3D printing startup partners with $100 billion annual global engineering company

Berlin-based 3D printing software company 3yourmind (now based in London) took a trophy at the Formnext Start-Up event last week Challenge 2016. Now the company intends to join another company with a similar profile - Big Rep, which deals directly with 3D printing, at the Up Lab Berlin Pop in Soho.

The industrialization of 3D printing is a hot topic this year, as evidenced by announcements from 3D Systems, GE, Materialize, Siemens and others.

Founded in 2014, 3yourmind provides "intelligent 3D printing solutions for industry and architecture." Their software can be used by 3D printing companies in the same way as 3D Hubs or Fictiv in San Francisco. Optimization tools for automatic recovery of 3D files are integrated with the software, as are pricing decision mechanisms. The company will also soon offer automated grading for 3D printing in metal. She currently works with thirty 3D printing firms, including 3D Print UK in London.

Mobility project goes Additive

The company launched a "CAD plug-in to simplify 3D printing orders" called 3D Button in March 2015, but since then it has been more focused on the B2B sector. The lab display showed several examples of significant collaborations between 3yourmind and Deutsche Bahn, a $40 billion German railroad company.

As we reported earlier this year, Deutsche Bahn is exploring how 3D printing can revolutionize supply chains and logistics operations. The Deutsche Bahn railway company has train fleets or viaducts on every continent and owns more than $1 billion worth of equipment. Reducing the cost of maintaining and replacing equipment if necessary using 3D printing is included in the Mobility goes Additive project. This will help free up some of the money that was previously spent on these needs.

3yourmind showed two swivel arms to showcase his approach. The more worn part in the picture below is made from iron using traditional methods, while the newer one is 3D printed from 316L stainless steel.

3yourmind does not publicly disclose the name of its 3D printing partner who made this metal part. However, Dr. Hans J. Langer, founder of EOS GmbH Electro-Optical Systems, is a leading investor in the software company and it is EOS that offers 316L stainless steel as a material for 3D printing.

Deutsche Bahn is looking at many areas of its business for more applications for 3D printing, but the certification and qualification process is surprisingly just as long as in the aviation industry. Stefanie Brickwede, Project Manager at Mobility goes Additive, explained during Formnext that the safety requirements for railways may be even stricter than those used in the aerospace industry due to the increased number of passengers and the lack of special safety equipment on trains such as oxygen masks.

In addition to the 3D printed swivel bracket, 3yourmind has also created a heat exchange system for use in electric trains. A study by Deutsche Bahn showed that the annual need for this spare part is only 10 pieces per year, so mass production, which would initially be more cost-effective, will increase storage costs in the future. Creating a part using the SLS 3D printing process will help eliminate these costs and use an “as needed” approach.

3yourmind and Siemens collaboration

In addition, a 3D printed model of a turbine made for Siemens was shown in the laboratory. The model not only shows the small details that can be obtained directly from the 3D printing process, but also provides an opportunity to attract visitors with what seems to be one of the next trends in 3D printing.

Siemens is the largest engineering company in Europe, with a market cap approaching $100 billion and annual revenues of $80 billion. By comparison, General Electric has a market cap of $280 billion and last year's revenue of $116 billion.
