Hamilton 3D Printing Collaboration | HPL
The 4th Floor of Central Library is abuzz with the sound of 3D printers creating face shields, face shield frames and ear savers to protect frontline workers batting COVID-19.
The printers come from the City of Hamilton, Hamilton Public Library, Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board, Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board and Innovation Factory. Further assistance comes from shop3D.
If you’d like to help with this collaborated effort, here are some answers to commonly asked questions.
Q. I have a 3D printer. How can I help?
A. Download the STL files below and start printing your own parts.
Face Shield Bracket
Surgical Mask / Ear Saver Strap
Q. What material should I use to print?
A. The recommended material is PLA. This has been tested and is the most sanitary.
Q. What are the suggest 3D print settings?
A. Here's the list:
- Units are in mm
- 100% infill
- No supports, rafts or brim necessary
- 0.3 mm layer height (for faster printing)
- 100 mm/sec or higher print speed
- No need to wait for the part to cool before removing. Hold it in the desired shape for a few seconds after
Q. Do I need to supply the elastics and visor sheets?
A. No. The team at Hamilton Public Library, in conjunction with the City of Hamilton, are sourcing these parts.
Q. Where do I send or drop off the items?
A. Please consolidate shipments/drop-offs if you plan to produce multiple items. Completed components can also be dropped off with Security at the Central Library (address below).
Please mail printed face shield component to:
Hamilton Public Library

If you have filament you can contribute, send it to Central Library, 55 York St., Hamilton.
Q. Who can I contact if I need more information or have questions?
A. For more information about this project and links to the 3D files, please reach out on covidstop.ca
Q. How can I help raise awareness or share my contribution?
A. Please join the CovidStop Facebook group.
Q. Are there other groups doing similar in our community that I can help support?
A. Yes. The organizations listed below are also supporting community partners and accepting printed parts, volunteers or other support. Please check with each organization, as there are different designs and needs, depending on the respective group.
- Operation COVID Mask
- 3D PPE GTHA
(If you are supporting 3D Printing or similar related non-profit initiatives and want to be included on this list please contact us and we will be happy to include you.)
Note: Recipient organizations should sterilize all PPE before distributing.

Construction 3D Printers Help Solve India's Lack of Toilets
News
Singapore-based Hamilton Labs has undertaken to solve one of India's most pressing problems - the lack of toilets. In large-scale construction, it is planned to use 3D printers printing with geopolymer cement mixtures from recycled industrial waste. nine0005
The Indian government is well aware that 524 million people, or almost half of the country's population, are forced to live in unsanitary conditions, defecating in the open air. The lack of sewerage in poor regions contributes to the development of infectious diseases, and therefore the authorities are conducting a massive program to build one hundred million public toilets. To date, the plan has been completed by about 60%, but this is clearly not enough, especially since the remaining 40 million are planned to be built before the end of this year, and this is a huge amount of work. nine0005
Hamilton Labs, an additive technology research and production center at the National University of Singapore, came to help with the project. Employees of the company intend to force the schedule with construction 3D printers based on industrial robotic arms. Of particular interest is the choice of material. As a consumable, geopolymer concrete with a high content of fly ash obtained from coal combustion will be used.
There is enough ash, because coal-fired power plants remain the main source of electricity not only in India, but also in neighboring China, and in general in most countries of the Asia-Pacific region. Thus, the Singapore printer-builders intend to kill two birds with one stone - to solve the problem of sanitation and dispose of waste from the energy industry. The start of work is scheduled for the last days of January, as soon as the first HamilBot Mark 1 3D printer arrives.
Several enterprises and universities around the world are developing specialized geopolymer blends for building 3D printing using industrial waste, including Singapore's Nanyang Technological University ( in the illustration above ) and the Russian-Italian startup Renca, collaborating with the Irkutsk manufacturer of building 3D Apis Cor printers.
