Rise of the Gunpla Models - Anime on DTF

nine0004 600 views

Hello everyone! Before continuing on with subsequent Bandai toys, I'll branch out to the Gunpla models that made both the anime series and the company famous. But first, I’ll tell you which companies have tried to realize the potential of this franchise.

As I mentioned in "Part 0 of the History of the Gundam Series", the Clover toy company was the animation sponsor for Nippon Sunrise. The final work in their joint collaboration was MS Gundam. Initially, Clover only released versions of Chogokin, but when the anime ratings began to dive down, the company decided to sell other sets, such as:

  • Plastic figures of armor, in which half of the body seemed to shine through, and one could see the insides of the armor;
  • Metal minifigures with detachable weapons;
  • Collectible models using the injection molding method;
  • 80mm bronze figurines;

At some point before Bandai launched Gunpla, a temporary license for Gundam products was acquired by Orion, a subsidiary of Takara. Within a short period of time, she produced a series of silver and gold figurines that could be taken apart and reassembled. nine0005

At the same time, another series of armor models went on sale, which looked more like the original draft version of Gunboy. The figurines were not disassembled, but could be equipped with removable items, and, unlike the neighboring series, they were painted.

After Orion lost his license, Cosmos entered the game, specializing in gacha machines and somehow acquired Clover's printing plates. The pirated series "Space Warrior Dungan" appeared on the market. The first models were made of metal and looked very much like the original 80mm figurines. nine0005

The 30mm flat base armor models from Season 1 were then sold in capsules. They were so even that they could stand on a smooth surface and not fall. The assortment was also presented with 30 mm figurines of regular width. Among them were ordinary metal armor without paint, already painted models, as well as ultra rare ones with gold decoration. In one of the metal collections one could find two high armors YMS-15 Gyan and RX-78-2. The latest series included metallic mini-armor, the body of which was one color, and the limbs were another. nine0005

Then erasers began to appear in gacha devices, similar to the Clover series being produced, but called by the general word G-series. Like the original series, they were also half "see through".

Gundam fans collected figurines and tried to make similar ones from scrap materials. For the first time in this universe, mini dioramas were recreated using eraser bellows from the gacha machine. The term "diorama" refers to a scale model that recreates certain events, natural scenes or landscapes for education and entertainment. Hobby Japan and Model Graphix magazines began publishing the first fan models, and also released a "scratch build" of the Zaku II by Akito Iwase. nine0005

Last issue of Toy Story, I ended up saying that Bandai needed to strengthen its position in the toy market. Gundam fans began to ask the company to release similar sets, as in the anime "Space Battleship Yamato". Bandai seized the moment and acquired the rights to the franchise in December 1979.

Let me say a few words about the designers of the Gunpla models. Satoru Matsumoto started working for Bandai in 1970. He did the planning and figure design for the Space Battleship Yamato anime. At that time, he was the senior executive manager of the hobby department and factory manager in Shizuoka. He took over the development of the Gunpla series, but left responsibility for development and design to Masatoshi Muramatsu. nine0005

In an interview, Muramatsu said that the process of creating a model was very difficult. The front and side views did not match in the drawing, so it was difficult to fit them together. There were many problems with the legs, namely with the ankles. If the mounts were rigid, then mobility was lost, and if they were too weak, then they would disappear. There were difficulties with the color base. In the anime, Gundam is white, but the model was obtained with dark impurities.

The Bandai model catalog at the time of 1980 had two types of designations: "Large" and "Small". Muramatsu felt the need for scale notation. The completed drawing was measured again and found to be nearly 1/144 scale, which became the new designation. nine0005

At the same time, they tried to develop a model RX-78-2 in 1/100 scale, but it came out 1/97, and the appearance was too similar to Clover's chogokin toys. The plans were to make a collapsible model, in which the lower and upper parts of the body were fastened using a core fighter. But the fuselage could not be attached to the fighter, and the rocket launcher was not attached to Gundam's shoulder. And if the problem with the fighter was resolved, then the rocket launcher had to be abandoned. In the final version, it was changed to a bazooka that could be placed in the hand and contained a spring mechanism. nine0005

Bandai first began speculating about making a decision on anime pilots on the front of the box. Initially, such details were discarded so that people could not complain that the kit was not complete, since the character model was missing. In the end, it was decided to take a chance with a 1/144 scale model and release it with an unusual cover for the company.

The company analyzes the anime or other products it releases and listens to the fans. A plan is then drawn up to implement the Gunpla model, which requires both studying the anime and reproducing realistic mechanical dynamics. Sometimes designers turn to third-party experts for advice. The result is a mixture of fantasy and reality. nine0005

Next, multi-view drawings are created, which are then used to create a 3D model on the computer. Plastic models cannot be used unless the parts are correctly combined. Therefore, precise design is an important part of model development.

The drawings are then printed and sent for proofing. At first, I had to make a draft version in full-fledged forms. Now this process has become many times easier, since a 3D printer is used for test models at minimal cost, and only then they move on to forms. nine0005

Simultaneously with model drawings, molds are produced and used to create parts. The first molds were made of wood, each of them corresponded to its part, and if there were any defects, it was very difficult to correct them. The fine adjustments and finishing were done by hand by the craftsmen, so that it was impossible to make identical shapes.

In the future, the plant will switch to metal templates, which will be created using high-precision laser machines. Some new molds weigh over 1 ton. They are lifted by a crane from the storage area under the floor and delivered to the molding machines. Of all the molds ever used in production, only one was discarded. These forms are essentially hidden assets that continue to generate returns. nine0005

Despite the fact that high-precision equipment is now used for calculations when creating forms, no one has refused human correction. Over time, the molds become unusable, as the molten plastic gets stuck on the surface and interferes with production. For this, there is a special department of engineers who manually restore the forms for further use. Through a microscope, they look for even the tiniest flaws and get rid of them with the help of special tools. nine0005

The molds are then tested, where operators confirm that the plastic has reached all corners and formed the expected shape. Engineers make countless subtle temperature and time adjustments to bring products closer to perfection. The process is repeated over and over to get everything right.

Models use plastic pellets in a variety of materials including polystyrene, acrylic, ABS and many more. Some heads have been developed exclusively for the Gunpla. Plastic pellets are melted at temperatures above 200 degrees Celsius and injected into molds under a pressure of 150 tons. Now one plate from a set of parts is made in 15-20 seconds. Even now, employees work in three shifts to keep the plant running 24/7 throughout the year. They all wear Earth Federation uniforms and also use ranks to separate powers. nine0005

In addition to clothing, the interior also corresponds to the spirit of the Gundam universe. Molding machines are painted to match the armor, automatic doors and toilets are made to match the structure of the ship, and autonomous robots that have the design of Zeon armor are used to transport large items.

July 19, 1980 Rx-78-2 in 1/144 scale sold for 300 yen and was cheaper than the Chogokin series. In the same month, but a little later, Rx-78-2 was released in a different 1/100 scale. nine0005

By August, it was decided to diversify the armor series by adding models of spaceships. For this, it was decided to use the drawings of the already released models of the Yamato Space Battleship to create cruisers from the Earth Federation "White Base" and "Musai" from the Principality of Zeon. Musai was the first to be sold in 1/1200 scale, and White Base came out in December.

After the Zeon ship, new models of Zeon armor went into development. In September, Gundamu was accompanied by MS-06S Char's Zaku II in 1/144 scale. In order not to waste time on production, this model had a movable knee joint and fixed ankles. nine0005

November added one 1/144 scale model MS-07 Gouf and armor MS-09 Dom from the 1/100 line. The first had movable shoulder joints, and now it was possible to hold the weapon with both hands. The second model did not have a unique collapsibility. Even, on the contrary, for the first time they decided to mold a wrist with a weapon so that they would not have to insert, for example, a bazooka into a fist with a hole.

While new models were being sold, it was decided to correct the first ones. For example, the 1/144 scale RX-78-2 armor had only two beam saber pieces. If the fashion designer wanted to stuff them into a satchel, like in the animated version, then he had to cut the saber and shorten it. As a result, requests for additional spare parts have increased in the Bandai Customer Service Center. Therefore, over time, Bandai added another beam saber. nine0005

In December 1980, along with the 1/144 scale MSM-07 Z'Gok armor, three 1/60 scale models were released:
