Top 10 Most Stunning 3D Printed Jewelry Pieces 2022

Jewelry has always been associated with class – from the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London to the jewelry-clad ‘flapper’ dresses of the 1920s. Diamonds are a a girl’s best friend, and precious metals are the perfect vessels to encase them. And now 3D printed jewelry takes this elegance to another level, offering new and intricate geometries that could not be created before via previous methods, elevating the jewelry game to new heights.

Though plastic printing is widely affordable now through desktop FDM 3D printers, less is known about its metal applications. In actuality, 3D printing and jewelry go hand-in-hand, with specialized 3D software for jewelry and specialized 3D printers already on the market. Since this is such an emerging industry, we created our ranking of the 10 best 3D printed jewelry pieces from innovative companies all over the world.

3D Printed Jewelry Manufacturing Process: Lost Wax Casting & DMLS

The most common process for creating jewelry using 3D printing is lost wax casting.

This process involves firstly 3D printing your desired jewelry model in wax (similar to resins used in stereolithography). These wax molds are then encased in plaster (known as the investment), and heated to a very high temperature to create an impression. After this, the impression is then filled with a liquid precious metal (such as gold or silver) to create the finished piece of 3D printed jewelry.

This method allows for a variety of precious metals to be used. The most commonly used metals include brass, stainless steel, bronze, silver, gold, and platinum. However, plastics such as Nylon are occasionally used for pieces such as rings.

Before sending the 3D model of the pendant to work, I decided to check its cross section, found that in some places the words did not touch the main frame, besides, they were too thick, and this would affect the strength of the product and its weight.

All the shortcomings were corrected and the model was sent for growth from wax and further casting.

After some time, I received an email saying that the model is not displayed well, I had to re-save and “treat” the model. Finally, after a week of anxious waiting, they wrote to me that I could pick up the 'pendant'.

After carefully examining the pendant and reading several articles about processing after casting, what was my surprise that the obligatory operation - tumbling, was not performed. Unfortunately, the casting company did not even hint at this and only offered polishing and fine-tuning the “words” by hand, which, from the very beginning, I did not like, because I wanted to minimize manual labor. Almost losing hope, and having lost faith in the success of the whole enterprise, I turned to a local jewelry workshop in order to perform first tumbling 'on needles', and then polishing. A couple of days later, taking a shiny and beautiful pendant, I thought that I could finally give it to my girlfriend, but the master again lowered me to the ground, it turned out that the pendant was cast from a brass alloy, which is why it will begin to fade and, possibly, even “turn green”, because contains copper. At first, I did not attach much importance to this, however, when a month passed, the color change was already obvious - the pendant oxidized and noticeably faded.

I had to take the gift back for a while. First, polish the pendant and then coat it with a thin layer of clear nail polish. This decision was not easy for me, ideally, it was possible to order rhodium plating, gilding and, in extreme cases, silvering, however, electroplating is an expensive pleasure, especially compared to the cost of growth and casting. I hope that my experience of making a pendant as a gift will be useful to someone. The pendant turned out to be about 25 mm in size. Weight about 8 g. Material - brass.

P.s: I was interested in repeating the experience of the French, who developed a whole service for the production of personalized pendants love.by.me.com. Who knows, maybe someday they will be able to release them all over the world? But, unfortunately, recently, their site is not available. I hope that they will restore their service soon and will not be offended that I borrowed their design for my gift. Thank you for your attention.
