Create detailed furniture for articulated dolls with photopolymer Zortrax Inkspire
Articulated dolls are so beautiful and unique that they often become collectibles. True masterpieces settled not only in old mansions, but also became the object of close attention of Flickr and Instagram users. Polish architect Marzec Bachorzewska, who has been collecting ball-joint dolls for more than a decade, boasts an extensive collection of art objects. But the exposition would not be complete without the appropriate entourage, so the collector became interested in creating miniature furniture and other interior elements for her dolls.
Marta Baciorzewska appreciated the uniqueness of the articulated dolls. The designer claims that the appearance of a collectible item depends on its future owner. Therefore, each little beauty needs to select an individual interior that conveys in detail the features of the hostess. All furnishings, furniture, entourage items should be made as close as possible to the original.
According to the collector, without a 3D printer, reproducing such accurate mock-ups would be extremely time consuming. But now, having mastered the intricacies of additive manufacturing, Mrs. Bachorzewska begins work with the creation of digital prototypes of furniture and design elements. The CAD tools she was familiar with for architectural design didn't meet the designer's requirements, so she suggests using 3D-Studio or Blender.
After working out the digital models, Martha moves on to the manufacturing stage. This is where Zortrax Inkspire photopolymer 3D printers come in handy, ensuring the right precision and optimal layer height for building miniature scale instances. The device maintains a constant high speed and accuracy of sample production. The device is mobile, does not take up much space on the working surface, and is designed for growing small items. The smallest objects that proprietary equipment can print are invisible without special equipment. Zortrax Inkspire is equipped with a color touch screen with an extremely clear interface.
With a simple and robust design, the device is durable and easy to use.
Benefits of a photopolymer 3D printer:
- micro precision - the smallest cube printed on Zortrax has dimensions of 50x50x25 microns;
- stable speed maintained at every stage of product building;
- open system: compatible with materials that cure at 405 nm;
- mass production capability - one Inkspire machine is able to print from 50 to 80 small parts in an hour and a half.
The printer's UV light ensures that each layer is treated with the same amount of UV power to cure the resin evenly. The equipment of the Polish brand eliminates the imperfections visible in close-up photographs and does not require long-term image processing. The designer was especially pleased with the prompt support service, which speeds up the solution of current problems, and the extensive knowledge base available on the websites and in the numerous instructions of the company.
The software has several options to optimize the result. When printing with photopolymer, an important rule applies - parts with a deviation of more than 30 degrees need support. Usually these are tree-like "branches" with a minimum touch point to the layout being made. When working with Inkspire, additional UV exposure times can be set for support structures to make them easier to remove.
Materials used
The Zortrax Inkspire 3D printer is a working tool in demand in the aerospace and mechanical engineering industries, in dentistry and in the arts. The equipment is suitable for making detailed figurines and small limited edition souvenirs. Resin 3D printing is a technology suitable for sectors where very small but extremely detailed models are required.
3D Zortrax Inkspire UV LCD material was suitable for creating furniture models to scale. The material is suitable for printing elastic products and things that are strong in bending and stretching under increased loads.
A collection of branded consumables allows you to quickly adjust key print settings.
After the objects are arranged in three-dimensional format, they are cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner. For her models, the collector chose a material for miniature dioramas - white Zortrax Resin BASIC photopolymer, suitable for various post-processing techniques. A significant part of the polishing is carried out on surfaces in contact with the supporting structures, after which the products are covered with varnish and several layers of paint.
The last step is to add original details (upholstery, design elements) for a more natural look. When the furnishing is completed, all interior components for the ball joint doll are in the style chosen by the customer.
Marta Bačorzewska plans to develop her business and the Inkspire polymer 3D printer will become a necessary support in her creative work. Since polymers can be used to create jewelry, the designer does not exclude the development of a collection of jewelry for his dolls.
