Welcome to the Thomas guide to the best large format 3D printer 2023. Thomas has been connecting North American industrial buyers and suppliers for more than 120 years. When you purchase products through our independent recommendations, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Printing larger items with most at-home or small-scale 3D printers is possible but consists of separately printing different parts of the project and then connecting them all together afterward to make a much larger finished product. In this way, many 3D printing enthusiasts, such as cosplayers, for instance, are able to get past the 3D printing size limitations and use their machines for much larger products than the print bed will allow.

The Best Large Format 3D Printer—Summary

With one of the largest printing beds currently available for a non-industrial 3D printer, the Creality CR-10 S5 3D printer (US$719, Creality 3D) provides an impressive 500x500x500mm of printing space. The Anycubic Chiron (US$623.75, Amazon) is another large-format printer with impressive capabilities and has a superb customer service department too.

Choosing the Best Large-Format 3D Printer—Buying Guide

With the average printing bed size of a 3D printer intended for general use being around 150–300mm, if you wanted to scale up the size of your 3D creations, a printer of 350mm–500mm would be ideal, and luckily, there are a few worthy large-scale models available on the market for you to choose from.

Benefits of a Large 3D Printer

Development in 3D printing technology means that we've recently been presented with 3D-printed houses, cars, bikes, camper vans, life-size statues, and even sofas and other pieces of furniture.

Obviously, the "large format" we're referring to in this article is less about making grand-scale structures, and more about moving on from miniatures, ornaments, and other small objects or parts that an ordinary, non-industrial-sized 3D printer can produce.

Since you'll have a little more print bed area to play with, with a large-format 3D printer you can create detailed products that don't require a magnifying glass to really appreciate and also larger parts that would otherwise need to be printed in separate sections.

We hope our review of the best large-format 3D printer has been helpful. Frequently Asked Questions

Which technology to choose: the method of fusing granules (FGF) or polymer filaments (FFF / FDM)?

What are the kinematics and mechanics of the Discovery equipment?

In this respect, all Discovery equipment differs from budget additive solutions. The products are based on the kinematic diagram of a CNC machine. Gears, pulleys, lead screws, no belts. HIVIN rail guides are used. The entire structure is made with European quality from advanced products in the machine tool industry.

What consumables can be used with Discovery products?

Any material (other than PEEK and PEKK) sold in bars or pellets. First of all, thanks to the heating of the table to 175 ° C and vacuum fixation, as well as due to the installed nozzles made of hardened steel.

How is such a large print platform heated?

A matrix of separate equidistant heaters is built into the platform from the bottom side; these modules provide uniform heating of the surface of the printing platform. The maximum recorded temperature difference over the entire area is 3°C.

How to speed up printing on such large dimensions?

There is a special method for properly emptying the internal volume, which you can learn more about from our technical experts. This procedure will have very little effect on the strength and elasticity of the print object, but will still reduce the time by up to 60%.
It is important to consider that with a large range of large-sized products, it is better to consider Super Discovery 3D Printer or Super Discovery 3D Printer Workstation with a capacity of up to 11 kg / h (depending on the material used).

Is it possible to upgrade this equipment for a specific enterprise?

Yes. Most of the Discovery machines can be upgraded for a specific production project. This is possible, since the equipment was designed for the tasks of Production 4.0, and our specialists will help to integrate it correctly.

What is the warranty for this equipment?

24 months, which is 1.5 - 2 times more than analogues from Europe, Russia and China. Permanent customer support is provided directly by the vendor or iQB Technologies specialists.

How to get a high quality product so that it can be handed over as a final product?

3D printing is basically a high quality preform process. If you need to get the final product, it is suggested to use milling or turning equipment, manual machining, priming, painting or varnishing.
This is often not necessary as the product is not visible.

Production of 3D printers to order

Our company is engaged not only in the sale of ready-made standard projects of already developed models. We offer the production of 3D printers to order according to the technical specifications of the customer. Why is this approach being taken?

First of all, due to the peculiarities of printing with different types of polymers using FDM (FFF) technology - layer-by-layer deposition of plastic. Different types of polymer have different characteristics. These are temperature shrinkage, interlayer adhesion, adhesion to a hot table (platform), requirements for airflow or the presence of a temperature chamber, and much more. Strictly speaking, there is no universal 3D printer at the moment.

Printers also differ in the types (types) of mechanics, in the electrical and electronics used, in the cost and quality of the components, in the type and type of extruders. For high-quality and reliable printing, all these parameters must be taken into account when developing a custom 3D printer.

A simple example - what type of extruder is more suitable for a 3D printer with a large print area of 2000x2000x2000 mm? That is as much as 8 cubic meters. A standard extruder with a calibrated bar feed of 3.00 or 1.75 mm will not work in this case. The print time for a large part will tend to infinity. In this case, only a granular extruder will do. True, it has its drawbacks, such as reducing the accuracy of the part or a complex, and therefore reducing the reliability of the system for supplying plastic granules. But the printing speed will increase significantly. However, other problems will arise - a completely different blowing system for the printed part will be required to remove a large amount of heat for the polymer to crystallize. Otherwise, the part will be in a semi-liquid state, respectively, we will get a manufacturing defect.

Why is it worth ordering a 3D printer according to the specification?

Let's imagine that you have a specific specification for a machine. Let's say it will be a 3D printer with dimensions of 2000x1000x1000 mm for printing car bumpers. Ordinary polymers with minimal shrinkage are eliminated, because they are quite fusible. There are such well-known materials as nylon and ABS. Nylon for 3D printing is quite expensive, but very durable. Of the minuses - a rather strong shrinkage and poor adhesion to the platform. ABS also shrinks, but much less. Accordingly, when developing a custom-made 3D printer, we prescribe in the TOR a necessarily heated platform, a closed case, and preferably a thermal chamber. To reduce the cost and increase the printing speed, we will recommend an extruder that prints with granules. A hardened steel nozzle resistant to composite materials will not be superfluous.

What are composite polymers - these are materials for 3D printing, in which a filler was introduced to increase strength and reduce shrinkage. It can be fiberglass, chalk or carbon fiber (carbon). In the melt, they are quite abrasive, so steel or ruby nozzles are used for long-term printing.

High-temperature 3D printers for printing PSU, PPSU, PES

According to the wishes of our customers, we have expanded the range of manufactured devices - now we have high-temperature 3D printers for printing with materials such as polysulfone, polyethersulfone, polyphenylenesulfone. In this case, when ordering, a steel nozzle for composite materials, a temperature-controlled chamber to reduce polymer shrinkage and increase sintering properties must be indicated in the technical specifications.
