Water washable resin: advantages and disadvantages
Over the past years a wide range of water-washable resins were introduced to the market to make resin printing more consumer friendly. But what are the advantages of these water-washable resins and how do they compare to other resins?
Post-processing of 3D-printed resin parts
One of the biggest disadvantages of resin 3D-printing is the post-processing. Supports need to be removed and parts need to be washed and cured to achieved proper end properties. Post-process Liqcreate resins are already described in an earlier article. In short these can be divided in two mayor steps. Cleaning and curing. Water-washable resins have their advantage in the cleaning step.
When comparing different washing methods it can be summarized to three main methods. Cleaning in IPA/Ethanol, resin cleaner or water. In this article we will discuss the main differences and advantages and disadvantages of these methods.
The biggest advantage of cleaning in IPA/ethanol is that after cleaning these solvent evaporate very fast and leave a solvent free clean surface. The biggest disadvantage is that these solvent are considered to be dangerous goods and leave a nasty smell. Because of the volatility and the flammability it is also not advised to use these solvents directly in an ultrasonic cleaners.
Advantages and disadvantages of water-washable resin
The advantage of water-washable resin is that it can be used in an ultrasonic cleaner and it leaves no smell or vapor. It is very important that the residual water is not thrown in the drain because it contains resin. Water washable resin often contains raw materials that can be harmful to aquatic life. Therefor the washing method would be similar to using a resin cleaner. A second and perhaps more important disadvantage is that the liquid resin is in water soluble. Making the printed part also be sensitive to water and most likely can’t be used in a wet or highly moist environment. At Liqcreate we test all our materials on solvent and chemical compatibility including water. More information about this can be found here. There is one main disadvantages often reported by users of water washable resin. Printed parts can crack over time due to water uptake and swelling, even in (dry) office environments.

As an alternative Liqcreate offers a non-toxic, non-volatile resin cleaner instead of a water-washable resin. This is because the raw materials used in our resins are specifically selected to reach the best properties. Changing these raw materials for water soluble materials would be a trade-off in regard to environmental hazards, mechanical properties, quality and long term-stability of the end parts.
Team Liqcreate wish you happy printing. If there are any questions or remarks, feel free to contact us at [email protected] any time.

Eryone water washable resin for photopolymer 3D printers
This resin is designed for most photopolymer 3D printers.
The key feature of this resin is the ability to remove residues after printing the main part with plain water, without the use of chemicals. In this case, the printed part itself can be thrown into water and it will not dissolve.
Volume 0.5l.
Delivery is made from the Russian warehouse.
A little about photopolymer LCD printing:
This technology is quite new and cheap to produce. It is also called DUP or mSLA.
The technology works thanks to a powerful ultra-bright UV LED that evens out the glow - a Fresnel lens and directly to the matrix of the IPS LCD panel, which forms a white outline and a black background of the light layer. The black color does not pass through the radiation, and the white light is freely exposed, due to which a hardening layer of the material is formed. The model is built layer by layer.
Now color LCD screens have been replaced by monochrome ones and this is a big breakthrough in technology. A monochrome display lasts much longer, and the print speed with such a display is much higher. Thanks to the monochrome matrix, the exposure of the layer was reduced to an average of 2 seconds. nine0003
There are 8 colors of this resin in total, but only 7 are currently available. 500 ml
Supplied in an unmarked cardboard box.
Resin jar is securely packaged.
I ordered gray. The label indicates the manufacturer, color, volume and type of resin. nine0003
There are also instructions and recommendations.
The mouth of the jar is very large. This is very handy for draining the resin back into the jar.
Printing parameters with this resin for different printers.
My exposure time on Photon Mono is slightly different, but more on that below.
For the test I will use 2 popular models from Harz labs and 3DSLA.
In all models, I used the default layer of 0.05mm.
The first layer I have perfectly keeps with a light exposure of 23s. nine0006
Harzlabs prints in just 12 minutes.
Illumination time from 1.8 to 3s. This timing was not chosen by chance, I was guided by the table above from the manufacturer.
Test model size 30x30x2mm
Pencil for sizing. Immediately I apologize for the dust on the models.
Exposure 1.8s
Exposure 2s
Exposure 2.5s
Exposure 3s
nine0006
The second test model will be a cube from 3DSLA with dimensions 10x10x10mm.
Layer 0.05mm.
The best quality was obtained with an illumination of 2s.
Another test, exposure time 2s, layer 0.05mm.
Now started printing Wonder Woman.
In the end, it should turn out like this
In the meantime, I have this)

Pretty good resin for the money. Residues after printing are perfectly removed with water. There is a smell, but it is not directly sharp and caustic. Water-washable resins would be good for teaching photopolymer printing in schools or some circles, because alcohol is not required.

A short review of Elegoo photopolymer
Recently in the comments I mentioned that Anycubic has no competitors in the cost of polymers, to which andron_h countered by referring to Elegoo polymers. Screenshots for Enikubik and Elegu polymers today:
Apparently, even without coupons, Elegu is 300 rubles cheaper :)
After his comment, I became interested and ordered a liter of black and a liter of red transparent for testing. Then it came out to me at 2035 rubles per liter, taking into account the coupon. (This radish also tempted me to polymers from WEISTEK - ABS Like and Tough, I also ordered 0.5 liters per sample, but it's a long wait :)) )
The courier brought the parcel seems to be 5-6 days after the order. And just the other day I got to testing them for exposure time and sharpness :)
Briefly for the impatient - the resin is even better than Kubikovskaya, but with a slightly longer exposure time (by 20-30 percent). You can take it :)
On the pictures from the site the bottle with polymer looks black, but in reality it is brown - the same color as the Enikubik bottles. The packaging is the same as Enikubik's - a sealed bag, an air bag and a box, only a box made of coated cardboard with color printing. nine0006
Otherwise, if you peel off the labels, it's just twins with Ekubikov resin :) Whether to trust her is another question :) He is much less strong and sharp in Elegu than in Enikubik. Here, put two bottles of polymers Elegu and Enikubik - by smell you can immediately distinguish who is who :)
Although I don't pay much attention to smells when printing either on FDM or photopolymer, but with Cubikov's polymer I noticed a smell if you enter the room where printing is in progress, but with Elegu I didn't catch myself on it. Although I printed them just nothing.
And now the testing itself.
Resin Black
First ran the Harzlabs quick flat plate test as usual, it only takes 15-25 minutes to print and gives a first impression of exposure time. Layer 0.04 mm. I set the time in the test from 4 to 7 seconds, assuming that this resin was poured from the same barrel as the Enikubikovskaya, for which I have the optimal time for such a layer on a black polymer 4-5 seconds. But it turned out that this resin was from another barrel :) The optimal time for black resin was 6-7 seconds. nine0006
Hint : Clicking on a photo will open the portal's standard photo browser window. If you right-click in it in the center of the photo and select "Open image in a new tab", then a photo of the original size will be opened in a new tab, which can be viewed in detail :)
Layer 0.04 mm, exposure 4 sec:
Layer 0.04 mm, exposure 5 sec:
0.04 mm layer, 6 sec exposure:
0. 04 mm layer, exposure 7 sec:
Very worthy. XY detail is excellent for such a cheap resin.
After that, you can try to print a standard cube from 3DSLA, which has been printed for an hour or more. It already shows the exact exposure time and vertical resolution. I also printed with a layer of 0.04 mm, also 4 pieces, but I already set the time a little more - from 5 to 8 seconds. For the photo, I chose a cube with a print time of 7 seconds, as the most optimal result. nine0006
Very, very good. Vertical slots were printed up to 0.2 mm inclusive. With horizontal ones, everything is sadder - in the thin part, only up to 0.5, and in the thick part, only 1 mm at all. But I did not expect something excellent in vertical resolution, still the resin is one of the cheapest :)
To better see, I took a picture with a strip of paper inside: that I have visited. I took two photos of test plates made of polymers from different manufacturers in the light. nine0006
First photo, from left to right: Harzlabs Model, Elegoo, FunToDo Deep Black, Hardlight Tough:
Phantudou's resin name looks like some kind of mockery, looking at the result :)) Although it is really a deeper black color in reflection , than others. But in the light it leaves much to be desired ... And the rate of settling of black pigment in it is simply a record. My model with a height of 100 mm did not have time to finish printing before the pigment had already settled on the film. nine0006
Second photo, Anycubic, Elegoo again (for comparison with the previous photo), custom Ameralabs, standard Ameralabs:
Custom Amera is generally out of competition, it does not shine through at all, but the standard one is not far behind Elegoo either.
Red resin
Again, first a quick test with the test plate. The layer is still the same - 0.04 mm. I also set the time in the test from 4 to 7 seconds.
0.04 mm layer, 4 sec exposure:
0. 04 mm layer, 5 sec exposure:
0.04 mm layer, 6 sec exposure:
0.04 mm layer, 7 sec exposure:
Again, a very good result. The optimum is the same as for black at 6-7 seconds.
And a 3DSLA cube with the same 0.04 mm layer and 7 sec time per layer.
The result is approximately the same as black resin. Same excellent XY detail and mediocre Z detail. Surprisingly, I expected Z detail to be worse than black. nine0006
And one more thing. When I broke off these "indicators" connecting them from the plates (they serve me so that later on the plate you can see in what position it was and, accordingly, what exposure time it had):
then I was surprised the tenacity with which these sticks did not want to break off. And after a full backlight and a photo session, I tried to break the test plates from Elegu and Enikubik. So, subjectively, it seemed to me that the Elegu polymer is noticeably stronger than Enikubik.
