3D body scanning applications
Fitness and personal health
Fitness body scanners
Body scanners can be used in fitness clubs, gyms, and healthcare facilities. Fitness body scanners allow you to track the evolution of a person’s body through various 3D measurements such as body shape and posture.
Visualizing these evolutions on a 3D avatar is a strong motivational boost that can help increase gym members’ engagement and improve patient recovery processes.
Home body scanners
These 3D body scanners are consumer appliances made to monitor personal health and body shape as well as posture evolution, among other data points. Homebody scanners usually have a 360° rotating platform on which the user stands.
These 3D body scanners typically work with a smartphone app acting as a personal trainer, so users can easily track all their data and reach their fitness goals.
Fashion and apparel: made-to-measure clothing
The fashion and apparel industry was among the first to embrace 3D body scanning for several applications:

Healthcare
Healthcare and medical sectors are filled with opportunities for 3D body scanning. From monitoring body shape and posture during pregnancy to making custom 3D printed prosthetics and more, body scanners are increasingly used for use in the medical field.
Body scanning can also be used to accurately monitor skin recovery in the case of burns or to detect skin diseases at an early stage, thanks to specific 3D imaging systems.
How do 3D body scanners work?
To obtain a full body scan, the person holds a pose for a few seconds, which is the time it takes for the 3D scanner to capture images from all angles. The 3D software then reconstructs the final 3D model of the body by “stitching” all of the images together, generating a highly detailed 3D model. Models can have colors and textures depending on the type of body scanner that’s used.
During the 3D capture process, the subject can either stand on a rotating turntable facing a fixed 3D body scanner, or stand still while the sensors located all around the body scanning booth capture images from all angles.
Closed 3D body scanning booth (or body scanning cabin)
A body scanning booth is a closed cabin that is rigged with cameras or 3D scanners. These full-body 3D scanners look a bit like regular fitting rooms.
Full body scanner with rotating platform or turntable
To use these body scanners, the person stands on a rotating table facing a 3D body scanner, typically a vertical unit. During the scanning process, the turntable rotates 360°, allowing the subject to be captured from all angles. The 3D model is generated once the full rotation is complete.

Shapify Booth 3D body scanner: How it works
The core of the Shapify technology is the booth’s four wide-view high-resolution 3D scanners and automatic post-processing software. The scanners make a full circle around a person to capture the shape of their body from all angles. Getting precise measurements of the body makes it possible to replicate even the smallest details from the person’s posture to the creases in their clothes.
The scans captured in the booth are then automatically aligned, fused and turned into a watertight digital 3D replica of the person, ready for 3D printing. The full-color 3D portrait, or shapie, can be used in a variety of applications, from creating a timeless keepsake – a 3D printed figurine, to collecting body measurement data, opening up new opportunities for technological advances in fields such as medicine, dietology and fashion.
Got a question about Artec Shapify Booth?
How many people can Artec Shapify Booth scan in an hour?
Scanning a person, or a couple, in the Shapify Booth takes just 12 seconds, and within 1-2 minutes the next person can be scanned. This means that in an hour, Artec Shapify can scan about 20-25 people. If the person scanned wants to see the preview of their model first, the process will take a little longer (around 5 minutes for preview) and as a result, you can scan up to 10 people in an hour.
This option is great when you need to scan a large number of people for research purposes, but in other cases, we recommend checking out the Artec Leo as a solution for scanning people.
How accurate is the 3D body scanner?
Artec Shapify Booth captures 3D models with up to 400K polygons.
Which scanner should I choose for scanning people: Artec Leo or Artec Shapify booth?
The answer to this question depends on how often and how many people you need to scan. If you need to scan a few hundred people in one day for an event or for research, the Artec Shapify booth will be the best option. If you need a scanner to scan a few dozen people or less, then Artec Leo is the preferred option.

scopes and overview of models / Sudo Null IT News
3D laser scanning - creating a digital model of a physical body using a laser beam. The technology is non-contact, works at close and long distances, eliminates damage to objects during scanning. The principle of operation of 3D laser scanners: a directed laser beam is reflected from the surface of an object, forming a cloud of points. Each point has its own coordinates in space. The software identifies them and creates a finished 3D digital model based on this data. nine0003
From the overview you will find out where laser scanning is used and what equipment is used to solve related problems.
Purpose of laser scanners
Source: newequipment.com
Compared to traditional measurement methods, laser scanners have an important advantage - they can digitize objects with complex surfaces and work in hard-to-reach places for humans. The main areas of application of devices are input and output quality control in production, inspection of working devices in order to prevent and eliminate defects, reverse engineering and other areas. nine0003
Construction, renovation and renovation of objects
Source: ellisdon.com
During the preparation of the building design, it is necessary to evaluate the features of the site and the cost of the forthcoming works. With the help of 3D laser scanners, a landscape model is created, on the basis of which further work is carried out. During the construction process, intermediate control of the geometry of future buildings is required: walls, corners, openings, etc. Laser scanning copes with this task more accurately and faster than conventional measuring technologies. nine0003
The basis for an exterior or interior renovation is often an accurate digital model, on the basis of which changes and additions to the current interior or exterior are planned. Laser scanners are also indispensable in this area.
Road networks and transport
Source: autodesk.com
Laser scanning is becoming an integral part of the planning and creation of urban and suburban road networks, tunnels, pedestrian sections, railways, ports. The technology is used to assess the current state of coatings, plan and estimate the cost of repairs, to obtain models of perennial structures, such as bridges. The equipment is involved in the design, manufacture, repair and tuning of cars, air transport and ships. nine0003
Public utilities
Source: 3dscanner.es
With the help of 3D laser scanners, it became possible to quickly digitize and document engineering communications. Scanning significantly saves time during maintenance and reconstruction. The devices work remotely, minimizing the risks of people when working in adverse conditions and in hard-to-reach areas.
Oilfield installations
Source: ramboll.com
Oil production complexes located in the water require constant monitoring of work processes. Objects are regularly exposed to adverse and changeable environmental influences: winds of different strengths and directions, currents, temperature changes, etc. 3D laser scanning is becoming an integral part of the inspection of oil production installations. The equipment allows you to quickly identify and fix deformations and other damage, control wear, calculate the timing of scheduled maintenance, and prevent accidents. nine0003
Forensic examination
Source: faro.com
Photographs and manual measurements in investigative processes and forensic examinations are being replaced by 3D laser scanning. The devices create three-dimensional models of scenes of incidents with accurate fixation of the location of objects and the distances between them. The data is used in the process of pre-trial and litigation.
Other applications
Source: news.microsoft.com
3D laser scanners facilitate and optimize workflows in the following areas:
- In cartography and geodesy - when creating terrain plans, maps, geographic information systems (GIS).
- In archeology - in the restoration and preservation of ancient artifacts.
- In paleontology, to create missing parts of excavated skeletons.
- In medicine, including plastic surgery and dentistry. nine0080
- Branches
- Scanning step by step
- 3D model examples
- Hardware and software
- Where to buy?
- Fast and accurate acquisition of individual body images in color, taking into account all the features of the figure and texture of clothing
- Efficiently create 3D models of a full-length human or a separate body part for implants in medicine, fashion design, entertainment, fashion, and 3D printing of souvenirs and advertising layouts
- Refinement of the 3D model in the embedded software, easy removal / addition of individual elements for further printing of the object
- creation of individual prostheses, orthoses, surgical templates, implants
- visualization and modeling of the result of transplantation, prosthetics and plastic surgery
- making figurines of real people for 3D printing nine0072 manufacture of personalized accessories and jewelery
- digitization of mini-copies of real objects, sculptures, busts
- creation of digital models of real people for computer games and other programs
- 3D clothing modeling, sizing improvement
- using 3D models for trying on clothes on sites
- Scan each body part once, especially when scanning a human face. If you scan the face several times in a row, the program will recreate the model as something in between all the received 3D scans. As a result, you will get an option that is completely different from the original face of the person being scanned.
- In the process of work, the person being scanned must absolutely not move - otherwise any movement, whether it be tilting, turning the head or stepping from foot to foot, can lead to image deformation. It is advisable to freeze in one position for a while and remain motionless until the very end of the procedure. nine0073
- If you want to create a figurine using 3D scanning, then you do not need to use additional light. To get a high-quality 3D figurine, LED flashes are enough.
- When using a turntable, its speed must be made as slow as possible. Thus, a 3D scan of a person will be much more accurate, and difficult places such as palms or ears will be much easier to scan. nine0293
-
Optical:
Optical 3D scanning technology uses a lamp flash designed to take measurements with the highest accuracy. Projection distortions of the object are recorded by the scanner's video cameras, thereby allowing to determine the shape and dimensions of the scanned object, and then transferred to a specialized PC program for further processing. nine0003
Optical 3D scanners are fast, allowing you to scan people even in motion and in full growth.
Scanning a person with a 3D scanner using this technology takes from two minutes when using a special cell and up to 20 minutes when using a handheld scanner.
nine0002 Most optical handheld devices are capable of color scanning and texture reproduction of the original model and various details, including jewelry and clothing. -
Laser:
Traditional laser scanners, as a rule, are developed for the tasks of metrological measurements, and therefore require special reflective marks to be fixed on or near the object, the position of which is read by the device for precise positioning.

Reduce construction costs and time with FARO Focus
Source: autodesk.com
US construction company Gilbane invested $60,000 in a FARO Focus-S 350 laser scanner, software, and employee training. At first glance, the amount seems too large for a small-scale firm. But, after the calculations, the company's management came to the conclusion that the investment will pay off in the shortest possible time. nine0003
According to Gilbane's director of 3D design, John Tocci Jr., after introducing the expensive new technology, the company began to use the equipment even in areas where it was not originally planned. The specialists managed to save $30,000 for one hour of Focus-S 350 and Autodesk Revit software.

Case “Modernization of the building of the University of Miami”
Source: elevar. com
At the time of the start of work, the architects had drawings made 85 years ago, and a little more than 4.5 thousand square meters of the old building. Using a 3D laser scanner, Gilbane digitized the training areas in one day. Modernization of load-bearing structures, as well as the main utility systems: plumbing, electrical and ventilation, was based on data obtained from scanning. nine0003
Quality Inspection with ScanTech
Source: 3d-scantech.com
The advantage of metal stamping over forging and casting is the lower weight and thickness of the resulting parts. The use of molds gives high accuracy and maximum compliance of the obtained parts with the specified characteristics, but does not completely exclude deviations and deformations. Which, in turn, can lead to difficulties in assembling finished products and reducing product quality. Therefore, constant quality inspection is a necessary part of production. nine0003
Having understood the problems of the manufacturer, ScanTech experts proposed to check the quality of stamped parts using the PRINCE laser scanner. The ability to switch blue and red laser modes allowed the device to combine the functionality of traditional portable and metrological 3D scanners. The mode of operation with an active beam of a red laser provides fast digitization of objects. In the case of increased requirements for accuracy and detail, turn on the blue laser beam mode. nine0003

The process of scanning a person with a 3D scanner
If you need to scan a person, you can order a scan of any part of the body from us at a bargain price.
The process of 3D scanning and modeling in software generally takes from 10 minutes to several hours.
The obtained data of 3D scanning of the human body is processed in specialized software: errors are corrected, problem areas are eliminated. The finished 3D model with an accurate texture and a clear rendering of the smallest details, if necessary, is sent for 3D printing. At the same time, a high-precision copy of a person can be obtained on a 3D printer, which in the future can become a memorable gift or souvenir. It is possible to scan with the transfer of the color of the object. nine0003
Also, the finished model can be used to create individual products that are ideally suited to the human figure.
It should be mentioned that 3D human scanning is completely safe, painless and does not harm the human body.
