Calibry is a hand-held 3D scanner meant to capture objects from 20cm to 10m in length. The name invokes images of Colibri (aka “Hummingbird”) which is known for its small size and incredible speed.
It is also consonant with the word “calibrated” – accurate, precise. Black surfaces | Shiny objects | Sharp edges | Human hair |
Built-in Touchscreen | Lightweight & Portable | Fast Capture |
Allows you to see what you scanned. No need for a computer screen | Under 900 gr (1.5lbs). Take it with you anywhere you go. | 30 frames per second. What will you do with all that extra time? Get up to 3M points per second! |
Scans what others can’t | Complementary & Powerful software | Proprietary Camera |
Sharp edges, black & shiny objects, and fur & hair are no longer a problem. | Each device comes with unlimited licenses of our simple, yet powerful software. | We developed our own camera for this device. This makes Calibry faster, cheaper and better. |

Meet Thor3D's new affordable handheld 3D scanner Calibry.
Russian-German company Thor3D has been developing 3D scanning solutions for many years, Calibry is their latest product announced in Shanghai.
This is a handheld 3D scanner that can be used to capture medium to large objects, i.e. those ranging in size from 20 cm to 10 m. A toaster can be scanned in 3D as well as an entire car.
The positional accuracy of the scanner is 0.1 mm, and the resolution is 0. 3 mm, which is quite suitable for fairly large objects that will be scanned by this device. Scanning speed - up to 3 million points per second.
Scan speed is very important as it determines how fast you can scan. Many other handheld scanners, which have lower throughput, are inconvenient to use. To get sufficient resolution, you have to move the low-speed handheld scanner very slowly, repeating the movements from time to time to ensure coverage. In addition, these devices are quite heavy.

It is not clear on what principle Calibry works, perhaps not lasers, but structured light. The creators explain that they have used a new camera specially developed by them, which, in addition to providing a high scanning speed, is able to achieve amazing results: it can cope with such complex tasks as scanning objects with a black / shiny / fluffy surface, which other systems give in to .
The camera system is also capable of capturing colored surface textures in addition to 3D geometry. The developers note:
- It is important that Calibry can capture objects that have always been difficult for 3D scanning, such as objects with sharp edges, hair, black and shiny objects. The scanner is also equipped with a built-in texture camera (2.3 MP) and can pick up speed up to 3 million points/s.
Thor3D has achieved another milestone with the new camera, significantly reducing the price of the device to 4 9€90/$5,790 $75,000, prices have now dropped significantly, and some handheld scanners are now available for around $15,000
But Thor3D Calibry's price is one-third that of even these discounted prices. ok, this will bring 3D scanning to many users who previously couldn't afford a 3D scanner for financial reasons.0005
Keep in mind, however, that the Calibry scanner is designed to scan medium to large objects. You probably won't get a good result if you try to scan a small object, such as a piece of jewelry, with this 3D scanner, as an object of this size will only use a small portion of the Calibry's capture.
Thor3D Calibry is a very good option for those who are looking for an inexpensive handheld 3D scanner for working with large objects.
Calibry 3D Scanner Helped Create Realistic 3D Printed Sculptures of Miners in Vyksa

As we have already reported, a steel sculptural composition "Miners" made by local craftsmen on a 3D printer of their own design appeared in the Nizhny Novgorod region. Thor3D, a Russian developer of handheld wireless 3D scanners, shared additional details of the project and talked about their participation.
Vyksa is a small town in the Nizhny Novgorod region, 350 kilometers from Moscow. The history of the city dates back to 1765. The traditional architecture of wooden houses is closely intertwined with industrial buildings, which gives Vyksa a special look. To celebrate the City Day, the city administration commissioned a sculptural composition symbolizing Vyksa. This task was undertaken by Parc3D, a company specializing in the creation of metal art objects using hand forging and laser engraving technologies. The city administration of Vyksa asked them to make a sculpture reflecting the history and origin of the city, based on a sketch of two miners made by historians and ethnographers. The project looked quite ambitious, because the company had never dealt with sculpture before.
The traditional way of making a metal sculpture is artistic casting, which, according to Parc3D experts, is expensive and time-consuming, because the production of such a sculpture as "Miners" would take two to six months, and the cost at best would be fifteen thousand euros. The team decided to use 3D technology to make the process more accessible.
First, they needed a metal printer with enough printable area to make life-size sculptures. After a thorough market research, the Parc3D team decided to create their own 3D printer capable of metal printing. According to the founders of the company, the reason for creating their own printer was the desire to take on more complex and large orders in the field of art objects. The order for "Rudokopov" came at the right time.
The mechanics and design of the 3D printer were developed by startup specialists, the only parts purchased were stepper motors, drivers and a control board. The software is based on the open source Marlin firmware. The new printer has a print volume of 800x800x800 mm and high productivity - from 1.5 to 3 kilograms per hour. The biggest challenge was getting the overhanging corners 3D printed correctly, but the team managed to get the job done and it's now the company's know-how.
After building and testing the 3D printer, the team began working closely with historians and ethnographers to find suitable models. They had to meet certain criteria: a suitable physique and facial features, an important point was the presence of a beard. The next step was to scan the models with the Calibry 3D scanner.
“We chose Calibry because we thought it was the perfect value for money for our project,” said Valery Rysin, one of the company's founders.
Scanning people can sometimes be tricky as the model can unintentionally turn their head, shift from foot to foot and blink. To achieve the best result, the Parc3D team used markers. After implementing the Live3D feature, scanning in geometry mode went smoothly and the team was able to capture high-resolution data.
Along with the Calibry Nest software, Autodesk Meshmixer was used to post-process the models: with the help of Meshmixer, Parc3D specialists adapted the model for printing, the main work was done in Calibry Nest.
The final stage of the project was 3D printing. It took about 150 hours and more than 100 kg of welding wire to make two life-size sculptures weighing about 80 kg each. Despite the fact that the 3D printer has a large useful volume, both statues were printed in parts, followed by welding into a single whole.
