Pinball fan uses 3D printed parts to customize pinball machines – Mezel Mods

3Ders. org recently featured Mezel Mods in an article about 3D printing. Here is an excerpt from the original which can be found here.

Just two decades ago, you could not go anywhere without being confronted by a pinball machine. Though they have been partly pushed out of sight by digital technology, the world of pinball is still very much alive among a small group of dedicated fans and collectors. And as Tim Mezel shows, they do not spurn modern technologies, but embrace them. In late 2013, Mezel founded Mezel Mods together with his wife Kristin, and they have become a huge hit selling custom-made 3D printed modifications for pinball machines that are no longer being manufactured.

Mezel Mods is a fantastic business that shows exactly what can be achieved if you combine your passions with modern making technologies. After being infected with a love for pinball while working for Intel, Mezel began collecting pinball machines and was confronted with the same problems as the rest of the community. Right now there’s only one pinball manufacturer left in the world, a company called Stern, while many existing machines from a few decades ago are no longer supported by anyone. So if a machine is incomplete, or part of the playing field breaks down, you have a problem.

Top 10 3D printed models for the week

News

Last week, our makers were repairing cars, flirting with evil spirits, successfully fighting the ZhEK, and generally printing and drawing with all their might. Let's take a look at the most interesting works according to the 3Dtoday editors:

10. Paintball mask

Alexey, a.k.a. Aleks_Krsk, decided on a large-scale project - 3D printing of a prototype of a protective mask for a paintball game. The accessory was modeled in Blender, taking into account the structure of the author's face, and then printed in several parts from ABS plastic on a PICASO Designer 3D printer. Details on the author's blog.

9. Car handle

This time, 3Delo had to repair the Kia Shuma door handle. Judging by the poetic presentation of the master printers, it was not possible to get a spare part, and the price tags for such parts, as a rule, cause slight indignation. The owner tried to glue and even bolt the part, but without much success. As a result, a replacement was modeled and printed. Read more on the 3Delo blog.

8. Caliper modification

Every real printer has a caliper in his household. Semyon, a. k.a. Gas, faced a rather common problem: the battery runs out quickly, especially since the tool does not have an auto-off function, and it can be difficult to find a replacement. The solution was a 3D-printed case for a conventional AA battery. How it's done, read here.

7. Sensor Housing for Home Weather Station

Recently, REC launched the new Eternal plastic for printing durable products that are resistant to extreme temperatures and UV light. In other words, this is a material for outdoor use. Application example provided by Dmitry, a.k.a. Dagov, who improved the home weather station. As it turned out, in the summer the Chinese device warmed up a lot in the sun because of the black case and gave incorrect readings, and in the winter it froze at all. Dmitry decided to move the sensor into a new protective housing made of white Eternal, and move the freezing batteries inside the room. How it's done, read here.

6. Thermometer with clip

- It's cold in our apartment.

- Insulate windows and doors. The coolant is at normal temperature. According to the regulations.

Familiar words? Nikolay, a.k.a. Sowinj, refused to give in to the ZhEK-ripper and made a case for a thermometer with a mount on a central heating pipe. You can't argue with numbers! Details on this link, and models for pipes of different diameters can be found here and here.

5. Posed Cartoon Girl

A gift for my daughter, printed by Evgeny, a.k.a. Sidoy-Nvkz. The model is made of PLA plastic produced by FDplast without post-processing, except for the removal of supports. A link to the original model can be found here.

4. Antique clocks

Old things can not only be given a second life, but also made better. An excellent example is the unsightly Soviet-style table clock, converted by the 3D studio from scratch into a quite nice “old” chronometer. The jewelry is made of PLA plastic produced by REC on a Delta Prism Mini 3D printer. Post-processing included sanding, priming, painting and varnishing. Details on Brideane4ka's blog.

3. Lemarchand's box

Although Igor, a.k.a. ReviZorro, and not a fan of horror in general, the film Hellraiser filled him so much that it was decided to make a replica of the famous puzzle or Lemarchand's Box. The structure consists of a PLA-printed cube covered with patterned Laywood composite panels. The box performs a strictly decorative function. However, this is for the best. Details at this link.

2. Protoss Pylon Lamp

How to please a friend on his birthday? If he is a gamer, then props from his favorite game are perfect. The theme for the gift was chosen by the hero of the occasion, who is well acquainted with the works of Igor, a.k.a. CraVeg is a protoss pylon from the StarCraft universe, and even with a backlight. The glowing crystal is printed in clear plastic from Filamentarno and smoothed with limonene. After installing the LEDs and the Micro USB charging connector, we got such a night lamp. Read more on the author's blog.

1. Christmas cockerel

And finally, a bright holiday decoration created by the Grievousalien organic 3D printer equipped with a Myriwell RP-100B 3D pen extruder. The artist spent 4-5 hours of work and 88 grams of plastic to make a model 25 cm long. Details on Safi's blog at this link.

Designing and printing a paintball mask... (actually it turned out to be a Sith from Star Wars).

Hi all! Having printed all sorts of small things like figurines, small parts, and other things, I finally took on the first more or less large-scale project. It was decided to make a model of a paintball mask, for further refinement of the model, and molding it from plastic under pressure. I previously contacted my friend who is engaged in the manufacture of paraphernalia made of plastic and fiberglass for cosplay and role-playing games, in order to clarify all the details of further copying of the prototype. Everything seems to be clear ... Let's go! Opened Blender, and began to howl the mask according to the proportions of the face. I will not describe the process itself. In general, this mask turned out like this:

The entire mask did not fit into Picaso 3D Designer. Using the Netfabb program, the model was cured and cut into 3 parts - forehead, eyes, and chin. I started printing with the eyes to make sure that I did not miscalculate with the sizes. It turned out exactly what I expected:

While printing, I encountered such a problem: one side of the model was peeling off the table all the time. The issue was resolved rather quickly though. When buying a printer, it came with a 'special spray' for adhesion, which turned out to be regular hairspray. I drove to the nearest store, and bought a bottle of the most powerful varnish. Having generously varnished the printed table, the problem miraculously disappeared. After the eyes, I decided to print the chin part. 6 hours of typing and the chin is ready:

Apparently, due to the shrinkage of the plastic, the parts of the mask did not adhere to each other a little inaccurately. I had to adjust the gap when gluing parts with ABS juice. The composition turned out to be of the consistency of a very thick paste, and was excellent for sealing thin cracks:

After drying, the joints were treated with sandpaper (P200 and P400). And finally, on the third day, I printed the frontal part:

Putting everything together, the following came out:

Now about the settings for printing: since it was a mask prototype, and not a finished product, I chose not 100% filling. ABS material.

Eyes printed at 0.25mm layer height. and print speed 60mm./sec. The percentage of filling is 70%. Printing time about 7 hours.

Chin printed at 0.25mm layer height. and print speed 60mm./sec. Fill percentage 80% Print time about 6 hours.

Forehead printed at 0.25mm layer height. and print speed 60mm./sec. Fill percentage 25% Print time about 7 hours.

As a result, it seemed to me that this was not a paintball mask, but a mask of some Sith from the Star Wars universe.

Mask left to putty and sand. After making the casting mold, the prototype can be modified, painted, and kept as a keepsake :-)

Thank you for reading the article to the end (or at least scrolling through it). If someone has questions - write, I will be glad to answer them.
