Nina Dobrev's Met Gala 2019 Look Was 3D-Printed to Her Exact Measurements

At times, the entrances at the 2019 Met Gala felt like a parade of advancements in apparel manufacturing. Zendaya's Cinderella dress lit up; Katy Perry walked around in a functioning chandelier. One of the most impressive design feats came courtesy of Zac Posen, who partnered with GE Additive x Protolabs to marry "camp" with 3D printing.

"I’ve always wanted to work with 3D printing to push the boundaries of art and fashion," Zac Posen tells Glamour. He has a history of incorporating technology with design, and for the Met Gala, in particular. In 2016, he made a gown for Claire Danes that literally glowed in the dark. This year, he incorporated 3D printing into the process, creating a series of striking ensembles for an incredibly stylish crew that included Nina Dobrev, Jourdan Dunn, Katie Holmes, Julia Garner, and Deepika Padukone.

Of all the looks Posen created for the 2019 Met Gala using this technology, Dobrev's really stands out, for multiple reasons. First off, it's quite different from the voluminous, floor-grazing gowns fans expect from the designer. (Dobrev's was a mini.) Then, there's the glossy, translucent fabric, which almost acts as a tromp d'oeil on the red carpet. Posen says it's meant to mimic "a glass slipper, perfume bottle, rock crystal interpreted through my draping. It takes you into a surreal futuristic fantasy."

"I wanted a creation that was light and felt like I was floating," Dobrev says. "Zac designed this bustier to be angelic and whimsical. At the end of the day, there was lots of talk between teams and I trust the professionals to do what they do best. Between Zac, Kate Young [her stylist], Chris McMillan [her hairstylist], and Charlotte Tilbury [her makeup artist], they discussed and decided on the direction that complemented but didn’t overwhelm the futuristic bodice and executed it beautifully."

Dobrev's dress actually consists of four parts, which come together in the shape of her exact measurements. The top layer, a bustier, is made using Somos Watershed XC 11122 Plastic, the almost glass-like finish a result of wet hand-sanding and spraying with a top coat.

Looking through this year's Met Gala outfits, it’s reasonable to wonder how some of the more intricate designs seem to be so perfectly moulded to each attendee’s silhouette.

The answer isn’t miracle tailoring or high-end design secrets, but a fashion trick borrowed from the tech world: 3D printing.

Fashion designer Zac Posen used 3D printing technology to create outfits for celebrities including Nina Dobrev, Katie Holmes, Jourdan Dunn, Deepika Padukone and Julia Garner.

Actor Dobrev, best known for her roles on The Vampire Diaries and Degrassi: The Next Generation, wore a short flared dress with a strapless bodice, made out of what appeared to be a structured, glossy, translucent material.

Posen told Glamour that it was designed to mimic "a glass slipper, perfume bottle, rock crystal interpreted through my draping. It takes you into a surreal futuristic fantasy".

He continued: "I wanted a creation that was light and felt like I was floating."

According to Dobrev, the fitting involved being scanned by a 3D camera while wearing a latex bodysuit. She said the process was repeated on six occasions, but only took about a minute and half. “It was a pretty futuristic concept,” she commented.

Posen said he’s wanted to work with 3D printers for a long time, and was able to execute his vision thanks to a partnership with GE Additive and Protolabs, two digital manufacturing companies.

The project had been a year in the making. Not long after the 2018 Met Gala, Posen flew to Pittsburgh to see a GE printing facility and learn about the different materials and see the SLA machines used for the process.

The designer told CNBC: “Then I started to learn with different materials what was possible, what’s not possible. And really the answer is, almost everything is possible.”

Model Jourdan Dunn’s 30-pound “rose gown” featured 37 individual petals took more than 1,100 hours (more than 45 days) to print.

Speaking about her dress, Dunn told The New York Times: “I’ve worn nothing like this before. It feels like I’m wearing art that is very expensive and very hefty.”

Also on Posen’s table wearing 3D printed ensembles were Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone, whose pink gown featured more than 400 embroidery pieces which were vacuum metalized and painted; Katie Holmes in a purple gown with a palm leaves collar piece; and The Americans actor Julia Garner who wore a headpiece also printed on the same SLA machine.

Posen has attended the gala every year since 1997, when he interned at the Costume Institute, but this was the first year he bought a table, we reportedly costs between $200,000 and $300,000 (£152,000 to £229,000).

3D printed fashion at the Met Gala 2019

The Met Gala is undoubtedly one of the world's most celebrated fashion nights, bringing together celebrities and young designers to promote innovation and design. This year's Met Gala 2019 saw amazing creations combining craftsmanship and 3D printed designer Zac Posen worked with GE Additive and Protolabs to create unique 3D printed designs, be it a suit or accessories. The range of models and different actresses perfectly reflects how 3D printing and fashion can go hand in hand!

3D technology has been infiltrating the high fashion sector for several years now, offering limitless possibilities in terms of design and complexity of shapes. We have seen the creation of original and unique dresses, shoes and accessories thanks to 3D printing of , and another example is the project led by Zac Posen, GE Additive and Protolabs. This time around, the three partners have taken things a step further by offering pieces inspired by moving natural objects. The goal is to show that “almost anything is possible with 3D printed ,” according to the American designer.

Entirely 3D printed dress at the Met Gala 2019

Called the Rose, this dress is undoubtedly the centerpiece of this Met Gala collection. The clothes worn by model Jourdan Dunn are made up of 21 rose petals printed on the 3D printer . Each petal measures 53 cm and weighs 0.4 kg. They were made on a 3D printer SLA - the printing process was carried out by department 3D printed by Protolabs in North Carolina. All these petals are mounted on an invisible modular grid printed on a titanium 3D printer using electron beam fusion technology.

Please note that the final dress weighs 13 kg and requires 700 hours of printing and 400 hours of post-processing. Each petal includes a primer coat and a chameleon effect car paint coat. The dress is fully adapted to the body of the British supermodel, as all design work began with a 3D digitization of her morphology. Finally, the garment is modular: it should be possible to add petals (up to 37 in total) to give the dress more length.

Bespoke bustier at the Met Gala 2019

3D printed glass like a bustier

Zac Posen created a completely new look for actress Nina Dobrev's bustier: after 3D scanning her body, the designer and his partners 3D printed a four-piece plastic bustier on SLA car. It took 200 hours of work to produce this custom-made piece with a vitrified exterior. Actress Nina Dobrev explains: “About a month and a half before meeting the Gala, Zach’s team made me do the most original example of my life! They put me in a spandex suit and I had to stand still in front of a 360° camera. It took a minute and a half to take 15-20 photos - we did it 6 times. A few days later I saw this futuristic bustier.”

3D printed accessories

Finally, there were a few accessories on the Met Gala red carpet. For example, actress Katie Holmes wore a collar of sorts attached to the neck of her dress, 3D printed on a resin machine. It is pearl purple palm leaves and requires 56 hours of 3D printing and finishing.

Protolabs also 3D printed a Multi Jet Fusion nylon headpiece for actress Julia Garner. The accessory is inspired by the wine sector and uses berry leaves. It took 22 hours to make the decoration. Also worth noting is the 3D printed embroidery on Deepika Padukone's dress, made on 3D printer SLA. In total, 408 embroideries were sewn on the dress of the Indian actress, which required more than 160 hours of work.

Women not only honored 3D printed throughout the evening, but Zac Posen himself wore 3D palm leaf lapel pins. Andrew Garfield and Vito Schnabel wore rose petal cufflinks, echoing the famous 3D printed dress. The buttons were 3D printed on a stereolithographic machine. One thing is for sure, these creations did not go unnoticed throughout the evening and 3D technology is definitely a factor!
