Fully Functional Platform Jack is Amazingly 3D Printable as One Piece - No Supports Required - 3DPrint.

Within the the desktop 3D printing space, there are some 3D printable open source designs that have virtually become legends among the many. These are objects that can be downloaded and 3D printed free of charge, that exhibit functionality that proves to the world that 3D printing is capable of creating much more than simple doodads. Some examples might be the 3D printable working 5-speed transmission, as well as more simple creations such as the LeFabShop Elephant. However, a particular design, which has the potential to become one of the most popular and most downloaded designs we’ve seen in a long time, is the newly released Platform Jack, created by a Seattle-based company called intentional3D.

Their design for the 3D printable Platform Jack is nothing short of amazing. Typically when we download designs to 3D print, we try to avoid objects that require a lot of support material, quite frankly because support removal can be a pain in the neck. Also we usually look for objects which don’t require much assembly, as assembly usually means multiple parts, and potentially longer print times. Unfortunately though, it is very difficult to find fully functional designs that don’t require a lot of support or the printing of multiple parts. This is what makes the Platform Jack so unique and so amazing.

The Platform Jack is printed in one single piece, although it features several movable parts. At the same time, it requires no printing of support material and is fully functional right off of your 3D printer’s print bed. It merely requires a slight turn of the knob, which breaks a tiny connection point, to begin using the device. As you can see in the animated image and the video at the bottom of this article, turning the threaded knob clockwise causes the scissor arms to be sucked in, thus lifting and separating the top and bottom platforms from each other. Turning it counter-clockwise does the opposite, bringing the two platforms closer and closer together until they ultimately touch one another.

The design, which was originally uploaded on July 16th, has since been iterated upon in order to make it function better. Initially some people were having an issue where the scissor arms came off of their printer fused together, thus not allowing it to operate correctly. Intentional3D, however, has since modified the design, by increasing the tolerance from 0.5 to 0.65mm to ensure this fusing does not take place.

So far, dozens of people have downloaded and printed this design out, and it is quickly becoming one of those unique 3D printable legends among the many. What you opt to do with your 3D printed Platform Jack is up to you, but so far, we’ve seen it used as a smartphone holder, a platform for figurines, and more.

How to love your own ears

Whoever invented the earbuds deserves a monument. After all, we all love “loud and clear”, but few people want to carry bulky studio “cans” on their heads, especially when it comes to walking or while away the time in the train. And yet there is no limit to perfection. Even the already comfortable "droplets" can be perfectly adjusted to the individual user. To do this, you need absolutely nothing: a 3D printer and silicone.

Lantos Technologies has built an entire business around this. “Our headphones are custom-made to give people easy access to high-quality sound with a personalized fit,” says Brian Fliegor, Chief Audio Technician of the company. The bottom line is that the size and shape of the ear canal is as individual as a fingerprint, and the tighter the silicone shell fits, the higher the level of comfort and the lower the level of extraneous noise. Many retail headphone kits even come with a set of multiple pairs of different sized shells to choose from. But for some, this may not be enough. The shell can then be printed from NinjaFlex, or a mold can be printed. That's just how to get an accurate three-dimensional picture of the channel?

A technology developed by Professor Douglas Hart of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is used for this purpose. A special probe with an elastic membrane is inserted into the ear, after which the membrane is filled with air, tightly enveloping the canal walls. And no, it doesn't hurt at all. A miniature digital camera then takes pictures of the inside of the membrane, from which an accurate 3D model is created. Without any x-rays and tomographs! It remains only to print droplets.

Headphones obtained in this way not only transmit high-quality sound, but also sit tightly in place, which will be appreciated by lovers of morning runs along the track, somersaults on a trampoline, motocross, mother-in-law lectures and other extreme fun. Question price? Only $269for a couple. If the price tag seems crazy to you, then compare it with the cost of professional "droplet" monitors used by entertainers. Small panda enters the big market

China's Hueway Technology announced the launch of a new 3D printer "Small Panda". Despite the questionable company name, the Shenzhen-based manufacturer has achieved impressive results this year, selling more than 31,000 printers overseas.

The novelty is intended primarily for educational institutions and beginner printers. According to the company, the design uses German-made electromechanical elements that are resistant to wear. Unlike earlier models, the "bear cub" received a plastic lining, while retaining the metal chassis. The operation of the device can be controlled both using the on-board 3.5-inch touch screen, and through a Wi-Fi connection. The hot end has been rheologically reworked to reduce clogging, and the onboard battery allows printing to continue during brief power outages.

SLS printing in every color of the rainbow

Everything is fine with laser sintering, except for one thing: there is no color palette as such. Process features do not allow sintering of powders of different shades. The point here is not only the unreality of the process itself, but also the mixing of expensive residual consumables. SLS-printing practically does not produce waste, because the leftovers can always be reused, but what about mixed granules of different colors? And this is when working with plastics. And what about metals?

It's much easier to just paint finished products. The founder of the well-known manufacturer of SLS printers for printing with metals EOS, Hans Langer invested in DyeMansion, instructing them to create a device for convenient and high-quality painting of finished models. The result of the efforts was the installation under the article DM60. With a working volume of 10 to 51 liters, it is possible to color large prints, or rather large batches of smaller models: the company cites 300 eyeglass frames as an example. One cycle takes a little less than three hours, during which the products are electropolished and painted in a sealed pressure chamber. At the same time, the color palette is practically unlimited and even includes fluorescent shades, and finished products are not afraid of water.

So far, DyeMansion is using the new device to fill orders, but the device is expected to hit the market soon. The start of sales is scheduled for the second half of next year. More information can be found here.
