In the box with the printer

The Wanhao Duplicator i3 3D printer comes with everything you need to start printing right after unpacking the printer from the box. The Wanhao Duplicator i3 of the first version were fully assembled, but in the Duplicator i3 v2.0 (version 2.0) version, the frame consists of two parts, but is easily assembled using eight screws and special hex keys that come with the printer. But in our experience, a print speed no higher than 65 mm per second is the most suitable for this model. Increasing the print speed is fraught with the fact that the extruder may become clogged.

Wanhao MK10 extruder temperature can reach 260°C, although for most types of consumables, the extrusion temperature does not exceed 210°C, so the printer can print elastic and engineering materials.

The Heated Print Bed has a standard size of 200 x 200 mm and is heated to 100°C. The platform is fixed on four spring-loaded screws, which make it easy to calibrate the platform before printing.

Not so long ago, an updated version of the popular 3D printer in Russia - Wanhao Duplicator i3 Plus, went on sale, in addition, sales of the latest Duplicator i3 V 2.1 modification began. We decided to figure out how the new products differ from previous versions.

Features.

As can be seen from the characteristics they are absolutely similar. Only the price differs.

Appearance.

If Wanhao i3 2.0 and Wanhao i3 2.1 are visually almost indistinguishable from each other, then in Wanhao i3 Plus the absence of a control unit is immediately evident. In the i3 Plus version, he moved under the heating table. This makes the printer more compact and the frame is more stable.

Wanhao i3 Plus also got a convenient touch screen. (No, unfortunately not MKS-TFT32).

Mechanics.

I did not find any radical differences in the mechanics of the printer. The design of the carriage changes slightly. In v 2.1 the bearings on the X axis have been replaced.

Airflow has changed compared to Wanhao i3 2.0. The fan has become larger, and the nozzle airflow shroud is wider.

Although the blowing direction remained the same incomprehensible - above and to the right of the printed part. In general, few printers can boast of a competent airflow arrangement.

Electronics.

Wanhao i3 Plus has got an elegant cable that goes to the extruder instead of a bunch of wires.

This is a slightly ambiguous improvement. Someone claims that the cable is less reliable than wires, someone vice versa.

When I got to the insides of the printers, I saw that in principle there were no special changes in the "stuffing". Visually the same board. Only the model of the power supply changes slightly.

Table calibration.

In all Wanhao i3, the table is calibrated using 4 points.

From the looks of it, everyone has handy knobs for leveling the table. But in Wanhao i3 2.0, the table has to be adjusted using a hexagon while holding the lamb with the other hand. It is very uncomfortable.
Wanhao i3 2.1 and Wanhao i3 Plus no longer have this problem.

Since Wanhao i3 2.1 version, it is possible to adjust the height of the limit switch along the Z axis. This will be useful for those who are used to printing on glass.

By the way, Wanhao i3 2.1 comes with glass. Wanhao i3 2.0 and Wanhao i3 Plus do not have glass.

Printer management.

Wanhao i3 Plus turned out to have very convenient controls. If earlier you had to wander through the printer menu for a long time to find the desired item, now almost anything can be done in a few clicks.

Added option to load/unload filament. A trifle, but nice.

Wanhao i3 Plus has become much friendlier to the novice user compared to previous versions. This makes me happy.

ABS tests.

Wanhao i3 2. 0 and Wanhao i3 2.1 have an undeniable advantage when printing ABS - it is the ability to close the printer with a camera.
In this case, the control unit with all electronics will remain outside and will not heat up additionally. I would be afraid to cover Wanhao i3 Plus with a “cap”.

PLA tests.

While printing, Wanhao i3 2.0 shows very large temperature jumps +/- 10-15 degrees on the display. Wanhao i3 2.1 and Wanhao i3 Plus no longer had this problem.

Tests with soft plastic. (NinjaTek Cheetan)

In the end, we decided to try printing with soft plastic. In principle, everything is excellent. Only the Wanhao i3 2.0 got a little undercooled when printing. Because of this, the outer contour is badly sintered.

Total.

It's nice to see that 3D printers are becoming more friendly and understandable to the novice user. Despite the fact that some decisions of the Wanhao i3 Plus are quite controversial, I think it will definitely find its niche among inexpensive 3D printers.
