School 3D Printer Maker Challenge ignites STEM involvement

Integrated STEM education through School 3D Printer Maker Challenges

Integrated Science, Technology, Education, and Math (“STEM”) education is becoming increasingly important in today’s technology-driven world. Teachers are tasked with trying to entice kids towards STEM and kids are told often how important mathematics and the sciences are. We believe, however, that a more hands-on approach to learning technology — such as a School 3D Printer Maker Challenge — not only helps kids gain a deeper understanding of the subjects, but also a greater appreciation of how important technology is in their daily lives.

The relevance of tech and its accessibility are key for kids. Growing up, parents and teachers told us that math was important, but often did not explain why it is important. It took a lot more to make us see how math, making things, and playing with science actually can be fun! At Airwolf 3D, we play with technology every day. We learn every day. We invent every day. This playful culture of creativity, exploration, and invention is what we’d really like to teach and spread around the world.

“We believe that 3D printing will make the usefulness and fun of STEM ‘click’ in the minds of kids, which is why we’re so excited about our involvement in the ocMaker Challenge. ” — Eva Wolf, Airwolf CEO & Co-Founder

This is just the kind of fun challenge for teachers and kids that really can inspire. By turning ideas into designs and then transforming those designs into physical objects, kids can learn how to invent. By developing a product, kids learn how manufacturing and design cycles work and may be inspired to invent independently. This is why we’re a proud supporter of the ocMaker Challenge where kids get to use Airwolf 3D printers to invent!

What is a School 3D Printer Maker Challenge?

A School 3D Printer Maker Challenge is an integrated STEM project that incorporates elements of art and design. The students must design and manufacture a product. For the ocMaker Challenge, the event was organized and promoted by the Orange County Department of Education and CTEoc (Career Technical Education of Orange County) and supported by Vital Link. Airwolf 3D proudly serves as the event’s main sponsor and has the honor of providing the prize money for the ocMaker Challenges.

The challenge is to:

“Design and Build (or significantly repurpose) a physical product, that will solve a problem, a need or a want.”

A Four-level 3D Printing Competition

La Quinta High School’s exhibit demonstrating their innovative STEM challenge solution.

There are four different levels of entries. Level 1 is a creative approach to create a static or non-functional prototype, such as a 3D print of their idea. At Level 2, the part has to do something. It must be dynamic and have some functionality. For example, it might turn on or have hinged parts that move. Level 3 starts to kick it up a notch: The part needs to include some form of “intelligent” technology. That means that the prototype responds automatically and selectively to a particular condition or situation. Level 4 requires all of the elements of level 3, plus the prototype displayed at the final exhibit must also include some form of tooling or fabrication process. Examples of fabrication processes include bending metal or cutting wood.

The deliverables

Participants’ exhibitions consist of a presentation, video, and prototype. First, they have to create some form of physical prototype or model. Then they also must prepare a presentation board. Finally, students also have to produce a promotional or demo video.

Rules and constraints

Elevating Wheelchair made by a group of ocMaker Challenge 2016 winners from Anaheim High School.

There are not too many rules and constraints. The product must be created specifically for the maker challenge. Another rule is that the students need to be able to clearly identify the STEM concepts used in the process. As students move through the design process, they also learn how to articulate to the judges the STEM concepts used. This exercise facilitates deeper learning and develops the ability to recognize STEM concepts in future problem-solving scenarios, empowering students to go further in the future!

More 3D Printer Maker Challenges

Airwolf 3D is no stranger to educational experiences and hackathons. In addition to serving as the main sponsor of all three annual ocMaker Challenges, Airwolf 3D recently completed a similar event at Warner Bros. in which participants were working adults, not young students. Furthermore, they only had 32 hours to complete their project. Read more about the Warner Bros. Hackathon.

3D printing contests and olympiads for schoolchildren

The essence of education is to prepare children for their future profession. But in addition to the preparation itself, it is also involved in helping to choose the future development of the student. If a child has found his vocation, then he can use the skills already acquired for the benefit of both their development and to receive benefits. For example, by competing in competitions and olympiads, participants can get an advantage in the form of additional points when entering a university. Already, there are many competitions of various formats and sizes. If a child is interested in 3D printing, then he can test his skills and get experience in real-life applications of 3D printing in serious projects. Next, we will look at the most popular and successful competitions and olympiads, as well as courses where students can gain experience and understand whether they like 3D printing or not.

3D printing in education

Unlike the classical subjects studied in school, 3D printing is the closest thing to the practical application of skills. Thanks to this, and also because of the visibility of the process, it is much easier for a student to get involved in this industry. In addition, 3D printing is part of many more serious industries - engineering, prototyping, development and manufacturing. That is, immediately after learning the basics, you can choose a more in-depth study of a particular area.

But besides learning the technology itself, 3D printing can be applied in more practical ways, using it only as a tool in the educational process. For example, in mathematics lessons it will be much more visual to have three-dimensional figures and three-dimensional graphs in physical embodiment, rather than trying to translate them into a plane. In biology and anatomy classes, it will be possible to hold anatomically accurate examples of human organs in your hands. In physics, many processes can be explained by analogy, and 3D printing makes it easy to produce the necessary installations and stands for visual demonstration, especially of various mechanical devices.

Types of competitive activities

Despite the novelty of 3D printing in education, many competitions directly or indirectly use it. But it is worth separating competitions not only by names and venues, but also by type of activity and necessary skills. Basically, there are two formats: Olympiads and project competitions. It is not always possible to find a direct mention of such a division, but the principle of division is quite simple: the Olympiads are held for a short period of time and are divided into stages, while project competitions have a longer duration and pose more complex tasks. Also, do not forget about the age division. Often, students from 14 to 18 years old are allowed to participate in competitions. But some competitions are designed for younger competitors, such as Big Challenges or JuniorSkills. Next, we will consider all the variety of competitions for schoolchildren dedicated to 3D printing and using it.

All-Russian Olympiad in 3D technologies

This activity belongs to the Olympiad format and is carried out by the 3D Education Association. Schoolchildren participating in it will have to show their skills first at the regional stage, and then at the all-Russian stage. The last stage has already taken place in such children's camps as Artek and Smena.

In total, there are 3 competencies in the competition:

  • 3D Pro - students are given a task, the essence of which is to manufacture a device or its prototype using volume modeling programs and 3D printers

  • 3D Art - students must make a creative composition on a given topic using 3D pens

  • Volumetric scanning - as the name implies, the students will have to scan an object and process it to obtain a high-quality model.

Also, each category is divided into 2 age groups: 7-8 grades and 9-11 grades. In each group, participants are evaluated separately, which makes it possible to identify the predisposition of schoolchildren who have just begun to study additive technologies. This Olympiad is the largest in Russia: more than 4000 schoolchildren, about 300 schools from 32 regions of Russia took part in the regional qualifying stages, about 1500 schoolchildren reached the final. And the geography of the Olympics extends throughout Russia.

But before participating, it is worth considering that it is necessary to have at least basic skills in 3D modeling and using a 3D printer, since at the Olympiad itself, schoolchildren must use the skills they have already acquired. In addition to the possibility of a trip to the camp, the student will receive a unique experience in the development and production of a product in a short time. Even if you fail to pass to the final stage, participation in the competition will allow you to evaluate your current skills and knowledge. You can read more about the Olympiad on their official website.

3DBUM

The most popular and well-known project competition dedicated to additive technologies, in particular 3D printing. Schoolchildren will have to develop a full-fledged product according to a given technical task and defend their project. They are given several months to do this, during which they can attend master classes dedicated to the topic of the nomination.

Initially, the competition aimed to introduce schoolchildren to project activities and teach them how to work in a team, and 3D printing technology was taken as the basis, which could be easily used by schoolchildren on their own. But at the moment, thanks to the expansion of the number of nominations, schoolchildren can learn not only how to work with 3D printers, but also more serious CNC machines. This became possible as a result of the assistance of universities: they became resource centers where participants can make the missing parts. Participation in competitions is not limited to manufacturing, because each nomination is assigned to one university, and the winners in this nomination can receive additional points upon admission. Among the partners, you can also see large corporations such as Autodesk, PICASO 3D, Roland, etc.

It is also worth mentioning about the offshoot of this competition for children - 3D Boom Junior. Junior students can take part in it. The essence remains the same - to develop a project according to a given technical task. But the approach is different - instead of using serious CNC machines, participants bring their ideas to life with the help of the educational line of LEGO Education constructors. In addition, if necessary, you can use more serious tools, such as programs for volumetric modeling. Since the basis of both 3DBOOM and 3D Boom Junior is the same, the skills gained while participating in the junior version of the competition can be very useful when participating in the annual “senior” competition.

More information about 3DBUM can be found on the official website.

JuniorSkills

Unlike the above competitions, JuniorSkills is a whole career guidance and training program, therefore, the goals are different - identifying talents at an early age and helping to acquire skills and knowledge. A part of this program is a competition in 19 qualifications. Although all programs are devoted to fairly large areas, many of them are directly or indirectly tied to additive technologies, such as “CAD Engineering Design (CAD)” and “Prototyping”. Pupils not only take part in the competition of young professionals, but also attend practical classes in the nomination of interest.

This program is sponsored not only by companies, but also by entire corporations, such as Roskosmos, Cisco, Ascon, Festo and others. Also, material and informational support is provided by universities and universities. More information about participation in the competition can be found on the official website of JuniorSkills.

Big challenges

This competition is part of the All-Russian competition of design and research works for schoolchildren, and the final is held at the Sirius Educational Center.

A distinctive feature of this competition is a small number of restrictions - only the subject is set, within which it is necessary to develop a project. In this regard, and also due to the intersection of some topics with the competencies of other competitions, you can make only one project, but at the same time submit it to several competitions at once. The benefit of "Big Challenges" has an extensive list of areas: from Agro-industrial technologies to Modern energy. If you are interested in this competition, then you can apply for participation on the official website of the program.

Courses and further education

Before participating in many competitions, you should study additive technologies at least at a basic level. This is necessary not only to gain knowledge and skills, but also to understand the interests of the student. Fortunately, in our time, many schools already have 3D printers and even additional education circles completely dedicated to 3D printing. Next, we will look at the most promising projects on which the student will be able to learn 3D printing and 3D modeling.

Quantorium

This educational program combines a huge number of circles dedicated to modern technologies. Additive technologies are considered from a practical point of view, that is, the student receives the skills and knowledge necessary to apply 3D printing to larger projects. But some areas are almost entirely devoted to volumetric modeling, such as PromDesignQuantum or Hightech.

Most of the directions are available to students from 10 to 18 years old, but some directions can only be enrolled from the age of 12 due to the specifics of the equipment used in the training. At the moment, there are 110 Quantorium children's technology parks in 76 regions of Russia. If you are interested in this project, you can sign up on the official website of the Quantorium program.

Engineering

MSTU im. N.E. Bauman decided to follow modern trends in education and opened his own network of educational centers for children and adolescents. The goal of the entire project is the career guidance of schoolchildren and the development of engineering thinking.

Courses are conducted in many areas, some of which affect 3D printing and 3D modeling, but the courses “Young Engineer Course”, “Industrial Design”, “3D Modeling and Additive Technologies” and “Engineering Graphics” are most closely related to the topic of additive technologies . In all these courses, not only additive technologies themselves are studied, but also their application in practice in various industries. Do not forget about a pleasant bonus upon successful completion of courses - benefits for admission to MSTU. N.E. Bauman! More information about prices and registration can be found on the official website of Engineering.

The competition is completed, the jury is still recovering from the Tsunami Creative, but is ready to name the winners and distribute prizes. You are welcome under cat.

First, let's remind you about the conditions of the competition, sponsors and prizes, especially since this time there was a pleasant surprise.

Conditions

Participants were required to model a flying bear as they see it. The task was purely creative in nature, at least it was required to show renderings of a 3D model. If desired, it was possible to go further by printing, and if desired, coloring a flying bear. Initially, 3D printing was a prerequisite, but we decided to relax this requirement so that modelers who do not yet have their own 3D printer or convenient access to additive technology can take part in the competition.

In total, almost four dozen works (thirty-nine, to be precise) were submitted for the competition, some of the participants submitted several projects at once, which does not contradict the conditions of the competition. Each application was considered separately. Links to all competitive works are available in the announcement at this link.

Prize money and sponsors

Prizes for participants were provided by three companies: consumables manufacturer Filamentarno!, software developer Ascon, and 3D printer manufacturer Flyingbear.

There should have been two winners: we promised the main prize a Flyingbear Ghost 5 3D printer complete with filaments from Filamentarno! and a license for the computer-aided design system "Compass-3D Home" from the company "Ascon", and the winner in the nomination "Reader's Choice Award" - filaments and a license for Compass-3D Home.

And now the surprise:

Surprise

As you already know, we love changing the rules as we go. Don't worry, no one will be offended. The fact is that the general sponsor of the competition, the Flyingbear company, liked the presented works so much that they decided to establish an additional, special nomination and add another 3D printer to the prize fund - a photopolymer Flyingbear Shine 2. In other words, we will have three winners in total instead of two. The main winner was determined by a joint jury of sponsors and the administration of the portal, the winner in the nomination "Reader's Choice Award" was determined strictly by likes, and the owner of the bonus prize was appointed by Flyingbear.

Winners

The main prize-winner of is Alexey Filatov (alex.forward) with the work "Flyingbear honey: in flight for a dream".

In the opinion of the jury, this work best demonstrated both the artistic talent of the author and the entire workflow - from sketches to 3D printing and design. The fact that this is not just a model, but a useful product, an original lamp, also played a role. For his efforts, Alexey receives a Flyingbear Ghost 5 3D printer, three spools of filament of his choice from Filamentarno! (any except Termax) and a license for Compass-3D Home from Ascon.

Reader's Choice Award leaves Marksheyder with the work “Reply to Roscosmos, you say? Nate", which scored a record 81 likes.

The author will receive two spools of plastic from Filamentarno! (any except Termax) and a license for CAD "Compass-3D Home" from the company "Ascon".

A special prize from Flyingbear will go to Dmitry Ivanov (idatomsk) with the project “Everything starts with a dream!”.

Regarding this wonderful work, the sponsors explain that it was printed on a photopolymer 3D printer, and Flyingbear is preparing new Shine 2 stereolithography systems. There is only one small hitch: the company is just starting production of new systems, so Dmitry you'll have to wait for your 3D printer until next March when shipments start.

But that's not all: Flyingbear offers $10 discount coupons for purchases in the AliExpress brand store to each contestant. To activate, you will need a special promotional code valid until the end of the current month. Since this is a secret promotional code, we will not name it here, but we will provide it upon request - just write in a personal.

Flyingbear comment:

“We are honored to sponsor this event, and we are very grateful to every author who participated. Our team carefully studied each work and was impressed by the variety of creative ideas. We hope that in the future we will have the opportunity to support such contests again. Thanks again to everyone!”

Congratulations to the winners and thank you all for participating!
