One of the fans of the computer game Borderlands dreamed of a costume for a character named Psycho…
The issue with dirty orange pants and bandages was relatively easy to solve, but with a mask he asked for help, to print it on a 3D printer.
We also started a new competition for 3D printer owners, read under the cut.
After a short search, the mask prototype was found on the Thingverse website.
None of the printers we have had a large enough print area, so it was decided to print the product in parts and then glue them together. To do this, the main part of the mask had to be cut into 4 approximately equal parts in the free Netfabb Basic program. The parts obtained in this way already fit perfectly into the print area of the MC2 3D printer. The printer worked under the control of the Repetier Host program, plastic - PLA, slicer - Cura, infill 20%, without supports. The total printing time was about 15 hours. nine0005
Now it's time to put the printed parts together. As you know, PLA plastic is glued with dichloroethane or dichloromethane. The first is more toxic, but also more common. At an adequate price, it can be found in hardware stores, and at the radio market in Mitino it is sold at almost every step in pavilions selling soldering materials and chemicals.
Dichloroethane turned out to be at our disposal. Since it is a rather highly toxic substance, all work with dichloroethane should be carried out in a well-ventilated area or outdoors. Skin contact with dichloroethane should also be avoided. A good solution would be to work in a mask and gloves. Glued parts do not need to be left indoors. For the drying time, which is about a day, it is better to keep the finished product outside. nine0005
To begin with, we put the parts of the mask together and realized that the gaps between them reach one millimeter in some places. It became obvious that it would not be possible to simply glue the parts together, it was necessary to fill these gaps (putty).
We decided to use PLA print waste dissolved in dichloroethane as an adhesive putty. Finely broken pieces of plastic should be filled with dichloroethane in a sealed container and shaken to speed up the dissolution process. The dissolution of plastic takes some time, so you need to periodically check at what stage the process is.
The finished adhesive putty should have the consistency of sour cream or thick PVA glue. nine0005
Gluing and subsequent puttying took place as follows. We covered the joining edges of the two parts of the upper part of the mask several times with pure dichloroethane and folded them. It is necessary to smear until a noticeable softening of the upper layer of surfaces. As a tool for holding the parts, it turned out to be convenient to use a diffuser for a table lamp that came to hand. The glued parts were dried during the day.
Then the upper part and the two parts of the lower part were glued together. It seemed to us more convenient and faster than gluing the bottom part, drying it, and then gluing the top and bottom parts together. This approach turned out to be quite justified, and in a day all four parts were assembled into one whole and did not fall apart under their own weight. nine0005
It remains to cover the cracks.
According to our assumptions, this should, among other things, give strength to the glued seams. It turned out to be very convenient to use a wooden chopstick cut with a knife as a spatula of a suitable size. Putty was rubbed into the cracks with a spatula as deep as possible.
After a day of drying, the result was very satisfactory. A couple of times the mask fell to the floor from a height of more than a meter and survived! We did not deliberately try to break the finished product, but according to indirect signs (multiple falls, applying a mask to a lot of heads, twirling in a lot of sloppy hands), it turned out to be solid. nine0005
Unfortunately, we cannot yet show how the finished mask looks like, which came out of the caring hands of a game fan, but we successfully solved the task set for us.
