3D Printed Dollhouse Accessories - dadand.com
My daughter and I share the love of creating. While my version of creation might have me covered in woodchips or grease, my daughter is keen to painting, coloring and modeling clay.
I guess, in a way, one could call us “Makers.”
But I’ve always envisioned a “maker” as someone who is building circuits, programming stuff and printing 3D something-or-others.
Well, if that definition is true, we’re well on our way to being makers ourselves.
More on that in a moment.
The DollhouseLast year I built a giant dollhouse for my daughter’s room. It’s for those large collectible American Girl® dolls. Full of furniture, fixtures, lamps and other luxuries, it provides hours of good ‘ol fashioned pretend play.
As my wife and daughter found items to furnish it with, one thing bothered me. So many of the items were out of scale with the dolls.
I know. They’re dolls.
But there were these giant picture frames. Way-too-small silverware. Tiny little plates.
UGH. It just bothered me.
3D Desktop ComputerSo a few months back I applied to try out a new PC that can scan 3D objects, turn them into digital models, and then print your model on a 3D printer.
I thought it would be perfect to try and make our own dollhouse accessories, in proper scale, and a whole lot more.
So here it is. The HP Sprout.
The HP Sprout is an all-in-one PC with a cool touchscreen and a giant touch mat that will make you push the mouse aside and use your hands to create. There’s an overhead projection/scanning system that can scan 2D and 3D objects—it’s like you can grab something from the real world, create with it digitally, then bring it back to the real world again.
For those of you that want specs, the Sprout has an Intel® Core™ i7 Processor, 1TB of storage and a Windows OS. For more info, check out the HP Sprout website.
The HP Sprout works great with Dremel 3D Idea Builder 3D printer.
Making Dollhouse AccessoriesSo our first project together was making a picture frame, and a picture, for her doll’s nightstand. We found a frame we liked around the house and decided to 3D scan it using the Sprout, then scale it down for her American Girl® doll.
And since my daughter would like to go to Paris someday, we thought her doll should have a photo of her visit to Paris. So we scanned her doll in 2D and created the picture for the frame.
Here’s the picture frame coming out of the printer.
Here’s the finished frame with picture on the dollhouse nightstand. If you want to see how we did this, check out the video below.
It was something awesome to do together, and she loved creating with her hands and the computer. And you never know, with this technology, my little maker might be 3D printing spacecraft at NASA someday.
Since my girl is a little camera shy, I made a video recapping what we did. Check it out:
What’s next?
I’m sure this isn’t the last thing we make for the dollhouse. And my boys are already coming up with about a million things to 3D print. Cars, army men, LEGO accessories…it sounds like playtime but watching them interact with the Sprout is obviously getting them ahead with technology.
So stay tuned for more projects. I’ll be creating a post and some downloadable plans for the dollhouse soon. And I’ve been making some 3D models in Adobe Illustrator that I want to try and print out using the Dremel 3D Idea Builder.
So thanks to @HP for letting us have a go around with the Sprout. Again, check out the Sprout or see what others have created in the Sprout Creator Gallery.
Here’s a pic to pin.

Paper dolls - 3D constructor for the education system
Home / History of constructors / Paper dolls
Each of us has ever seen, and perhaps even played in childhood with a set of paper clothes for a doll. Usually this toy was sold in the form of a booklet or a bag with sheets of thick paper, on which a painted doll figure and interchangeable outfits were printed. The elements of clothing and the doll itself were cut out with scissors. Various costumes and dresses were attached to the model with the help of protruding strips - valves that had to be bent from the back of the doll.
With a certain degree of conditionality, the prototype of the designer of paper dolls can be considered kimonos cut out of paper, which were worn on the figures of the home pantheon of gods in Japan around 800 BC . Clothes made of paper and leather were used to dress ritual figurines in Indonesia as early as at the beginning of the first millennium . In Europe of the 18th century paper dolls were used by court fashion designers and tailors in order to demonstrate in color to the customer a model of a particular dress, wig or shoe.
Flat designer - a set of clothes for a paper doll. Our time
A paper doll became a children's toy at the beginning of of the 19th century . The creation of the American company McLoughlin Brothers , which produces printed products, actually became the first developing children's paper constructor and the prototype of most modern flat designers. In 1831 in New York they began to sell a series of paper ladies with outfits printed in paint on fairly thick paper at a price of 5 to 12 cents, which immediately made them available to a wide range of customers. Since the craft of the tailor was then occupied by men, parents bought this toy for both girls and boys.
Clothes set for a real-life character, silent film actress Norma Tallmadge from a 1919 women's magazine
New York based McLoughlin Brothers, founded by brothers John and Edmund McLaughlin in 1828 , was a pioneer in color printing of children's books. For a century, it produced a wide range of printed products, including cheap lubok pictures, art books, postcards, paper puzzles, board games, sets of paper soldiers and paper dolls themselves.

By 1920 , when McLaughlin Brothers became the largest toy manufacturer in the United States, the company was acquired by Milton Bradley , a well-known manufacturer of board games. In turn, in 1984 Milton Bradley Co. Acquired by the largest corporation in the gaming industry Hasbro , who managed to preserve and increase all the achievements of outstanding predecessors, including the production of paper dolls. To date, the largest American manufacturer of children's paper dolls is the company Whitman and Golden Co. 1976 Whitman & Golden Calico Cathy Paper Doll Clothes toys for your children. For example, sets from the London company Raphael Tuck & Sons Publishing Co . printed on thick paper, in excellent quality and sold in decorated envelope boxes, with the head of the dolls removed to make it easier to change outfits. The company patented its invention so that competitors could not repeat their success. The company produced both dolls 20-35 cm tall and "postcard" versions that could be cut out or used as postcards.
Raphael Tuck paper dolls, 1894
During the Second World War, no one was engaged in paper dolls, but in the post-war period they flourished, because their parents did not have money for serious toys, and a paper doll could almost afford each. In the Soviet Union, in the era of total shortages, there were also not enough toys, so paper dolls were printed in magazines - children's "Funny Pictures" or adults "Rabotnitsa" and "Peasant woman" , and also sold in the form of sets in kiosks "Soyuzpechat" . In bookstores in 1970-1980 you could find not only self-made paper albums, from which models were assembled with scissors and glue, but also classic paper constructors with interchangeable elements attached to the base with paper flaps.
In 1980 the world-famous dolls Barbie and Ken appeared, and with them small books from which it was possible to cut out figures of the same characters and their stylish clothes. AT 1984 the Guild of Paper Doll Artists (The Original Paper Doll Artists Guild , or briefly OPDAG ) was created, which successfully operates to this day and issues its own magazine for paper doll fans called Paper Doll Studio Magazine .
Classic paper dolls can rightfully be classified as children's construction sets, as they have the main property of such toys - models cut out of paper can not only be assembled, but also disassembled, and their elements can be swapped. They learned to deal with the relative fragility of paper dolls - they are glued to cardboard, pasted over with tape or laminated, and then carefully cut out. A flat paper doll with a bendable base can be placed, while it conditionally turns into a 3D figurine . The advantage of paper doll construction sets is the ability to save space, because, unlike bulky plastic construction sets, they can be stored in a table or in a folder. If the child has drawing skills, he himself can create new items of clothing or other paper accessories for such a doll.
At present, there are two kinds of clothes for paper dolls. The first is the usual white stripes, or flaps, which allow you to attach the costume to the doll in several places. The fixation of clothes of the second type is carried out using thin magnetic strips. This principle can be used to create homemade paper dolls, it is enough to glue a magnet on the back of the figurine, and metal foil to the dresses.
Nowadays, paper dolls are a children's designer of "narrow specialization" - usually girls aged 4 to 8 play with pleasure. As an educational toy, a paper doll instills in a child a sense of taste and harmony, teaches diligence and accuracy, especially if all the elements are cut out by him personally. In addition, this toy gives the child the freedom of creativity, allowing you to design your own elements of clothing.
Interestingly, paper dolls printed in XIX-early XX century are a collector's item, and the price of individual copies of the doll and 3-4 pieces of clothing can reach several thousand dollars .
