Trying to make lithophany with a laser
As long as PETG passes the freeze test, and 3D printers are chewing pound after pound of plastic, you can dedicate yourself to mastering additional specialties. And since the topic of combining 3D printers with laser engravers has come up, then someone probably needs it. And if you need it, why not study it :)

Of course, we will not buy a printer with a laser module. Let's go the old proven way - take an inexpensive good engraver with the possibility of a further upgrade. After all, our hands are not for boredom :)

The choice fell on the AUFERO Laser 1 from Ortur with the LU2-4SF module (optical power 5.5W). Engraving area 180x180mm.

Why exactly him?!

This is Diego (Arkipita) the creator of one of the best free laser cutting software called LaserGRBL. And on his desk... that's right... engravers from the Ortur company :) He definitely understands engravers.

We have a new line of cheap engravers, which were written about on the portal here -> Ortur launched a line of inexpensive laser engravers Aufero. These engravers and modules can also be purchased from the Russian warehouse of the company.

Despite the fact that the model is not expensive, it already has limit switches and this is an indisputable plus. And the rest is a device for the first acquaintance and finishing. The logical question is, why not immediately buy a machine that does not require modifications ?! Firstly, it is initially unclear which of the proposed accessories is needed and what is not. And secondly, most of the accessories can be made independently (and often better, because there are a lot of iron and mechanisms in the workshop). And thirdly ... Well, it's boring to live without adventures.

Let's get started...

The laser arrives in a medium size box. At the same time, the weight is only 3.04 kg.

We open the box and there is traditionally a lot of foamed polystyrene. On the spread there is a description of the equipment and some technical information. Everything is in bourgeois. But it doesn't need translation.

We take everything out of the box.

That's right. Everything has already been collected for us. We just need to screw the head into place and fix it with a screw. In the package: frame assembled with electronics, laser module, power supply for 24V (2A), cable for connecting to a computer, wrench for tightening the roller eccentrics, hexagon, bone for removing ash, module fixing screw, several test boards made of plywood 2.5mm thick, a plate for coarse focus adjustment, a black plate for fine focus adjustment, corners, if you want, tightly screw the machine to the table and ties. There are no bolts for corners. It's up to you to decide how to fix it. But in fact, with a standard head, the laser stands confidently and does not tear it off even if the head is on the edge. Apparently, Ortur suspects that the first upgrade will be a long X-axis as the easiest refinement and then it will need to be screwed.

The machine is cheap, so there is no module for Oofline work. But there is a socket for its connection. In addition to it, on the front panel there are two buttons and sockets for power and connection to a computer:

Assembled. Everything has been assembled in haste, the belts are not stretched and the rollers are not adjusted. All this requires some adjustments. The belts are tightened without problems, and the adjustment of the rollers will not make it difficult for those who have dealt with printers on profiles. For example, such as Longer LK4 Pro.

Rubber feet, factory glued. We haven't farmed anything yet. Improvements are the subject of future reviews.

Laser module LU2-4SF. SF stands for ShortFocus i.e. short focus.

The company also has a modification LF (Long Focus). It is preferable if you plan to cut plywood. Yes, the diode laser can cut plywood. And for cutting, the company already has a factory Air Assistent kit that includes a nozzle, tubes, and a regulator. A diode laser with optical power can cut plywood 4 mm thick in 2 passes! Or it may not be cut if no air is supplied to the cut zone, there is no air gap under the workpiece, or there are knots or an excess of glue in the layers of plywood. There is no power reserve. If you plan to cut, then it is better to immediately take the module for 7.5W of optical power. With it, in two passes, with a certain amount of luck, even 6 mm can be cut. Forget clear acrylic. Do not cut it with a diode. Acrylic dyed in mass can be cut. We haven’t tried it ourselves, but the manufacturer claims that up to 8mm at 5.5W can be cut. But on a long focus!

As can be seen from the diagrams, plus the first in the size of the point itself (Spot diametr), and the advantage of the second in the working distance (DOF), i. e. laser power in height is more uniform. On a telephoto lens, you can make 2-3 passes for burning. On a short throw, get littered sides.

Let's go back to the head.

Those who want to experiment with cutting can unscrew them and fix their air nozzle through the already cut thread. There are a lot of 3D printed samples. But keep in mind that this module already has its own primitive air assistant. The cooling fan, located on the top of the module, blows air down through the channels in the case and is blown out in the cut zone through the cone of the light screen. The air pressure in the lens area must always be! The air protects the lens from the resulting combustion products. If you install an external air pump, it should always work. When cutting to the maximum, when engraving to the minimum, but it should work.

And now the favorite section "EXPERIMENTS"!

After the initial setup and testing, I decided to make an engraving according to the photo on the offered plywood. They are 2.5mm thick and are driven by a screw. I more or less leveled it with my hand and started engraving at 100% power. And of course, nothing happened - the laser burned through the board in places.

The interesting thing is that the laser burned out some height map. And this means you can try to make a lithophany for them. You can print on a printer of course, but a laser can theoretically do better.

We print 2 plates. The first one was made 3 mm and they forgot to put 100% infill. It turned out like this.

PETG plastic from U3Print. They decided not to experiment with white because they were afraid that there would be a lot of glare and that his laser would not take it from the word at all.

And start engraving. First on a test board. And then on plastic. First, as on a board, 40% power on plastic with a solid fill. Then the power was increased to 80%. Then 100% in two passes. And the result was "inconclusive".

What conclusion can we draw?! AUFERO Laser 1 from Ortur is a very cool solid toy, which is interesting and pleasant to work with. But this is an engraver, not a cutter. He has a very narrow task, namely to teach people how to work with laser machines and programs for laser machines. Can you take them home? Well, only if you want to quarrel with the household - the machine produces a lot of smoke (even very, very much, and not just a lot). The kitchen hood will not cope, the whole apartment will be saturated with the smell of smoke for a long time.
