Who invented strange patterns on Soviet carpets and what do they really mean?
Which of us didn't fall asleep as a child, staring with sleepy eyes at the carpet on the wall, on which there were strange patterns? And in these patterns one could always see whole pictures: animals, people, faces.
Probably, in every Soviet house there was such a carpet, and every Soviet child studied its ornament.
I always wondered who came up with these drawings, what do they really mean?
Let's see.
When I was looking for information about the production of carpets, I came across a catalog, according to which in the USSR it was possible to order a real carpet in one of the republics, and even from abroad!
This catalog is issued by Vneshposyltorg. It was possible to order goods from this organization for checks that were paid to specialists working abroad. So, in this catalog there is a rather large selection of ornaments with a name, and an indication of the country of origin, of course.
For example, from Azerbaijan it was possible to order carpets "Kazakh", "Karabakh" and even "Kuba" for some reason.
From abroad, you could choose a Bulgarian carpet or even a carpet from the GDR.
It was possible to buy a handmade or machine-made carpet. It is clear that not everyone could choose, only a few. Ordinary people did not have access to such a catalog, and it was already a great success to buy at least some kind of carpet somewhere.
Therefore, they themselves often did not know what it was made of and what was depicted on it. And meanwhile, in the catalog there was a small description! Which sheds light on the origin of the drawings and their meaning.
For example, the description of Armenian carpets says that the “models” “Yerevan” and “Ijevan” appeared after studying traditional Armenian miniatures.
And the main motif of these carpets is a lotus flower, and already on its stylized petals stylized animals, buds and stems were depicted.
But Turkmen carpets were decorated with rhombuses, which are called “gel”. That is, all these drawings were traditional. They were not invented by Soviet people at all (well, or Soviet people took an old ornament as a basis and reworked it a bit).
Moreover, classical national patterns were taken both for handmade and machine-made carpets. So, even if you had a very cheap synthetic carpet at home, the drawings on it still had a “message”.
I found a few more design meanings that could be used in Soviet carpets.
For example, very often there was a “medallion” in the center, and it symbolized the sun. Interestingly, this was originally an Iranian motive, which was also adopted in the USSR.
And there could also be endless lines on the carpets that curled in different directions, they are called eslim, and this is a Persian motif. Interestingly, geometric patterns could also represent stylized animals or plants.
In general, if you imagined dogs on horseback in curlicues on the carpet by the bed, people carrying trees or dancing cats, maybe you didn’t imagine.

I will have my own medals ...
I was sitting, I was bored, leafing through the reactor, looking at all these New Year's problems and medals and decided to participate too, but ... a little differently. I decided to remember my jewelry skills and rivet my own medals for the reactor. In general, the thought came to me that sometimes I came across posts dedicated to this very reactor, very, very suitable, be it a comic or art, or even a corny "heap" of text. Which gain a lot of pluses and are remembered. Actually, having the skill and opportunity, I decided to create my own medals for such posts (more precisely, for their authors)
Only one big difference, you can feel my medals =)
About the medal itself:
I took the logo
as a base, on the back of the medal, and make a badge (brooch) with this business. In haste now I drew an example
