Polypropylene printing on Uniqbot SPP

Good day. We decided to start a series of articles devoted to experiments on Uniqbot SPP with polypropylene (PP). Why is that? Trite because a little more than a year ago it was on it that we conducted the first launch of our improved extruder, and we were convinced that it was possible to work with it. And also because, having launched it already on a 3D printer, they achieved results.

When we assembled the first Uniqbot SPP prototype and tested polylactide on it, we switched to PP. The extruder itself handled the continuous and stable feeding and extrusion of PP through the 0.4 nozzle without any problems. But, as expected, having printed out the first product, we were convinced that printing with pure PP is meaningless - insane shrinkage (1. 5-3%). The geometry is completely off.

Moreover, PP has extremely low adhesion to the table and to all standard adhesives: PVA glue, thermal tape, hairspray, as well as to various specialized reactive adhesives ( type BF-2) for printing. As a result, we used a table made of PP sheet, and we also used a raft in the print settings so that the part could be easily removed from the printing table at the end of printing. For better adhesion to the surface on the first layers, we increased the printing temperature.

But the unsatisfactory print quality with pure PP did not upset us much. We needed to determine the fundamental possibility of printing PCB on Uniqbot SPP. As mentioned in the last article, the printer is designed for printing with composite materials, so we switched to PP + 30% glass fiber (GF) manufactured by Polyplastic.

PP + 30% DM has excellent physical and mechanical properties compared to unfilled PP:

At the same time, PP is characterized by chemical inertness, and composites based on it have close chemical inertness.

Together, all these properties allow the use of this material in the automotive, aviation and chemical industries.

PP+30% CB has a high enough MFR for 3D printing, so during the first tests we constantly encountered material overfeed.

This problem was solved by reducing the print temperature and material feed.

Another issue was the abrasiveness of the fiberglass, which caused the brass nozzle to bore during printing.

We therefore switched to steel and tungsten carbide nozzles. We purchased the latter from colleagues from the Perm Polytechnic University.

Filling PP with fiberglass reduces shrinkage to less than 1%, which is critical for achieving print quality and maintaining the geometry of the final product.

PP test paddle + 30% DM

After testing the material, we received an order to print a gear for the machine mechanism. The gear itself was milled from polyamide-6 (which we also print on Uniqbot SPP, but more on that in the next article ;)) mechanism. For better strength of the part, we decided to make the wall thickness 2 mm, filling 100%.

Print options:

Nozzle 1.0;
Speed 30mm/s;
Nozzle temperature 215 °C.

Reinforced PP makes the part strong and durable. It passed all tests at the customer's production site and installed in the equipment. And it works successfully.

Let's recap. We see great prospects in 3D printing of PP + 30% CB. Filament is not made from it due to its strong abrasive properties. However, our Uniqbot SPP is ready to work with such material and produce structural parts.
