3D Printing Conventions and Conferences

General tech events, like CES in Las Vegas or GITEX in Dubai, are essentially global conventions. They draw together businessmen, engineers and the curious from all over the world. At such conventions and associated conferences, the real-life experience exchange in technology innovation takes place.

With the 3D printing industry going strong in the past two decades, we see more and more AM manufacturers taking part in such conventions and conferences.

Meetups at 3D Printing Events

Every community has its own leaders and celebrities. So does 3D printing community. It is a good chance to meet a YouTuber, for example, whose channel you are subscribed to and following most of the tutorials, reviews or other entertaining videos. In some cases, you can get a sticker or a selfy picture with them.

What to do if you are unable to visit an event? No worries, the dedicated 3D printing community members often share their experience with others. You can follow them on social media such as Twitter or YouTube where they often share it live.

If you are unable to watch a video but want to be updated live, then we would recommend following a particular hashtag on Twitter on Instagram like #CES22, #TCT21, #ERRF21, etc.

Dental 3D printing was first explored in the 1990s, when Align Technology started making mouthguards using a 3D printer. The next 20 years were spent trying to optimize the technology and achieve acceptable print quality. In 2012, the first implant was printed by Layer Wise, and a little later in the same year, a 3D-printed titanium lower jaw was implanted in the patient. From that moment began the active development of volumetric printing technology in dentistry.

So the Sokolniki Exhibition and Convention Center in Moscow hosted the annual international exhibition of additive technologies 3D Print Expo from 13 to 14 October.

Exhibition

3D Print Expo visitors took part in 3D printing workshops. They tested the MEDVR_LAP surgical simulator by MEDVR and representatives of Eidos-Innovation.

Thanks to PICASO 3D and Autodesk, guests have passed four levels of 3D printer usage: from zero “I haven’t seen it in my eyes” to advanced “A 3D printer has appeared at home”.
By voting for the best 3D printed hand, visitors determined the manufacturer of the highest quality 3D products.

Eight companies took part in the competition: Chevalier.ru, PICASO 3D, Total Z, Harz Labs, PROTOTYPE, MAESTRO, Idea-Z and MAGNUM. All participants were given a product model, plastic and tasks. As a result, the statuette from the PROTOTYPE company won the majority of votes and brought victory to its creators.

The guests also appreciated the most unusual exhibits in the 3D Art Gallery: an octopus from Total Z, a submarine from 3dminilab and balalaikas that could be played!

Show program

This time at 3D Print Expo for the first time there was a 3D Fashion Show with the participation of designers Snezhana Paderina from New York and Irina Tosheva from Skopje. There was also a video presentation of the LYSIS COLLECTION collection by American fashion designer Alexis Walsh.

Developed the theme of 3D technologies in the field of art, fashion and design on the Dimension Link media platform and presented the Palmette Art project.

The show also hosted the fifth annual 3D Print Awards for leaders in the additive industry. According to its results:

• Brand of the Year: IMPRINTA;
• "The best domestic manufacturer of 3D printers": Magnum 3D;
• "Best Innovative Company of the Year": "Ten.MedPrint";
• "Best Development of the Year": Picaso;
• "The most demanded manufacturer of consumables": REC;
• Best 3D Scanning Company: Thor3D;
• Rookie of the Year: Raise3D;
• Startup of the Year: Harz Labs.

The flagship Hercules Strong 3D printer from IMPRINTA was raffled among the visitors. It was taken by Maxim Frolov, who correctly answered most of the quiz questions on additive technologies.

Conference

Within the framework of 3D Print Expo, an industry B2B conference was held with the participation of 19 speakers.

It was opened by MHD deputy Alexander Smetanov. He noted that the Duma is actively developing legislative acts to develop 3D technologies and increase the number of technology centers.
Boris Kozlov, General Director of Arkon LLC, said that it is necessary to conduct a feasibility study in order to make the introduction of 3D printing in various industries effective.
Roman Gorbatov, a traumatologist-orthopedist, head of the laboratory of additive technologies of the FSBI "PFMIC" of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, spoke about 3D printing in medicine. He showed custom orthoses, titanium implants, hybrid endoprostheses, orthopedic insoles, mock-ups for training and preoperative planning, and gave examples of 3D printing in pharmacology and veterinary medicine.

The latest developments were shown by foreign speakers: Valentin Stoltz from Germany, James Smith from Belgium and Ishihara Tadao from South Korea.

Alexey Nikulin from Autodesk, Oleg Chizh from Siemens and Konstantin Chernov from Bosch Rexroth spoke about the use of 3D printing in their enterprises.

Marketing Director at Ostek Anton Bolshakov presented the results of a study on the perception of additive technologies in industry, conducted jointly with the organizer of the event, Smile-Expo. It turned out that 79% of respondents printed spare parts for cars and household appliances on their own; the quality of products was rated at 3.
