Oakley is the history of the American brand. Who founded Oakley, the brand's 2020 collection.

Oakley Sunglasses

The brand's current collections offer innovative materials and state-of-the-art technology. Casual pieces include the iconic Frogskins design, Holbrook's classic rectangular glasses inspired by 1950s and 1960s movie icons, the versatile Gascan and Sylas. The frames are made of nylon O Matter plastic. Lightweight and durable, it can withstand heat and cold. Deadbolt goggles are made from titanium alloy, which is lightweight and flexible.

Along with the everyday line, Oakley traditionally offers sports glasses. The frame is also made of O Matter material, but the design is complemented by functional details. The temples and nosepiece feature overlays of the rubberized Unobtainium material that Jim Jannard started with.

High Visibility Oakley Flight Jacket

Each model has its own design features. So Jawbreaker glasses have the ability to change lenses easily and quickly using Switchlock technology. The design of the Radar EV features no rims at the bottom of the goggles and an increased range of vision due to the higher position of the lenses. The new Flight Jacket goggles for cycling, running and other moving disciplines maximize the upper field of view by eliminating the brow frame. Another addition is the Advancer Bridge, which allows you to reposition the lenses to block out light while opening up airflow to combat fogging and overheating.

Oakley Lenses

HD Polarized lenses filter out 99% of reflected light without haze or optical distortion. The injection molding process produces a single layer part for sharp and clear vision. In addition, both lenses are cropped at the same time to align and center the polarization axis.

Iridium coated lenses are designed for an optimal balance between reflection, transmission and absorption of light, depending on the application. Superheated metal oxides fuse with the lens at the molecular level to create a uniform filter layer that optimizes contrast and minimizes flare.

Prizm lenses are the brand's most popular product and are the result of years of color research. Depending on the technology used, the lenses have a certain light transmission. The most popular types are Prizm Road, which helps cyclists notice subtle changes in road textures, Prizm Trail, which enhances reds and browns in shadows and in bright light, and Prizm Golf, which is designed to improve contrast.

Oakley Ski Goggles

The brand is constantly innovating to produce some of the most recognizable and coveted sports goggles not only for cycling but also for other disciplines, including skiing. Masks designed for snowy trails provide perfect peripheral vision. The cylindrical design allows the goggles to fit snugly around the face.

Stole Sandback - Norwegian snowboarder and athlete Oakley Snowboarding

The LINE SERIES includes the Line Miner and an updated Fall Line goggle optimized for different surfaces. A nod to the first Factory Pilot goggles, the heavily branded strap adjusts easily to fit any head size. The design of the Flight Deck mask was inspired by the visors of fighter pilots' helmets. All models are made of O-Matter combined with a cold-resistant urethane base. The foam layer is responsible for cushioning and softness.

Specially for skiers, Prizm Snow lenses filter out the brightest light. The material used is Plutonite made of polycarbonate. High Definition Optics ® (HDO ® ) has been tested by the American National Institute of Quality Standards. Lens replacement is carried out thanks to Ridgelock technology. All masks are designed to fit perfectly with most helmets.

From sport to fashion

Key aspects of Oakley's success are celebrity endorsements, especially athletes, as well as technical innovations including interchangeable lenses, high quality optics and resistance to damage. Since its inception, the brand has not left the distance and even entered the fashion world, creating joint collections with Vetements, fragment design, Palace Skateboards, size? retailer, A-COLD-WALL * founder Samuel Ross and designer Jeff Staple. In addition to glasses, a line of casual, technological clothing, shoes, backpacks and accessories is produced.

Oakley × Samuel Ross

Samuel Ross is the founder of the A-COLD-WALL* brand, creating full collections for Oakley with clothing and accessories for the second season in a row. He draws inspiration from Oakley's rich heritage of technological innovation. The result is unique pieces at the intersection of avant-garde, haute couture and professional sports.

Oakley × Staple

The name "Jeff Staple" is sure to be recognized by sneakerheads as he is responsible for the Nike SB × Staple Dunk Low "NYC Pigeon" that caused riots at its 2005 launch. As the owner of a design studio, Staple contributes to many products, including Oakley eyewear. Their cooperation began almost 10 years ago, in 2010, and continues to this day.

Oakley × size?

size? is a British retailer that teamed up with Oakley for the SS19 season to create the "Chemical Vision" collection of glasses, t-shirts, shorts, sweatshirts and bucket hats. The inspiration came from the 1960s, when many people in the US started tie-dyeing T-shirts, producing vibrant and psychedelic prints.

Oakley × Vetements

Demna Gvasalia, the founder of Vetements, could not stand aside either. Few benefited from the return of extravagant style 90's more than him. Collaboration with Oakley reworks standard frames with shiny metal spikes. The new models are named SPIKES200 and SPIKES400.

Oakley - iconic sports glasses and the history of the brand

Today, the Oakley brand is perhaps one of the most famous manufacturers of sunglasses and sports equipment. Among his loyal fans are celebrities of the caliber of Michael Jordan and iconic movie characters like Blade and Ethan Hunt. But Oakley's story began with a garage job and a modest $300 capital, and the first product released was not goggles at all, but motorcycle grips.

Understanding how the trajectory of the American brand has changed, and how its founder Jim Janard managed to become a leader in the sports eyewear industry with the help of technology and functionality.

Oakley - history and highlights

History of the Oakley brand

In 1975, professional motocross rider Jim Janard decided to start his own company. The brand got its name in honor of Janard's dog, an English setter named Oakley Ann. Oakley's initial investment was $300, and the brand's first office was Jim's old garage. Janard's first venture was to create handlebar grips for motocross bikes, which he sold directly from the back of his car at motocross competitions. His Oakley Grip grips were a radical departure from what riders are used to: made from Janard's patented Unobtainium material, they were much more comfortable to grip in a gloved hand than other grips. All Oakley temples are now made from the same material.

Oakley then began to expand its range by gradually introducing new products such as license plates, elbow pads, chin guards, and sports goggles designed specifically for motorcyclists and BMX riders. In 1980, Oakley released a goggle model called the O Frame, with the brand's logo on the temple. The couple instantly gained popularity. Janard continued to develop the eyewear line, three years later adding other sports that required increased eye protection, such as skiing and cycling.

Oakley's first Factory Pilot Eyeshade sunglasses, released in 1984, were very sporty and looked more like goggles. But a year later, they were followed by the Japanese-made Oakley Frogskin, which has a much more casual look.

While most cyclists preferred aviator goggles, American cyclist Greg Lemond was the first to wear Eyeshade. He purchased his first pair on his own and then contacted Janard to get some extra lenses. 1986 was a pivotal year for the brand's development: Lemond then became the first American to win the Tour de France. And he did it in Oakley Eyeshade sunglasses. Since then, Oakleys have become an integral part of cycling culture. So by 1987, half of the peloton was wearing Eyeshade glasses.

Greg Lemond and Bernard Hinault at the 1986 Tour de France

Thanks to the brand's attention, Oakley soon began giving away its points to the best in various sports - including the legendary Michael Jordan, who soon became an ardent fan of the brand. Other celebrities often seen wearing Oakley frames were Nike founder Phil Knight, baseball player Kel Ripken, speed skater Bonnie Blair and tennis player Andre Agassi.

Janard took up the development of new models of sunglasses. One of them was the famous Oakley Blade, which featured an interchangeable wraparound lens that fits easily into a minimalist carbon fiber frame. Launched in 1989, the M-Frame goggles have become a favorite among professional cyclists. And fashionistas like George Hincapie preferred the Racing Jacket (he was rumored to have about 1,000 of them).

In 1995, Oakley became a public limited company. Janard kept a 64.8% stake in the brand (at the time, the company's total value was estimated at $820 million). One of Oakley's shareholders was Michael Jordan, who purchased a $2 million stake. Initially, he was supposed to become a consultant to the company, but then he ended up on the board of directors (in 2002, the basketball player left Oakley).

Michael Jordan wearing Oakley Mars

glasses In 2006, Oakley acquired premium optics manufacturer Oliver Peoples Group. And a year later, the world famous Italian company Luxottica, which owns eyewear brands such as Ray-Ban, Prada and Vogue-Eyewear, announced the purchase of Oakley for $2. 1 billion. On the closing day of the transaction, shares of the American brand were withdrawn from trading.

One of the most important events in the history of Oakley, which helped to strengthen the brand's reputation, was the assistance to Chilean miners in 2010. In August of that year, a rockfall in the San Jose mine resulted in workers at 69days were buried underground. In preparation for the rescue operation, one of the Chilean journalists offered to seek help from the Oakley brand. The miners' eyes, accustomed to the dark, could not be immediately exposed to such a bright light, and therefore, to protect them, the company provided 35 pairs of Oakley Radar with a special coating (and the "O" logo on the temple). According to experts, such an advertising campaign cost the brand 6300 dollars, in return for providing advertising time, in monetary terms equal to 41 million dollars.

Oakley is now one of the largest manufacturers of sunglasses and sports eyewear in the world. The brand provides law enforcement agencies in the United States with its glasses, and also sponsors members of the American Olympic team. In 2014, in honor of the 30th anniversary of its sports eyewear brand, the company launched the Heritage Collection line, which includes the brand's iconic models, including the Eyeshade, Frogskin and Razor Blade.

Oakley Technologies

Most of Oakley's technological developments are created with the participation of athletes and through multiple tests, including extreme conditions. For example, two-stage industrial tests are used to test the wear and impact resistance of lenses. First, the glasses are shot with a metal ball at high speed, and then with a pointed steel lance weighing 0.5 kg. If the lens cracks, breaks or flies off, then it does not pass the test and is sent for revision.

    • Oakley Plutonite
    • Oakley Polarized
    • Oakley Iridium
    • Oakley Switchlock
    • Oakley Prizm

Oakley Plutonite

Plutonite UV protection

All Oakley spherical lenses are made from the patented Plutonite material. This is a proprietary polymer based on carbon fiber, which produces clear, correct and flexible lenses. Another brand technology is UV protection, which is also achieved thanks to Plutonite. Unlike other glasses, Oakley pairs don't just reduce UV exposure, they block it out completely.

Oakley Polarized

While most lens manufacturers use multiple layers and filter film to create lenses, Oakley embeds the polarizer into the polymer at the molecular level, molding lenses without glue or press. This results in crystal clear Oakley Polarized (also called HDPolarized) lenses. And the High Definition Optics (HDO) technology used in Oakley glasses ensures the absence of image refraction, so that a person sees everything through the lens the same as without it, which relieves unnecessary eye strain.

Oakley Iridium

Oakley Iridium Technology

The optional Oakley Iridium coating makes the lens more comfortable in certain weather conditions. The degree of saturation and the composition of the layer of hot metal oxides regulate the penetration of light from 9 to 92%. The various shades of the coating are designed not only for an attractive appearance, but also for functional purposes - to reduce glare and regulate the absorption and transmission of light.

Oakley Switchlock

Oakley SwitchLock Lens Replacement Technology

Thanks to Oakley Switchlock technology, the frame does not need to be disassembled to change lenses. The patented technology allows you to quickly adapt to changing light conditions, easily switching from one interchangeable lens to another.

Oakley Prizm

How Oakley Prism

Lenses Work The brand's latest development, Oakley Prizm lenses, provide optimal imaging in certain lighting conditions. Through more than 10 years of research into color reproduction, the brand has developed technical solutions that enhance and attenuate the color spectrum for improved detail, clarity and maximum eye comfort. Various Prizm lenses are designed with a specific sport in mind and its characteristics.

Iconic Oakley Models

Today, Oakley manufactures a range of products from accessories to apparel and footwear. But their main focus, of course, remains sports and sunglasses.

    • Oakley Eye Jacket
    • Oakley M Frame
    • Oakley Romeo
    • Oakley OverTheTop
    • Oakley Mars

Oakley Eye Jacket

The Eye Jacket silhouette was first released in 1994, but it still looks like it came from the future. This is partly due to the fact that its development fell on the era of retrofuturism, partly because these glasses were one of the first products produced using 3D printing.

According to legend, Jim Janard became the second buyer of a 3D printer in history in the world (NASA bought the first machine). When designing the Jacket Eye, Oakley designers relied on computer-aided design for the first time. They completely abandoned straight lines, coming to organic geometric forms. Before the Eye Jacket took on its final form, the team made about 150 prototypes. The design was also affected by the fact that at that time the brand focused exclusively on professional goggles, not paying attention to the everyday optics segment.

Michael Jordan in the Oakley Eye Jacket ad campaign

Michael Jordan starred in the advertising campaign of the model, and this, combined with an unusual design, allowed the glasses to become one of the most popular in the brand's assortment. They have advanced the optical industry not only in terms of technology but also style.

The original model from 1994 is now only found in the resale market, but in 2019 Oakley released a Redux version of the Eye Jacket with updated lenses and Prizm technology.

Oakley M Frame

Originally launched in 1989 under the name Mumbo, the M Frame has long established itself as a classic from the brand. Although the shape of the frame has remained more or less intact since the original release, overall the glasses have undergone many changes. Due to legal friction with the American clothing brand Mambo, the glasses were renamed M Frame. Over time, the color range of frames has expanded, and new forms of lenses have also appeared.

M Frame frames offer the ability to easily change lenses, instantly adapting to any lighting conditions. There are two versions of the frames of the model (standard and more flexible, one-piece Pro M Frame), as well as five types of lenses that fit them. Following the M Frame, the brand released the M2 Frame and M2 XL with enlarged lenses.

Will Smith wears Oakley M Frame glasses in Bad Boys 2

Not only sports legends like Tony Gwynn, Lance Armstrong and Natasha Badmann wear this model, but also American SWAT squads. The film S.W.A.T.: City of Angels SWAT also reflects this: Samuel L. Jackson as Sergeant Dan "Hondo" Harrelson wears an Oakley M Frame Hybrid S with VR28 lenses. And the other members of the squad (played by Colin Farrell, Michelle Rodriguez and LL Cool J) appear in a transparent M Frame version. In cinematography, the model can also be seen on Will Smith in the Bad Boys series and on Matt Damon in Don't Take Alive.

Oakley Romeo

Originally known as the Oscar, Oakley Romeo eyewear was first introduced to the world in 1996 at the company's then-under construction headquarters in Foothill Ranch, California. The futuristic sunglasses were the first hypoallergenic 3D printed metal frames. According to legend, the Romeo took 3 weeks to produce, over 27 different machines, 425,000 watts of electricity at 1980 degrees, and 75 people were involved in their creation. Advertised by the brand as a "revolutionary application of the metallurgical process and a breakthrough in structural physics", the glasses were truly a discovery for the world: the small mass did not prevent the model from possessing incredible strength. To prove the Romeo's longevity, the company even ran over a couple with a tank.

Despite the fact that the model was supposed to be released in November 1996, the glasses appeared on sale in February 1997. And even those deadlines were only met because Janard promised he'd forfeit his $1 million bonus if Oakley Romeos didn't come out "in the second month of the year." On the last day of February, the brand sent one pair to each of its suppliers.

Tom Cruise wearing Oakley Romeo glasses in Mission: Impossible 2

The model had its flaws. The metal frame created stress points on the glass, causing the lenses to break. Some criticized that the glasses were too big for the average head, others that they were too heavy to wear for long periods of time. Despite these shortcomings, at 19In 98, Romeo became one of the brand's best-selling eyewear.

In addition, the silhouette's design caught the attention of Hollywood. One of Oakley Romeo's most famous screen appearances is Mission: Impossible 2. Other films featuring the pair include Blade 2, Spider-Man (2002) and The Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day.

Oakley OverTheTop

In November 2000, Oakley released an unusual model under the aptly named OverTheTop (which can be translated as "bust" or as something "eccentric").

Instead of temples, the design used a one-piece construction that curved around the top of the skull. Despite the low weight, the goggles held firmly on the head even during the most extreme races. With this design, the brand turned professional goggles into a kind of headgear, which was to be the first generation of optics for a new era. However, the industry did not move in this direction, and 20 years after the release of OverTheTop, they still remain a bold and completely atypical silhouette.

Flavor Flav wears Oakley OverTheTop glasses

One of OverTheTop's fans is rapper Flavor Flav, who often completes his looks (mostly recognizable thanks to the watch hanging around his neck) on the red carpet with bright glasses. The extravagant couple also appeared in Spy Kids 3: Game Over, Spider-Man (2002) and Blade 2.

Oakley Mars

In 1997 Oakley Mars was released from the X-Metal collection. These glasses were designed specifically for the needs of Michael Jordan, who at that time was on the company's board of directors. The Mars design was the first to use unique loops, later used in other silhouettes. The frame was made of titanium, one of the most difficult metals to work with. A year later, a leather version with large stitches on the frame was released - Oakley Mars Leather Frame. Thanks to its design and association with a famous athlete (Jordan actively advertised glasses), the model became one of the most sought-after releases in the brand's range.

Brad Pitt wearing Oakley Mars glasses in Fight Club

The leather frame became even more popular due to the limited release: pairs were only sold for a year. It is in the leather version of Oakley Mars that Brad Pitt in the movie Fight Club and Gary Sinise in the movie The Alien appear on the screen.

Oakley Collaborations

    • Oakley x Vetements
    • Oakley x Palace
    • Oakley x Kith
    • Oakley x Samuel Ross

Oakley x Vetements

In the Spring/Summer 2019 season, Demna Gvasalia presented the Vetements collaboration with Oakley at Paris Fashion Week. The collaboration created two futuristic versions of classic frames from the 90s. Models 200 and 400 are available in multiple lens tints ranging from red and yellow to blue, neon green and black.

100% plastic iridescent gradient glasses with metal spikes. The 200 version uses three short spikes on the left and right sides of the lenses, while the 400 model has spikes covering the entire lower part of the goggle frame. The Oakley branding is present on the lenses themselves and on the temple in the form of an "O" logo. The Vetements logo is laser-etched onto the bridge of both models.

Oakley x Palace

For the first time, Oakley partnered with skate brand Palace for the SS 2018 season. The brands collaborated on M Frame sunglasses with mirrored orange lenses and a retro-inspired nylon "Thermonuclear Protection" tracksuit.

Oakley x Palace Eye Jacket Redux

Next season (FW 2018), the brands teamed up again for the release of Oakley Eye Jacket collaboration pairs. The pairs are available in gray and black with mirrored blue or yellow lenses. The Palace branding runs along the bridge of the nose.

Oakley's next project was the 2019 Palace SS capsule collection, celebrating the brand's flagship launch in Los Angeles. Inspired by this sunny city, the brands have created a range of zip-up T-shirts and wetsuits with gradient panels. Palace chose the Eye Jacket once again, this time in a shimmering yellow to pink colorway.

Oakley x Kith

In March 2018, Ronnie Feig released the Utah collaboration with five labels, including Oakley. In honor of the release of the collection, the brand made a video "The Voyager", dedicated to a traveler wandering through unfamiliar territory. Oakley created the Razor Blade glasses for Kith, featuring clear frames and state-of-the-art Prizm technology.

Another brand collaboration was the FW 2018 season. Many brands again participated in the creation of the Aspen collection, including Oakley. The winter product range was perfect for snowboarding. Oakley's contributions include the Razor Blade with Prizm lenses, Flight Deck goggles and MOD5 chrome helmet.

At the end of 2019, Kith introduced the "Jackson" collection, inspired by the Jackson Hole ski resort. The release, "inspired by the elegant and extreme terrain", combined functionality and attractive appearance. Together with Oakley, Feig has released matte black MOD5 helmets with gradient accents. The collection also includes two colorways of the Line Miner face shield with co-branding on the strap and the iconic Frogskin silhouette with iridescent mirror lenses and Prizm technology.

Oakley x Samuel Ross

A-COLD-WALL* founder Samuel Ross has also featured several collaborations with Oakley. The debut collection, Oakley by Samuel Ross Season 1, released in September 2018, explored the sunglasses brand's history of technology and innovation. The experimental collection includes outerwear with modular panels, industrial metal details and reflective materials. Oversized raincoats, futuristic T-shirts, transparent goggles and shoulder bags are the highlights.

In the spring of 2019, the collaborators released their second joint collection. Ross has revisited the Oakley sportswear archives with reimagined windbreakers, convertible pants, T-shirts and long sleeves with zip pockets, backpacks and caps. The signature Oakley Gascan and M2 models are updated with futuristic colored lenses to match the collection's contemporary style.

Oakley by Samuel Ross Season 3

In the third season, the collaboration between Samuel Ross and Oakley refocused on utility. The new clothing and accessories combine durable synthetic materials and waterproof technology. The collection includes elongated jackets, backpacks that can also be worn as travel bags, sports long sleeves, water-resistant bucket hats and, of course, innovative eyewear.

Now, in an age where the '90s fathers are the fashion icons, it's no surprise that Oakley glasses are back in style.
