Surprisingly great detail

Wasn't sure about these as some 3D prints can come out pretty bad and at smaller scales print lines tend to take over. Took a chance thinking they might be fun to paint. NO print issues with these. They're surprising smooth & had very little post print cleanup to do. The details are great and the story they tell is kinda fun. I'll probably sneak them into a post apocalyptic diorama at some point...perhaps a book nook diorama in between some of my zombie novels!!

Visualization (visual prototyping)

3D printing solves a whole class of professional tasks that require an additive construction device to be able to create complex geometric objects that visually imitate a future product or object.

Planning of functional prototyping by 3D printing methods in industrial design and architectural modeling.

Industrial design tasks are solved by AM (additive building) devices, which allow printing full-color models. The goal is to present to the focus group a model that imitates the future device or part as closely as possible in order to accept or reject the design design. Pioneers in this area are American manufacturers 3D Systems and Stratasys. Many manufacturers are trying to fill this niche - HP and the Japanese Mimaki campaign have been added to the key players in this segment. The main technology remains the jet application of the binder. However, attempts have been made to create low-cost FDM 3D printers that can mix different colors of filament in an extruder.

01| Full-color building model made on a Mimaki 3D printer

Going close to focus group visualization are architectural modeling tasks for presentations of new building designs before design approval and / or entire neighborhoods before the development plan is accepted. As practice shows, a full-color printer is not required, since most of the design and installation is done separately. The accuracy of the transfer of the terrain is important, which is practically impossible without additive construction. It is gratifying to note that Russia is not lagging behind in this matter - a number of large developers and architectural departments are already actively using 3D printing.

“Scale models are critical for architects. Traditional methods are expensive, take several months, and errors only delay the process.”

Marco Matti Christofri, product designer, BigRep GmbH

Geometric prototyping

A challenge that additive construction has successfully solved since its invention is the simulation of shape and geometry future object. The goals can be different - from "testing for assembly" to ergonomic testing of furniture. The main thing is the accuracy of transferring sizes and shapes and, of course, the possibility of manufacturing a life-size prototype. A large prototype can be assembled, glued together from pieces, etc. But this leads to a loss of dimensional accuracy, which is highly undesirable in this application of 3D printing. If the future product will be assembled from component parts, then it is from such parts that a prototype should be printed in size and shape to check for assembly.

The stereolithography technology provides maximum accuracy of geometrical reproduction, because it is not associated with heat shrinkage of the material or application. Professional SLA printers such as UnionTech are built for precise geometric prototyping. At the same time, the strength and durability of finished parts does not play a decisive role - it is enough to assemble the part once to approve its project.

03| Complex housing with footprints printed on UnionTech 9 equipment0006

Ergonomic testing is performed for field testing of consumer products, furniture, hand tools and tools. In this case, it is very important to be able to print life-size prototypes. For example, BigRep has been actively collaborating with Deutsche Bahn, a German railway operator, on a project to develop new, state-of-the-art seats for high-speed passenger trains. Several headrests of different shapes were printed to choose the most ergonomic, but at the same time in a futuristic design of the overall style of interior design of the cars.

Printing fully functional prototypes

This type of prototyping is the most difficult. It is important to repeat not just the exact shape or appearance of the future part, but also to provide the printed object with the functional properties of the future part or product. This is especially important for future prototypes, which are difficult and time-consuming to manufacture in a single copy using traditional manufacturing technologies. For this type of additive construction, the high cost of one construction is not terrible, since this will more than pay off by eliminating errors in mass production. And, surprisingly, not only SLM printing with metal powders or surfacing is suitable for these purposes, but also FDM printing with high-temperature materials. An example is the creation of a prototype of a fire truck engine cooling system manifold made of high-temperature PEEK plastic for bench testing.

05| Creation of a life-size 3D model of a fire engine manifold using a 3D printer

Project: Creation of a life-size 3D model of a fire truck manifold using a 3D printer.

Purpose: 1:1 Prototype Verification - 3D printing technology allows each new design idea to be physically tested on a virtual model.

Company: Bocar is a manufacturer of fire trucks with original running gear, producing more than 100 vehicles annually.

Importantly, many additive manufacturing technologies that are capable of using engineered materials can be used to test functional prototypes: FDM, MJP, SLS, SLM, and others.

The most important factors to consider when planning functional 3D printing prototyping are:

  1. Accuracy of additive construction - the resulting part or product must fit within the tolerance standards for the dimensions of future mass production.
  2. Characteristics of the material of construction - the applied engineering material should not be inferior in strength characteristics, and in some cases exceed the material planned for mass production.
  3. The weight of the received part must match the prototyping task - the part may be lighter or equal in weight to the future serial product.
  4. In some cases, additional characteristics such as transparency (light transmission), electrical insulating properties, etc. must be taken into account.

Due to the above factors, SLM (Selective Metal Powder Fusion) technology is most often used for functional prototyping of metal parts. As it allows to bring the prototype as close as possible in terms of properties to the finished product, and for prototyping plastic parts - SLS technology (selective laser sintering).

Three-dimensional maps of Russia and other countries of the world.

3D Mapper

FAQ. Frequently Asked Questions

Relief cards... What is it?

Relief maps - a relatively new type of representation of the earth's surface, combining the information content of traditional maps and the visibility of layouts. The relief map is based on a digital elevation model obtained by processing satellite imagery and cartographic data. To improve visual perception, the vertical scale on relief maps is increased several times depending on the scale of the map and the terrain.

How are cards made? What technology is better to choose?

A necessary step in making a map is the formation of a computer relief model. Further, depending on the purpose of the card, its size and the planned circulation, the manufacturing technology is selected. The three main technologies are shown in the table below.

Technology Process description Typical application Price formation Duplication
3D printing A 3D printing job is generated from the terrain model and texture. Printing is done in color with gypsum-like plastic. The advantage of the technology is that the output of the computer model is carried out immediately for printing, which ensures the efficiency and exact correspondence of the model. 3D printer has limitations on the size of the print chamber (as a rule, horizontally - no more than 50x50 cm).
Such cards are used as table souvenirs.
The cost of the product is determined by the cost of developing a computer model and the cost of printing the product. Optimal in the manufacture of single copies of small-sized cards (30x30 cm) with the application of customer's objects Each subsequent copy is created at the cost of 3D printing.
Milling A computer model is used to form a landscape with a 3D router made of MDF or other dense material. The resulting relief is used as a basis for layouts, pasted over with texture films, flock materials, etc. It is easy to attach additional elements to the product - models of buildings, infrastructure, etc. The product turns out to be quite heavy, the layout is not applicable for applying photorealistic textures.
This option is used as the basis for creating desktop and floor layouts.
The cost of the product consists of the cost of developing a computer model, the cost of milling and the cost of finalizing the product (applying textures and elements). Suitable mainly for desktop layouts (1x1 m and more) Each subsequent copy costs the cost of milling and the cost of finalizing the product
Vacuum formed A computer model is used to form a landscape with a 3D router made of MDF or other dense material. The resulting relief is used as a matrix for forming a sheet material with a printed map texture. The product is lightweight, suitable for wall mounting, any texture can be applied (photographs, topographic maps, physical and political maps) The cost of the product consists of the cost of developing a computer model, the cost of milling, the cost of printing the texture and molding the product. The main labor costs are associated with the combination of relief and texture. Suitable for making wall cards of any size. Replication costs the price of molding and texture application, which is no more than 15% of the cost of the first copy of the product. One form allows you to make several hundred copies.

Which technology is cheaper?

It all depends on your needs. For example, a 50x50 cm card in a single copy is more profitable to print on a 3D printer, and if you need a print run or card sizes greater than 1 m 2 , then molding is definitely more profitable - you can save an order of magnitude in price.

In the calculator on the main page, you can calculate the estimated cost of making cards by molding, as well as estimate the cost of preparing a computer model (if you uncheck "Make" - only the cost of preparing the model is considered). You can also evaluate the impact of circulation on the unit cost of the product.

Can I order a map with my own designations - roads, objects, inscriptions, etc.?

Needed! The main advantage of custom-made products is that you will receive a unique product that fully meets your needs.

What appearance options are available?

Almost any. We offer in the calculator for example the most popular options - a satellite image and a topographic map. The texture can be anything - a physical or political map, a height map, etc.
For maps of large areas (countries and continents as a whole, a federal district, a large region, etc.), the projection significantly affects the appearance. The most popular in our country are the Mercator projection (as on Google maps) and conical projection (as on mass maps of the USSR and Russia)

What are projections? What is the difference?

Our planet is not flat. In order to represent its surface on a plane, various methods of scanning - projections are used. Each projection introduces size distortions relative to the real ones.
