3D printing of lithium batteries will become very real

No matter how much we criticize or praise 3D printing technology, it continues to develop and acquire new and original forms of its application. Thanks to Jennifer Lewis, a scientist at Harvard University, we may soon see the first printed versions of the battery, which may be on the horizon for mass launch.

At CES 2014 (Consumer Electornic Show) in Las Vegas, where 20,000 new 3D printing products and technologies will be demonstrated to the public, there is a good chance to see the first prototype of this product.

As for the technology itself, Lewis has developed a technique that allows you to create 3D printed batteries using "functional" paints that harden almost immediately, as soon as the object has received the desired shape. The paint itself is made up of lithium nanoparticles or other chemical elements, depending on the type of end product.

What is the advantage of using 3D technology, which is quite expensive today, to create banal and ordinary batteries? Firstly, with the manufacturing method described above, it is possible to produce not only batteries, but also other components, whether they be electrodes, wires or antennas. Of course, the composition of the base material will be radically different. To create a "printed" analogue of the wire, it is necessary to use paint from silver nanoparticles.

Secondly, the process itself will take a few minutes, as the components of the unique ink dry quickly enough. Well, the main trump card, according to Jennifer Lewis, is the ability of even the smallest battery, the surface area of ​​\u200b\u200bwhich is only 1 mm ² , to work just as efficiently as the full size power supplies we are used to. The reason for this lies in the principles of the 3D printing technology itself, which will allow working with microarchitectures with a measurement accuracy of 100 nm. To put it simply, it will be possible to miniaturize existing batteries today, while maintaining their ability to provide the necessary charge using a completely new manufacturing approach.
