Best Articulated Dragon Models - Flexible In-Situ Printing for 3D Printing - FacFox 3D Printing Service - Knowledge
3D printed articulated dragon models that can be printed on site have become very popular recently. Several TikTok and YouTube videos have gone viral and have attracted attention even from people outside the 3D printing community. Thanks to the small price tags, digital files were sold by the thousands in file stores, breaking the stereotype that 3D printer owners don't want to pay for STL files.
Let's take a look at the best models, mention their creators and find out why such models have become popular. We will also touch on general tips and tricks and slicer settings to reduce the risk of failure when printing such complex objects.
How it all began
First there were traditional 3D printed dragon designs like Arya and Adalind by Louise Driggers. Such dragons have evolved to become highly detailed and intricate, perfect for resin 3D printing figurines.
- Flexible articulate passion. Earlier we wrote an article flexible articulated toys. These low cost, filament prints have been popular for the last decade and we now recommend them to anyone new to 3D printing as a model for training or warm-up. Try T-Rex and other creatures.
We would say that the closest ancestor of today's popular highly detailed articulated dragons is Benchy4Life's Flexi Dragon. This model with two separate wings is a very popular model with about 500 models on Thingiverse.

Why are dragons a popular choice for 3D printing?
Needless to say, dragons are one of the most beloved mythical creatures. Many books have been written and many films made to show these magnificent creatures in every possible form. Here are the main reasons for the popularity of dragons in the 3D printing community: - Variety of designs. If real creatures have certain traits/characteristics that cannot be changed, then with a mystical creature such as a dragon, the imagination can run wild. Take a look at the collection of Cinderwing3D themed articulated dragons.
- Technical reason. One of the main reasons print-in-place articulated dragons have become so popular is technical - you can't injection mold them and mass-produce them cheaply. Only for now. Maybe eventually there will be some kind of collapsible option, "connecting together.

This particular model is an exceptional success story never seen before in the 3D printing community. 40k paid downloads as of this writing with thousands of physical models sold on Etsy, eBay, Amazon and possibly other platforms. This model has become a kind of breaking stereotypes. 3D printer owners who were thought to be reluctant to pay for STL files have proven otherwise.

We bought an inexpensive digital file to try out the model and to test the Snapmaker 2.0 3D printer A350T. An 18-hour print with well-tuned settings was fine for us. We now have a cute Amolen Bronze PLA dragon. It must be admitted that after testing several similar dragons, Javier's model turned out to be the closest to perfection. Even scaled versions print well on both FDM and resin 3D printers.

CinderWing3D Crystal Dragon
We chose Crystal Dragon as one of the best, but we have to mention the whole collection. While some designers try to 3D print ideas from different themes, Cinderwing3D has only built a brand around articulated, in-place printed dragons. At the time of writing this post, they have seven themed dragons in their collection: Crystal, Forest, Rose (Valentine's Day), Empty Sea, Flying Kite, Lucky Clover (St. Patrick's Day), and Easter Dragons. As we see them covering all producer-friendly events, we'll be looking into the Halloween dragon model. We are especially looking forward to the special version for the glow-in-the-dark filament.

Imperial Dragon by Flexi Factory
Dan Sopala and his Flexi Factory brand have long been leaders in Cults' flexible 3D printing department. It was obvious that after the viral popularity of flexible dragons and the appearance of many new models, Dan would come up with his own version. And a few months later, flexible printing in place, Imperial Dragon, was published. Compared to competitors, Dan's model has a great unique feature - it can take a graceful position. It is worth noting the brilliant idea implemented in the design by merging joints 5, 6 and 7.

This model is of medium difficulty printing. Needless to say, a perfect bed grip is a MUST, or even tight if your 3D printer is struggling. Proper cooling is also very important, as there are 80 curved spikes on the back of the dragon. If the cooling is insufficient, the individual spikes will deform slightly and may catch on the moving extruder.
As a result, layer shifting or separation of the joint from the printing platform can occur. Z-hope is also the setting for the game. Read more about general settings later in this article.
How to Print - FDM 3D Printer General Settings
- Bed Sticking. We cannot emphasize enough that adhesion to the bed plays one of the main roles. For example, McGyBeer's Flexi Dragon has 44 different connections per bed. Even if one fails to stay in place in the middle of a print, it can cause a major glitch and it is highly likely that a layer shift will occur. If your printer platform doesn't have perfect adhesion, try using rafts.
- Overcoming. Articulated parts depend on a good connection. There should be no slack, especially for scaled models, as connections can break. - Speed. The slower the better, especially for the first layer. 30 mm/s - Deformation. Most dragons have scales or horns sticking out.
And if buckling occurs, then the nozzle has a chance to catch on the slightly raised part, detach the joint and cause the layer to shift.
All models featured in this article have many brands published by other manufacturers. It is interesting to look at the choice of thread and the general settings that have worked well for them. Good luck printing!
How to Print - Resin 3D Printer Settings
As far as we know, McGyBeer's scaled articulated dragon model can be printed with medium/high volume font on resin 3D printers such as Mono X, M3 Plus, Saturn, etc. We highly recommend watching Uncle Jesse's video on the subject.
