MachinaCorp Launches a New Printer Line with AstroPrint

MachinaCorp is a 3D printer manufacturer based in Canada. They have come a long way since they launched their Mk1 printer back in 2013. The company has always focussed on making printers with unmatching precision, speed, and reliability.
But this year they wanted to take it to the next level. For their new Mk3 printer line, they wanted to add touchscreen and cloud capabilities.
As Kyle Hermenean, Ceo & Co-Founder of Machina Corp puts it:
“We wanted to offer a complete hardware solution with embedded software with a high-end user interface, cloud capabilities. Our users are educated, sophisticated and expect a high quality/complete user experience when purchasing our products. We offer high-performance 3D printing hardware and a touchscreen, wifi enabled, cloud-enabled app was what we needed.”
What do printer manufacturers do when they need better software for their printers? Due to the lack of solutions, many of them try to develop their own software, but it usually turns to be a bad idea. MachinaCorp also faced some challenges when designing the software for their next generation of 3D printers:
“We had developed our own system in-house, but after a while, we recognized we are a hardware company and we needed to find a company focused on equally high quality, a complete software solution that would pair our hardware properly and add value.

Why do car manufacturers use 3D laser printing technologies? The answer is simple - 3D-stamps at once reduce the development time of a particular part for a car, and the whole car. We became familiar with this unique process by attending a Ford technical seminar.

By the way, Ford should be given credit for being the first in the world to master such technologies - it is at their disposal at 1988 for the first time turned out to be a unique 3D printer. Now almost all modern car builders are engaged in projects implemented using 3D printing. Even the Chinese - and they have already tested a new method of designing machines.
But not only has Ford effectively advanced in this direction over the years, it has also become a quality standard in the manufacture of mock-ups and prototypes, although not all of the competitors recognize this. By the way, the latest Ford GT, designed to "blow up" the 24 Hours of Le Mans race, was developed by specialists using the latest innovations in laser 3D printing.
How does it all work? Initially, a layout is made from the so-called technical plasticine, clay, sand or special foam, then it is optically processed, and then scanned in a three-dimensional format. It can be anything - a headlight, a steering wheel, a suspension element, any other part or a whole car.
Scanning takes place in a special CAD program by cutting the part into thin layers to create a more accurate 3D prototype. The printed layers are connected to each other using a laser, forming the desired shape.
Christoph Voigts, Ford Europe Design Solutions Specialist, told your correspondent that the materials used by the printer to create future elements can be various polymers, rubber, plastics and even liquid metal, which are mixed in the right proportions.
What is remarkable is that any part created on a 3D printer is not a reduced one, as many people think, but an exact copy of the original spare part or unit, whether it is a radiator grille or a wheel. Engineers calculate everything down to the smallest detail - from dimensions to geometric parameters, excluding any, even the smallest error.
If earlier, say, one radiator grill was made for at least six weeks, now it is made in 1 day! Moreover, designers and engineers can be located in different parts of the world, which does not in the least prevent them from designing future models remotely.
Today, as Bruno Alves, a specialist in prototyping and machining of the Ford Europe department, shared with the AvtoVzglyad portal, the company's employees are virtually developing over 500,000 various parts. Moreover, several years ago, a number of car elements could not be designed in this way and they were produced immediately in serial form.
