Scientists create the first living heart using 3D printing
Researchers at Tel Aviv University (TAU) have "printed" the world's first 3D artificial heart using a patient's own cells and biological materials.
"This is the first time that a whole heart filled with cells, blood vessels, ventricles and chambers has been successfully created," says study author Professor Tal Dvir of the TAU School of Molecular Cell Biology and Biotechnology.
Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in developed countries. Currently, transplantation is the only treatment option available to patients with end-stage heart failure. Given the acute shortage of donors, the need to develop new approaches to the restoration of a diseased heart is relevant.
“This heart is made from human cells and patient-specific biological materials that serve as so-called Bioinks that can be used to 3D print complex tissue models,” says Professor Dvir. “Until now, scientists in the field of regenerative medicine have only successfully printed simple tissues without blood vessels. Our results open up a promising new approach to developing personalized tissue and organ replacement in the future.”
“At this point, our 3D heart is quite small, about the size of a rabbit's heart,” explains Professor Dvir.
“But large human hearts are not fundamentally different and require the same technology.”
Adipose tissue biopsy was taken from patients for examination. The cells were reprogrammed to become pluripotent stem cells. The extracellular matrix (ECM), a three-dimensional network of extracellular macromolecules such as collagen and glycoproteins, is transformed into a personalized hydrogel that serves as the basis for the "ink".
After mixing with the hydrogel, the cells were differentiated into cardiac or endothelial cells to create patient-specific immune-compatible parts (fragments) of the heart with blood vessels and, therefore, the whole heart.
According to Prof. Dvir, the use of "native" patient-specific materials is critical to successful tissue and organ engineering.
Researchers plan to culture printed hearts in the lab and "teach them to act like real ones." At the next stage, an experiment will take place on transplanting a 3D printed heart into laboratory animals.
