3D Printers Play Music from Mario Bros., Star Wars' Imperial March & More - 3DPrint.com

When I mention the phrase ‘3D printer music,’ you likely think of one of the numerous 3D printed musical instruments we have covered over the last year. Perhaps the saxophone printed by Olaf Diegal, or the world’s first 3D printed live concert, which was hosted at Lund University in Sweden, came to mind. Maybe you thought about MakerBot’s percussion instruments that they released the files for on Thingiverse, or even the woman who printed the hand-cranked record player. What you most likely did not even consider is that perhaps I was referring to 3D printers actually making music themselves.

That’s just what several individuals have been doing, especially recently in the release of several very awesome 3D printer tunes on YouTube.

As you likely know, most 3D printers are not exactly quiet. In fact, noise is oftentimes one of the biggest complaints of individuals who recently purchased a 3D printer. I personally can’t stand printing documents on my 2D printer when I’m trying to concentrate at my desk, much less a 3D printer. With that said, the sounds emitted from these sophisticated devices also can be music to your ears, quite literally. By hacking a simple MIDI file, and then outputting a Gcode which will produce the same frequencies and duration of each note within the music, the stepper motors are able to put out quite an incredible ensemble.

I’ve actually heard quite a few amazing musical performances over the last year put on by the likes of Ultimaker, PrintrBot, MakerBot, and others, but this latest one, performed by a Rostock 3D printer, excited me the most, while bringing back fond memories of the mid- to late 1980’s. What more could you ask for than the Mario Bros. theme song, produced by stepper motors, nearly perfectly?

This week seems to be one filled with music for some reason. As I was listening to the Mario Bros. music above and browsing Reddit at the same time, I stumbled upon Reddit user silviustro’s recent post where he used his 3D printer to perform quite a spectacular rendition of the ‘Imperial March’ from the Star Wars films. Check out this performance below:

Anyone with a 3D printer can turn their manufacturing machine into a musical machine if they have the patience, know-how, and a little bit of skill. In fact, a decent tutorial along with links to programs needed for MIDI-to-Gcode conversions can be found here. I have to admit it’s quite amazing how someone was able to figure out just which motor movements would equate to each note within a MIDI, but the work is done already for you, so enjoy!

For beginners who need a slicer to prepare STL files for 3D printing

Cura is the default slicer software for all Ultimaker 3D printers, but can be used with most others , including RepRap, Makerbot, Printrbot, Lulzbot and Witbox. The program is completely open source, its capabilities can be extended using plugins.

This program is very easy to use and allows you to manage the most important 3D printing settings through a clear interface. Start in Basic mode to quickly get up to speed and change print quality settings. If finer control is required, switch to Expert mode. nine0005

From a rolling pin to a 3D printer: how a school teacher "reformatted" technology lessons

A rare city holiday in Orenburg is already here a couple of decades without the song "I am an Orenburger". The author of this provincial hit and the unofficial anthem is Sergei Ivanovich Shmelev, an honored cultural worker with over 500 songs in his portfolio. But music, despite the honorary title, is only Shmelev's hobby. Sergey Ivanovich works as a teacher of technology at the European Lyceum in the village of Prigorodny and has devoted more than 30 years of his life to teaching at school. Nevertheless, at the age of 61, the teacher himself ended up at his desk, deciding to study under the federal WorldSkills 50+ program as part of the Demography national project and master a completely new area for himself. The schedule of the new academic year for Shmelev has developed in such a way that he is busy from seven in the morning until seven in the evening almost every day. The lyceum won a grant for the introduction of additive technologies in the educational course, in other words, 3D printing. Under the terms of the competition, several teachers had to undergo appropriate training. This is how Shmelev got acquainted with the Humanitarian and Technical College of Orenburg, where classes were held in the direction of "production of prototypes". nine0005

Most of the program took place during the pandemic-related restrictions, so it was conducted remotely. And yet, during the summer holidays, we managed to ask exciting questions to teachers personally and master 3D printers in practice.

"We had a cheerful group: I was the only man, all the rest were women, all over 50, and mostly elementary school teachers. Our generation was "unfortunate", we encountered computers in adulthood, then smartphones. Information a lot, you have to master it," Sergei Ivanovich shared his impressions. nine0005

New technologies in the back room

Sergei Ivanovich did not have to look for a long time to apply his new competencies. Immediately after the end of the course, the lyceum received 3D printers and multi-colored plastic. It was decided to deploy a kind of 3D laboratory in the former utility room of the technology office, where there had been no repairs for 20 years. “Instead of a vacation, we painted everything on our own, whitewashed it, ordered furniture, mounted racks, where we placed boxes with plastic, installed and tested the printer. In parallel, Shmelev prepared a curriculum for grades 7 and 8, which will be tested for the first time in the lyceum in the 2020-2021 academic year. He admits that so far he has mastered additive technologies more in theory than in practice, but ideas are born in the process. One of these is to print uniform key rings for the keys to the school classrooms. "There are options on the Internet that can be made using a 3D printer, you can download and print anything - from frightening skulls to flower vases, but I would like to model everything and make it myself, from scratch, by trial and error. Now we want to organize a robotics club at school, to make models whose plastic parts can be made on a 3D printer. I don’t know how this will work out, any business takes time. But we will start, and the children will run ahead of us, we will only coordinate, "- Shmelev believes. nine0005

In September, the first technology lessons were held at the lyceum, the boys, according to Sergei Ivanovich, are eager to test the capabilities of the printer, but he deliberately delays practical classes, teaching theory. "I believe that a 3D printer is a toy that can prepare a person for working on CNC machines in the future, for example. It is interesting to know the process itself, and the products made on it are most often entertainment, which is why it is so addictive," shared the opinion of the teacher.
