    Who doesn't love quadcopters? This is both great fun and quite a useful tool. It has already come to the point that pizza is being delivered by small drones. However, with the help of such a device, you can not only deliver dinner, but also cook it. Or unleash the Third World War.

    The true intentions of a good boy named Austin Hogwut can only be guessed at. Let's just say that he came up with the idea to celebrate Thanksgiving with a roast turkey (which is traditional) cooked with a homemade flamethrower mounted on a 3D printed quadcopter (which is somewhat unusual).

    The genius of design thought himself

    The flow of negativity towards Hogwoot went through the roof. Concerned citizens were interested in the welfare of the unfortunate bird, from time to time checking the oven - was the festive dinner burnt? The counter continues to click: at the time of this writing, the number of views on Youtube has already reached 124,289, and this is in four days. Everyone was especially surprised by the logo of the famous retailer of goods for DIYers HobbyKing, flaunting on the video. Representatives of the company have not yet commented on their support for the young pyromaniac.

    However, Austin himself is no stranger to public attention.     The Polimotor 2 project, led by pioneering engineer Matti Holtzberg and sponsored by Solvay Specialty Polymers, is guaranteed to evoke a slightly raised eyebrow. There is something to be surprised, because Matti set out to build an internal combustion engine entirely from plastic.

    The original Polimotor had a number of aluminum components in its design, but an increasing number of parts in modern engines are being replaced with polymer counterparts. In particular, nylon components are increasingly being used. In the same direction, but with even greater enthusiasm, the Holtzberg project is also going.

    Polyetheretherketone (or "PEEK") was used to print the piping and manifold, which has a fairly high chemical resistance to automotive fuels and can withstand continuous heating up to 240°C. The manifold is expected to warm up to 150°C near the valves, which is well within the scope of the design.

    Overall, seven plastics will be used in the project, including PEEK (KetaSpire), polyphthalamide (Amodel), polyaryletherketone (AvaSpire), polyamide-imide (Torlon), polyphenylene sulfide (Ryton), polyphenylsulfone (Radel), and Techron fluoroelastomers . Most of these materials are already actively used in the automotive industry.

    The estimated weight of the finished 3D printed plastic motor is about 63-67kg, which is about 40kg lighter than metal versions of the same power. For comparison, the original Polimotor, which was installed on Ford Pinto cars in the bearded 70s and 80s, weighed about 70kg against 188kg "cast iron" analogues of that time. The second version of the first generation engine had almost nothing in common with its predecessor (except for the "plastic" concept), weighed 76kg and was used in racing cars. The Polimotor Lola T616 HU04 was used to race in the American IMSA league and even managed to make it to the podium, taking third place in the Road America 500 19 round.85 years old. Like this outstanding variant, the second generation Polimotor is intended for use in racing cars, but it is worth believing that if the project is successful, there will be those who want to introduce the novelty into mass production.

    Orbital 3D printers join the ranks

    The space race for 3D printing has taken a new turn. After completing the first tests of the American Made in Space 3D printer, the European Space Agency decided to make its contribution.

    A printer called POP3D ("Portable Onboard Printer 3D" or "Portable Onboard 3D Printer") was developed by Altran Italia in collaboration with Thales Alenia Space and the Italian Institute of Technology. What exactly the Italians are going to print in orbit is not difficult to guess. According to project director Constantino Volpe, the project is aimed at the orbital production of spare parts such as mounts, pipes, computer parts, and so on and so forth. But we know what they are really up to.

    In essence, the new device is a high-quality FDM printer, which differs little in terms of performance characteristics from its terrestrial analogues. The length of the side of the cubic unit is 30 cm with a total mass of the device in the region of 5 kg. By the way, the device was delivered into orbit by a private Cygnus truck, developed by the same Thales Alenia Space, and the United Launch Alliance Atlas V 401 launch vehicle was used to put it into orbit, which is an unlikely, but quite real alliance between corporations competing in the military-industrial complex Boeing and Lockheed Martin.     Titanium powders - a lot and cheap

    The main deterrent in the spread of metal 3D printing by laser sintering (SLS) and electron beam melting (EBM) is not so much the high cost of technology, because the latter quickly pay off, but the high cost and lack of consumables. Titanium is rightfully considered the most cherished, having high strength, light weight, resistance to corrosion, and even biocompatibility, which makes it an excellent candidate for the manufacture of prostheses and implants. But for all its advantages, titanium presents a lot of technological difficulties, requiring operation in a neutral environment and reaching high costs due to the difficulty in grinding to a fine powder suitable for use in sintering plants.

    The good news is that the US government-funded Ames laboratory has developed a new method for producing titanium powders that can dramatically reduce their cost. More specifically, the "laboratory" is a research institute at the University of Iowa.

    Presumably, the production and sale of new materials will be carried out by the company Praxair, which is directly related to the project. The new atomization technology is based on the research of Joel Ricken and Andy Heidloff, who were part of the research team led by Iver Anderson. Previously, Joel and Andy founded Iowa Powder Atomization Technologies, which offered the lab's patented designs to the commercial market. Over time, their enterprise was bought out by Praxair, which, most likely, will become the intellectual heir. Be that as it may, the reduction in the cost of titanium powders should be a serious incentive to spread laser sintering technologies and reduce the cost of 3D printed implants. Recall that Praxair announced its intention to create a specialized line for the production of titanium powders back in August this year.

    This three heart gear design comes from Thingiverse manufacturer, Emmett, an aerospace engineer working for Google. This design has been voted over 11,000 times! Moving gears are a great way to tell your valentine how much you're a match for each other. Ouch. And if you've been waiting until the last minute, check out this redesigned print takes less city time. He recommends using ABS filament, but also gives some advice for those using PLA.

    4. I love you box

    I love you in a box! Wait, it didn't come right away. Creator Natalie Chismond, aka 3DPrintBunny has put together a great Valentine's Day gift in a box. You can download designs from MyMiniFactory and enjoy 3D printed Valentine's Day.

    5. Heart-Shaped Box

    When Kurt Cobain sang, "I was locked in your heart-shaped box for weeks," he might have meant it. Heart box design for Valentine's Day from the manufacturer Devmeiser! If you prefer the design to run through the entire lid, check out this alternative version from the Prus website.

    6. Mayan Lotus Pendant

    Jewelry is a popular Valentine's Day gift and this Mayan Lotus Pendant, available on Thingiverse, fits the bill. Designer Cesar Rodriguez recommends using PLA filament to print this design, and you can switch filaments halfway through to create a two-tone version.
