Army Helicopter 3D Printing | 3dbot.ru: 3d printing technologies
The black hawk is a long-lived bird, and like many aerospace projects, it faces problems with the legacy parts supply chain. The Black Hawk helicopter entered service with the army at 1979, and his Lima model ceased production 15 years ago. Some of the Black Hawk components are at least 40 years old.
Of course, 3D printing can save the day in some cases. But for this you need a CAD model.
And so the Wichita State University National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) will build a digital twin of the said Black Hawk helicopter in order to develop an assembly line of replacement parts for 3D printing.
Many 3D digital twins are built as a sort of dynamic master model from the start of a project, updated and revised as the model changes. This adds a lot of downstream value, especially when it comes to technical drawings and manufacturing CAD models.
Why create a dozen different 3D models for the same part when you can just download the latest geometry from an ever-evolving digital twin?
However, in this case, instead of reaping the benefits of an existing digital twin, NIAR engineers are building the Twin with the express intention of creating legacy 3D printing hardware.
One interesting fact noted in the initial press release concerns the tender processes. Presumably, aerospace companies looking to bid on legacy work will experience fewer bids (or zero bids at all) because vendors don't want to commit to low-production jobs with hard-to-find components. And if they do receive applications, then it can take up to 2 years to get parts from the manufacturer.
“One of the main challenges in this work is to convert all the legacy 2D drawings of this aircraft into modern 3D parametric models,” said John Tomblin, senior vice president of industrial and defense programs and executive director of NIAR.
“This will allow the army to supply parts that are not being manufactured, as well as use advanced technologies such as additive manufacturing to produce parts.”
This new way of thinking seems to be reflected in the US Army Air and Missile Command policy memorandum on advanced manufacturing of parts, components and ancillary products for US Army aircraft.
The recently published guidance aims to strike a balance between safety, increased availability and higher costs, and it appears that local additive manufacturing and the elimination of intermediaries should be largely included in this new strategy. Especially when it comes to aging aircraft like the Black Hawk.
Of course, creating a new digital twin from scratch provides an opportunity to capture any data that may have been omitted/omitted during the initial stages of the technical drawing.
