Dr. Krieg went to a 3D printer – XYZ 160
Dr. Krieg went to a 3D printer — October 7, 2019
When I start working on Dr. Krieg model I could never guess it will reach 3D printer. I had a cool idea and visual style of model was my main concern. Therefore I did not pay attention to certain technical stuff that might create issues with 3D printing. I wanted it to look nice and not to have too many triangles if I ever loaded it in game engine or web viewer.
So Dr. Krieg model was finished, I rendered an image, posted it on platforms I use to share my work and I moved to the next model. It sat on my SSD and I never actually got back to it.
One sunny afternoon I decided to grab a beer with a colleague of mine.
“What’s up?”
He told me that he finally purchased a 3D printer for his office at home. Primarily being a programmer all that 3D print stuff was relatively new to him, so he was still messing around – getting used to a new technology.
“You might try to print one of mine models if you’d like. Try something more complex than presets.”
He was all up for it and Dr. Krieg came to my mind. At that moment I could suspect that some tweaking might be necessary, but I never did models for print. I loaded high poly version of my model (because details are cool) a couple of days later and began preparations.
Blender comes with a built-in add-on named “3D Print Toolbox”. It’s not enabled by default, but it can be activated in Edit – Preferences – Add-ons – Mesh: 3D Print Toolbox. Once enabled you can find it in the right panel of 3D viewport, bottom tab. 3D Print Toolbox offer model analysis, cleanup and export to .stl format. Perfect, exactly what I need.
What I did not know is how bad my model is for a 3D printer to process. Being high poly it had hundreds of manifold edges, intersect faces, thin faces and so on. I usually go with clean geometry on low poly mesh, with high poly being there only for all the cool details.
Fixing high poly version manually would be a nightmare.
First step was to merge all objects to one and apply Remesh modifier. What does Remesh actually do? It will take an object and regenerate new topology using surface curvature as a guideline. What brought a smile to my face is that new topology is only quads spaced equally. To transfer all the details from model to a new mesh I had to crank Octree depth (resolution of a generated mesh) up to 10.
I’ve ended up with a +3 510 000 faces – obviously too much. But yet again, lower Octree depth would decrease details of the surface. So I’ve decided to do mesh optimisation as step on top of the Remesh modifier, either as another modifier or external tool. Adding a Decimate modifier was too slow so I decided to download old tool I used for clean-up of photoscanes.
It’s MeshLab – a cool little open source program you can use for an enormous number of operations on 3D mesh. I’ve loaded exported .obj into MeshLab and ran “Simplification: Quadric Edge Collapse Decimation” filter on my model.
Cool thing with this filter is that uses target face count as input, so I went with 200 000.

Finally I had detailed and clean model I could send to my colleague to do his magic. It took 6 hours to print and we met for another beer. I was surprised hot much of a detail printer managed to print concerning model size and print resolution. Removal of support structure was no fun, but I managed to do it with breaking one hand only. Fortunately plastic used works well with glue so hand was fixed, and removal of support structure was complete.
It’s a cool feeling to have a custom figure of your own model next to a computer monitor. Hopefully in time I will print another creation of mine, maybe even create a collection. But, at the moment, Dr. Krieg is only physical representation of my work, guarding my PC with two cannons on his hands and nasty mouth on its belly.
