3D printer Biochemistry professor Alan Drummond creates detailed models of trilobites by printing them on 3D printer . To do this, he uses a Form 1 3D printer from Formlabs, and also uses Shapeways 3D metal 3D printing .
3D printing technology may be the future of manufacturing, but today it is often used to explore the past. Alan Drummond, professor of biochemistry at the University of Chicago, has a passion for trilobites. They are an extinct class of marine arthropods that lived in the ocean for over 270 million years. Wanting to get something more than images and organic remains of these creatures, the professor decided to collect visual data on the structure of trilobites, which could later be turned into copies of them.
“I always wanted to hold a trilobite in my hands, pick it up from the rock, turn it over, run my fingers along its needles,” the professor explained on The fossil forum.
3D printing a trilobite might sound like fun, but Drummond soon realized that he was in for a challenge. Looking at the remains or illustration of a trilobite, many fans of 3D printing will be delighted: the many thin limbs and long, protruding antennae are ideal for 3D printing.
Thinking about this, the professor of biochemistry decided to combine several species of trilobites, sacrificing some details that would not survive subsequent processing anyway, and create the most suitable for 3D printed model.
The pencil sketches were transferred to the professional Inkscape editor and then to the Blender 3D modeling program. The result is a full-fledged 3D model ready for printing. Its main prototype was a species of trilobite called Ceraurus, which inhabited the planet 470-445 million years ago. It had enough parts for 3D printing and at the same time the necessary structural strength to survive it. Many other views also inspired the designer of the model. Not without invented elements necessary to improve print settings.
“The first step in this project was to look at as many trilobites as possible and select one,” said Alan Drummond.
“I have always liked these creatures, but when I saw the exhibits at the Chicago Field Museum, they turned from fossils to living organisms for me. I couldn't believe my eyes. I thought trilobites were flat, though beautiful, primitive creatures. When I saw those exhibits, I realized that they were far from being flat and primitive.”
With access to a Formlabs Form 1 3D printer at his university, Professor Drummond was immediately able to print the first model, which was made from photopolymer with a resolution of 0.05 mm. This transparent trilobite was followed by an improved model in black photopolymer, which Drummond washed with isopropanol immediately after printing. However, the professor was dissatisfied with the result. It seemed to him that the limbs came out "too crustacean." Appropriate changes were made before the model was sent to Shapeways for printing.
Professor Drummond had previously used her services for other 3D projects, so he believed that this company could make a high quality 3D metal trilobite model.
And he was not disappointed: a series of metal-printed Ceraurus trilobite models looked much better than photopolymer products. Drummond also used Frosted Ultra Detail technology to print another extremely detailed trilobite model with photopolymer.
The professor's series features a stunning bronze piece, also printed by Shapeways but finished with Drummond's own technique.
“I oxidized these models with sulfur liver, which resulted in a greenish coating on the bronze, and then removed it from the protruding parts of the model,” the professor explained. What a noticeable difference! Now all the details are visible!
The trilobite 3D bronze model looks more impressive than the first photopolymer attempts. Professor Drummond is, of course, very pleased with the end result.
“This model may actually be the most accurate trilobite reconstruction in the world,” he says. – His limbs were reproduced based on data from Stormer's research 1939th and 1951.
To complete the project, Drummond crafted a model in solid silver that complements the bronze version perfectly.
We hope that the professor will continue to explore the world we live in now: the world of 3D printing.
