbow filament, along with its interesting appearance and versatility, also makes it popular with the 3D printing community.
Typically, once 3D printing is complete, each filament requires some post-processing to make it look right. This is especially true for the rainbow filament. To make the transition between color sections nearly invisible, you need to remove the layer lines and give the whole object a smooth exterior finish. If you would like to create a print project with a metal-like gloss, but do not want to use metal composite filament, silk filament is a suitable alternative. However, you should always take into account that silk filament can clog the extruder, so the nozzle should have a wide opening.
Since silk filament is not abrasive, an all-metal nozzle is not absolutely necessary. Experience shows that the individual color sections have a width of five to eight meters, which makes it very difficult to predict the appearance of the finished model.

The tolerance is around 0.03 millimeters and the finished print object has a very good surface structure. It is important that the rainbow filament of Zi-Ruhi is not exposed to direct sunlight for a long period of time, as this causes the material to fade after a short time.
UniCoFil
UniCoFil is a German company that exclusively sells filaments for 3D printing. The product range includes four rainbow filaments*.
Each spool runs through the entire color spectrum of the rainbow 16 times, the individual color sections form a transition to the next color after three meters. Like the other filaments of UniCoFil, the rainbow filaments have a diameter of 1.75 millimeters and 2.85 millimeters and a tolerance of approximately 0.05 millimeters. The spools are only available in a quantity of 750 grams.
Models printed with UniCoFil 3D filament retain their shape at temperatures up to 60 degrees Celsius.

FDM printing offers you as a user a wide variety of possible filament types, ranging from standard plastic to composite filaments. The rainbow filament is a relatively simple material and not as complex as metallic or high-temperature filaments.
However, both its appearance and its relatively low price are convincing arguments. But the biggest drawback of rainbow-filament 3D printing is that the appearance of the final 3D printed model is unpredictable. Making Rainbow Filament at Home
Instead of buying rainbow filament from one of the recommended manufacturers, you also have the option of making your very own filament in rainbow colors.
All you need is a 3D printer with a minimum print bed size of 205 x 205 millimeters, a clear PLA filament, a filament in any color (for example, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, or purple, which is the rainbow color), slicer software, and the STL files for the filament (depending on whether your printer is a single or multi-material extruder).
The resulting filament is hexagonally shaped and compatible with any 3D printer. In addition, the transitions on your homemade rainbow filament are shorter than those on commercially available filaments, allowing you to print even small objects with a rainbow effect.
Method for a Single Extruder
First, you download the necessary 27 files from MyMiniFactory. Load the files one by one into your slicer software and make sure that the positioning rings in the upper left and lower right of each file are aligned.
Then you define a height of 0.2 millimeters for the first layer, the other layers should have a height of 0.12 millimeters. The filling is 100 percent and it is a circular filling pattern. You should not use support structures, brims or rafts when making rainbow filament.
Then you print the 27 files in the order given by MyMiniFactory. The color files are printed in the color specified in the file name and you change the filament depending on the next color.
Make sure that the printing bed remains hot during the entire printing process. Once you have printed all the files, you have created your own multicolor hexagonal filament.
Method for a Multi-Material Extruder
First, you download the necessary 15 files from MyMiniFactory. Now you load the files one by one into your slicer software. Then set a height of 0.2 millimeters for the first layer, the other layers should have a height of 0.12 millimeters.
The filling is 100 percent and it is a circular filling pattern. When making rainbow filament you should not use support structures, brims or rafts.
Now you assign the desired colors to the files, but file 01, as well as file 15, should be printed in clear filament, so that a smooth surface is created both on top and bottom, so that the filament can be extruded after finishing. Finally, you export your G-code and complete the printing. You now have your own hexagonal filament in rainbow look.

Marble PLA has some similarities to wood PLA*, as both filaments are plastic materials that have been modified to give the typical appearance of a natural material. For this reason, marble PLA is also known as composite filament.
Unlike most composite filaments, however, marble PLA is not as abrasive and therefore does not lead to increased nozzle wear. However, in order to completely prevent nozzle degradation, the use of a durable nozzle made of hardened steel, for example, is recommended.
What is PMMA Filament?
Polymethyl methacrylate filament (PMMA*) is a thermoplastic used as the main component in acrylic films. Therefore PMMA filament is also called an acrylic filament.
PMMA filaments are toxic and prone to deformation, making them less popular in 3D printing. However, the advantages of PMMA filament are its strength, durability and impact resistance. PMMA is mostly transparent, making it ideal for printing parts in 3D through which light is supposed to pass.
For this reason, PMMA filament is especially intended for the production of lampshades, window panes or similar objects.
What should be considered when printing with silk filament?
Silk Filament* is particularly useful for 3D printed objects where the surface needs to be glossy and slightly translucent for a silky effect.
Post-processing is usually not necessary with silk filament, as the natural look of the 3D-printed models is already convincing. Silk filaments are normally reinforced PLA filaments, the shiny effect is due to various additives. For this reason, they have the same advantages and disadvantages as conventional PLA filaments. Silk filaments with a different base soft have accordingly the properties of the base material.
There are also a number of distinguishing features with regard to the printing process compared to conventional PLA. Since the silk filament has elastic additives, there may be difficulties with adhesion to the printing bed. In addition, clogging of the nozzle is often reported.
Most manufacturers of silk filament recommend an unheated printing bed, but experience shows that a heated printing plate can make a good contribution to the adhesion of the material. Other problems associated with silk filament include under-extrusion and slight shrinkage of 3D printed objects.

Slightly higher temperatures than normal PLA are advisable when handling silk filament.
This not only makes the finished print model more durable but also less brittle. In addition, increasing the temperature allows the elastomers to melt correctly and give the model its characteristic silky gloss. Warping, on the other hand, is one of the problems that usually does not occur when printing with silk filament.

1.Q:The printed model has a single color, why?
A:The length of the rainbow PLA in each color is constant, and the customer calculates the length or weight of filaments needed to print the model according to how many colors customers want to show when slicing.
2.Q: The color of an actual printed object is different from that of filament itself, why?

3.Q: Why my filament tangles? How can I solve it?

A common cause of tangle is that the filament end is not fixed to the holes of spool. Overline tangle or the changed winding direction make filament tangle. So customers need to fix the filament end to the proper holes of the spool.
4.Q: Can PLA be used to print tableware?
A: Not recommended. Although PLA is degradable, food-grade raw material, the PLA with toner is non-food grade.
5.Q: The nozzle is clogged by PLA, and how can I solve it?
A: Inconstant filament diameter, the lower nozzle temperature and frequent replacement with different kinds of filaments will lead to this problem. So, before you get started, clean the nozzle and turn up the temperature to a proper value.
6.Q: My prints have web-like strings (stringing) issues. How can I troubleshoot it?
A: Too high temperature makes the PLA filament melt and flow so fast. Please turn the temperature down to a proper value.
The retracting parameters are improper, so adjust the retracting length and speed.
7.Q: There are too much melted filament around the nozzle. What should I do?
A: This problem can be attributed to over-high temperature, low printing speed, and in the slice software, the nozzle diameter doesn’t match with the extrusion output.
8.Q: The PLA filament was perfect when I opened the package. After several times of intermittent printing, my PLA filament snaps by accident during printing. Why?
A: Normally, the PLA filament in the printing process will not snap by themselves. However, after being affected by moisture, the degradable material PLA will be more brittle and easier to break, so you should pay attention to dampproof.
9.Q: The surface of my print isn’t very smooth, and the extruded filament has inconstant diameters. Why?
A: The printing temperature is too high or too low. The temperature doesn’t match well with the printing speed. You need to adjust the printing speed or temperature.
10.Q: Why my PLA-printed objects don't stick to the heated bed? How do I solve?
A: The distance between the nozzle and the bed is too far. Make sure your heated bed is leveled and it’s clean. Then judge if the printing temperature and heated bed temperature are too low, and our customers should adjust them to correct ranges.
