  • Additional License Key

    In case of the main license key being lost or damaged, a new license can be generated for your scanner and a new key can be issued. The previous licence will be canceled during that process.

  • Protective travel case

    PRO scanners are supplied in a special plastic box that is indispensable to store and easily transport your 3D equipment to the site. However, if you desire additional protection against impacts during transportation, there is an option to receive the 3D scanner in a protective travel case which will guarantee additional shock resistance. Depending on the package, tripod and turntable might be supplied as a separate shipping unit.

  • Automatic TL turntable

    Turntable allows the user to automate the scanning process of small to medium-sized objects. The turntables platform performs a series of rotations, which add up to 360°, obtaining scans in between, allowing to scan the object from every angle and automatically align the scans. The turntable connects to the host PC through a USB port and to the 220V power source through the adapter.

Smart RangeVision Smart » Profitable 3D printing studio

Last winter, thanks to one of the distributors, I received a Smart scanner from Range Vision for testing. I have long wanted to feel this professional scanner with my hands, and find out its capabilities, and how justified its use, for example, in a 3D printing studio.

What capabilities of this scanner does the manufacturer claim?

Connects the scanner with an HDMI cable and two USBs, plus one for the turntable.

According to the characteristics, in principle, sufficient accuracy for FDM printing. Here a dozen back and forth, with a layer of 0.1-0.2 mm - a normal phenomenon. The main thing is not like some budget scanners 0.5-1mm. When you can only get something “based on” the original model.

What's in the box

The scanner comes in this nice metal case. I had a version with a rotating table in the kit. And without it, to be honest, small objects are quite inconvenient to scan.

Now, as far as I know, the scanner is only available with a turntable. The case is easy to carry and light weight. All components of the scanner are located and fixed in the grooves intended for them. When carrying, such a case can even be dropped without consequences for the scanner. But of course this is not recommended. But everything happens in life.

In addition to the scanner, the kit includes a power supply, a set of wires for connecting to a computer and calibration plates on a magnetic stand. There are several standard sizes for different scanning areas.

You can also see the flexible tripod for mounting the scanner. Allen key to adjust the position of the cameras for different scan modes. There is also a flash drive key for the software.

Under the turntable are all the necessary wires for operation.

Calibration tables of a different size are located behind the fold-down top foam sheet. There is also a sheet with marker stickers for this scanning mode. Markers are not unique, and as you use up, you can go to a printing store to take a self-adhesive sheet and print a new set.

The scanner consists of a projector and two cameras mounted on a rail.

Three camera positions can be seen on the rail for different scanning modes.

To move the cameras, you need to loosen two bolts, with the hexagon that comes with the kit.

Everything is done thoroughly. The plastic is durable. Guide profile made of aluminium.

Tripod for mounting the scanning module with level. Using it is quite simple. Installation and adjustment is not difficult. The scanning module stands on it quite steadily. Unless, of course, you try to bend any patterns from the legs.

The turntable is quite minimalist. But in fact, why pervert with the design, a utilitarian mechanism is enough? A rubber coating is glued to the surface of the table. The table is connected with a separate USB cable to the computer.

Smallest calibration plate for small parts scanning. This plate is mounted on a magnetic stand. Removed, installed and adjusted easily and without problems.

Software

The scanner uses RangeVision's proprietary ScanCenter software. The software is universal for the entire line of scanners. That is, even when buying a budget Smart, we get the same processing algorithms as for more expensive, professional scanners. Here, everything depends on the possibility of iron.

Software requires Windows 7,8,10 64-bit. Memory at least 4 GB.

The requirements are quite low, by today's standards. The more powerful the computer, the faster the scans will be processed. In principle, you can use budget solutions, only the processing time will increase.

Closed software - uses the hardware key that comes with the scanner.

The program is very easy to learn. Everything is clear and there is a “master” for all modes.

Three scan modes can be selected:

  • Markerless Scan
  • Scanning with markers
  • Scanning on a turntable

And select texture capture if needed.

Calibration

As I said earlier, the calibration process is as simple as possible. You just need to follow the prompts on the screen.

Calibration determines how good a scan you get. It is better to do everything carefully and follow the instructions. Then you squeeze out the maximum result from the scanner. Like I said, it's not difficult. You just need to do everything right, following the prompts.

After calibration, you can start scanning.

Scanning

The scanning process, especially on the turntable, is as automated as possible.

The scanner simply presents a set of scans at the end. These scans can then be sent for processing or the next scan can be started.

Gluing “scans”

The “gluing” process is possible both in automatic and manual mode. The automatic mode, especially in the version of projects on a turntable, works almost flawlessly. After starting the process, you just need to wait and then follow the instructions to carry out the final processing.

In manual mode, the process of "gluing" scans is also not complicated. The main thing is to carefully read the instructions, and then only show the program what to “glue” to what.

Surface irregularities are not artifacts. This is a relief of the original model.

In general, it's easier to see the result than to talk and describe the advantages, write all sorts of laudatory reviews and compare dozens.

You can download the model and evaluate the quality of the scan. And this is what I scanned without a matting spray. And the model shines.

Results

Unfortunately, during the period of use, no orders were found that would require the use of a scanner. But as luck would have it, they appeared later, where his help would be in demand. What can I say about the operation and the need for this equipment?

If there are tasks of 3D scanning or reverse engineering of medium complexity, then RangeVision Smart is the level of quality that can solve such tasks.

If you constantly have such tasks, then maybe it makes sense to think about such a scanner.

If we consider cheaper scanners, of course, those that I have seen. There is only one conclusion - not a single one even came close to Smart in terms of scanning quality.

The scanner is designed for professional use. Therefore, there is no need to shout why the price tag is so big.
