Tips on How to Find Funding for your 3D Printer for School

I get asked a lot if I have any recommendations on where to find funding to buy a 3D printer for the classroom or school. Not only does a good one run a decent price tag but sometimes administration doesn’t always agree on the need for such a forward thinking piece of technology.

Remember – make sure you read the fine print for each funding / sweepstakes page as they all have different rules! Some are for public school only, some are specific states or grade levels, etc.

Ask local businesses! You guys – this is HUGE! I cannot tell you how many thousands of dollars and perks our school has been benefited just by asking local businesses! It is 100% worth stopping in to ask! Local businesses just love to help local schools! And usually they welcome the tax deductions for their donations! There are SO many ways you can go about this.

You can sign up for a fundraiser night at a local restaurant. You can contact a large manufacturing plant that may have access to some older versions of 3D printers to donate. Hold a carnival with prizes sponsored by local businesses.

Talk to business managers and see if they’ll partner up to help donate or match funds for your 3D printer. Ask your local bank if they have any community grants for schools. Contact your local community college and see if they have any contacts or resources for 3D printer technology. It’s amazing what you can uncover when you put in a little time and start asking around.

3D Classroom Printer Recommendation:


As you guys know I am a Dremel Education ambassador so to be honest with you the Dremel Idea Builder 3D40 3D printer

is the only one that I personally have experience with – but it’s all I need. I am extremely happy with our 3d printer not only because it’s super easy to use (you can pull it out of the box and start printing in under 20 minutes even if you’ve never seen a 3D printer before!) but also because it can build such large projects!

It even has a touchscreen tutorial!

I thought for sure I would be a little tech stumped with a 3D printer – it sounded kind of scary after all! But pulling it out of the box it was like reading a dummy manual – it walked me through the whole process and was no big deal! Even my 10 year old son uses ours on a daily basis completely on his own.

It taught me how to feed and cut the filament, the temperature it was running, and everything! It even shows you how much is left on the project that you are currently printing!

The Idea Builder 3D40 shows you how to easily level the platform!

You can print via wi-fi, ethernet, or simply by plugging in a USB drive like we prefer since our wi-fi connection can be spotty. The printer is completely closed with a clear top and front door that can both open for convenience.

Like I mentioned before it has a very large base plate so that you can build large projects on it without worrying about size (10”x6”x6.7”). And if you have to level the building plate the touchscreen walks you through exactly what to do so you can’t go wrong!

Funding for 3D printing grows in lockstep with ambitions

Investors are rewarding a new generation of 3D printing startups that aim to disrupt industries ranging from aerospace and healthcare to housing and plant-based meat.

Venture funding for these companies reached $1.5 billion in the first six months of 2022, the most of any year except 2021, when more than $2 billion was raised, according to PitchBook data.
 

 


The current market for 3D-printed products remains niche, but the number of those niche applications has grown. Several recent megadeals have underscored the diversity of companies innovating in a category once defined by hobbyists.
 

  • Industrial manufacturer VulcanForms raised $250 million at a more than $1 billion valuation led by D1 Capital Partners. The startup operates a pair of production facilities in Massachusetts that combine laser-based 3D printing with precision machining and other advanced manufacturing techniques to make high-end components. 
     
  • Redefine Meat has developed a printer for plant-based steaks and reportedly raised $135 million in January led by Hanaco Ventures and Synthesis Capital. The steaks debuted commercially last year in Europe, and the company plans to expand into US and Asian markets in 2022. 
     
  • Icon Technology, which builds homes using a massive concrete "printer," reportedly raised $392 million in 2021 with a round led by Norwest Venture Partners and Tiger Global. After starting its home production efforts last year, the company recently debuted an improved model of its printer.
     
  • Formlabs, which specializes in prototyping machines, raised $150 million at a $2 billion valuation in a round led by SoftBank's Vision Fund 2 in 2021. Its professional printers are used in industries ranging from healthcare and education to jewelry and entertainment. 

Despite winning VC deals, 3D printing companies that went public during the SPAC craze of recent years have faced a chilly reception. 

Desktop Metal was valued at $2.8 billion post-money in its SPAC deal and now trades at a market capitalization around $711 million. Such high-profile stumbles—others include Markforged and Velo3D—may weigh on the future valuations of late-stage companies in the space.

Simplifyber, the developer of 3D printed apparel and footwear technology, announced that it has raised $3. 5 million in the first round of funding from At One Ventures.

The startup's first products will hit the market next year, according to Fast Company.

The prototype sneaker that is supposed to be this first mass-produced product has already been printed - and potential partner brands of the startup can appreciate its benefits.

Scientists from Simplifyber have radically rethought the process of making clothes and shoes: now you do not need to sew or knit, but you can simply print the desired model.

The start-up uses liquid cellulose (a mixture of wood pulp and other plants) in 3D printing devices as a "fabric".

“We created a new fabric-like material using some knowledge of the paper industry, but that’s where the similarity to paper ends,” says Maria Intscher-Ovrang, co-founder and CEO of the startup, “I would say that the material is very similar to leather ".

Maria also emphasizes that by varying the density of the material, it is possible to create different textures in different parts of the product.

For example, designers were able to integrate "threads" of various thicknesses and strengths into the sneaker prototype, and the soles were generally printed from a different material (in collaboration with HP).

Also, the technology allows you to "maximum individualize" models of clothing and footwear.

“You can even make an impression of the foot or figure from the scan so that the product fits you exactly,” explains Maria Intscher-Ovrang.

Models, as in the case of any other things printed in 3D, are created in special computer programs. The output is a completely finished T-shirt or sneakers.

End products are biodegradable. They can also be reused in the manufacture of new models

The startup plans to release the first models at the end of the year, and then launch the market. But later he intends to start mass production.

The founders believe that this method of creating clothes and shoes can become even more accessible than traditional technologies.

Although more environmentally friendly materials tend to cost more today, the company has a vision to change this and achieve production volumes that are comparable to the classic but more environmentally friendly.
