3D printer starts printing real dinosaurs

11/26/2013

Dinosaurs today can be found in shop windows in the form of children's toys or souvenirs, on the pages of books, newspapers and magazines, from time to time ancient lizards devour the heroes of science fiction films. It is no secret that real prehistoric reptiles, the very ones that lived on Earth millions of years ago, long before the appearance of man, mass culture and Hollywood, today live in viewing rooms and storerooms of museums and scientific laboratories.

For more than a century, hundreds of researchers from all over the world, like thrifty owners, have been accumulating tons of dinosaur fossils, collecting from fragile remains the skeletons of animals that once reigned on Earth.

"For everyone who works with dinosaur bones, there is the problem of their destruction and the impossibility of extracting them from the rock where they are stored," says Ahi Sema Issever from the Charite Clinical Complex in Berlin.

During the years of excavations, German paleontologists have collected a rich collection of dinosaur remains, but many exhibits were damaged or destroyed during the bombing of Berlin during World War II.

Together with colleagues, Dr. Issever once examined a stone block with bones stored inside using computed tomography, trying to get a three-dimensional model of the samples.

"We are talking about fossils stored in the basement of the Berlin Museum of Natural History (Museum für Naturkunde)," says Dr. Issaver.

This cellar contained a huge amount of fossils brought back from the Tanzanian Expedition 1909-1913 and excavations at Halberstadt in 1909. One of the finds is a piece of concrete, in which rock and a fragment of a dinosaur were immured for safety.

Without resorting to mechanical action, the scientists scanned the layers in layers and restored the three-dimensional structure of the sample. As a result, an image of a huge vertebra 21 centimeters long and 17 centimeters wide appeared on the computer monitor screen.

Comparing the image with archival sketches made during the expeditions, the researchers determined that the vertebra belonged to Plateosaurus, a large herbivorous Triassic dinosaur that grew up to 10 meters in length.

Since the scientists had a detailed 3D diagram of one of the bones in their hands, they decided to resort to the increasingly popular 3D printing technique. Using the technology of laser sintering of plastic powder, a 3D printer created an exact copy of the bone.

In the future, Issaver's team plans to restore all damaged exhibits from the Natural History Museum in Berlin in the same way, and also try to recreate a copy of a real dinosaur using 3D printing technology.
