The company issued warnings to several 3D printing instruction websites that offered Honda-compatible parts for download.
No reprinting: Honda has required several websites to remove print files for parts that could be used in Honda vehicles, according to a report by The Drive.
For example, it is reported that all parts with the name Honda in the description have been removed from the Printables 3D printing repository from 3D printer manufacturer Prusa.
Czech 3D printer manufacturer Prusa, which also operates the Printables portal, now wants to intensify negotiations with brand manufacturers.
“We were required to remove all models that use the term “Honda” in their name, on the model itself or on any of the various brands and logos owned by Honda,” says Prusa.
This also applies to models where the term "Honda" is only part of the file name, as the corporation considers this an infringement of its trademark and patent rights.
According to the report, parts removed include speaker mounts, car key housings, hood latches, wiper covers, roof latch handles, and the like.
Many parts were reportedly missing the Honda logo. Prusa confirmed to The Drive that it had received a warning letter from Honda and had removed all 3D models bearing the brand.
There have been numerous mentions on Reddit by other users that Honda parts have been removed from the 3D repositories.
On the Printables forum, a Prusa employee wrote that other sites hosting 3D models also received a similar takedown request from Honda.
Consequently, all instructions that include the name of the car manufacturer had to be removed. This applies even when the brand is only included in the file name.
Spare parts are a good source of income for automakers
According to the information provided by the portal operator, the automaker's lawyers acted in great detail. They not only sent a general instruction, but also attached a list of all entries to be deleted.

However, from a legal point of view, it is not entirely clear to what extent some parts can simply be reprinted. The situation is complicated by the fact that brand manufacturers approach this issue in completely different ways.
This can be illustrated by the example of the automotive industry. Ford, for example, publishes its own printing instructions and also supports the scene in other ways.
Honda, on the other hand, launched a legal offensive and is taking action against websites that distributed instructions for printing its parts.
