Where tourists can see the buildings printed on the printer

29.01.2023

The world's first 3D printed mosque will appear in Dubai. 3D printing is gradually transforming the construction industry. Modern printers are able to create the most unimaginable structures - from bunkhouses to palaces literally from garbage in a short time. And many of these buildings already attract tourists.

THE FIRST ARAB STATE WITH 3D PRINTED ARCHITECTURE

A 3D printed mosque is scheduled for construction in Dubai in October 2023. The building with an area of two thousand square meters, capable of accommodating up to 600 people, is planned to be erected in the historic district of Bur Dubai. In total, the project will take about sixteen months four months for construction, including 3D printing, and another year for fittings and fittings. Completion of construction is scheduled for 2025.

“The use of 3D printing will reduce construction waste. This technology is friendly to the environment and the mosque will symbolize the wisdom of our leadership,” said Hamad Al Shaybani, Director General of the Department of Islamic Affairs and Charities in Dubai.

The building process will require three workers to maintain the robotic printer. Every hour, the printer will be able to print two square meters of construction - from raw materials and concrete mix.

“The cost will be thirty percent more expensive than building a mosque with conventional methods, but this is because this is the first project of its kind in the world. We expect future cost parity and a thirty-year warranty.” Ali Al Suwaidi, Director of Engineering at the Dubai Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities, said.

The 3D mosque is far from the only innovative project that is being created using such technologies in the UAE. There are already buildings printed on the printer.

Thus, Dubai became the first Arab state with 3D printed architecture. In 2016, the Chinese company WinSun built the "Office of the Future" complex. Moreover, this project does not look like a huge skyscraper, but consists of several one-story buildings with a futuristic look. The office building covers an area of about 250 sq. m.

A special 6-meter printer was used to print the structure. It is noteworthy that instead of plastic, a mixture of cement and building materials “designed and manufactured in the UAE and in the USA” was used. According to a government press release, the materials have passed reliability tests in China and the UK. Additional security to the building is given by its arched shape.

And in 2019, a two-story 3D printed building appeared in Dubai, which entered the Guinness Book of Records as the largest construction project created using such technologies. Now the building is used as an innovation center of the municipality of Dubai. Its height is 9.5 meters, area - 640 square meters. m.

Work on the project lasted about a year. The printing of the final building took 500 hours of computer time. The house was built by only 15 people - half as many as usual, and the amount of waste was reduced by 60%. It is noteworthy that the building was erected in completely natural climatic conditions, when the air temperature could reach from 40 to 50 degrees Celsius, humidity 80%, and it could rain.

The project was experimental. After its completion, the authorities of the emirate came to the conclusion that the construction of such a structure would now take no more than three months - while the traditional method of construction takes about a year. And on the face of budget savings - instead of 2. 5 million dirhams (47 million rubles), it will cost only 1 million (about 19 million rubles).

3D HOTEL ROOM AS A LUXURY HOTEL ANNEX

In 2015, the luxurious Lewis Grand Hotel in Angeles, Philippines launched the world's first 3D printed luxury hotel room. The total area of the room was 130 square meters. A giant 3D printer realized a fairly complex design concept in 100 hours.

The unique structure has become a separate extension to the main hotel. The apartment includes a living room, two bedrooms and a bathroom with Jacuzzi. The room provides all the necessary amenities and utilities, including electricity and water supply, plumbing. To increase the strength of the structure of the structure during the construction of walls, iron reinforcement was used.

The owner of the hotel was pleased with the result and subsequently signed a contract for the construction of 20 more similar apartments. The advantages of this method of construction are obvious - the printer is able to print up to 6 houses per week, and at the same time it reduces material and labor costs by up to 60 percent.

3D HOUSE TO HIDE FROM THE ELEMENTS

Tiny 3D building measuring only 8 sqm was created in 2015 by Dus Architects in the industrial area of Amsterdam. This shelter from the elements can be rented by anyone. The miniature house has a veranda and a sofa that turns into a double bed.

There is also a bathroom created on a 3D printer, which, however, had to be moved outside due to lack of space. The shelter is made of bioplastic based on linseed oil. For the stability of the building, it was decided not to use heavy frames, the engineers designed the walls of the building in the form of honeycombs.

This urban shelter is part of a project to build temporary functional housing in the country. 3D technologies in the Netherlands are planned to be actively used to provide housing for victims of natural disasters.
