The School of Architecture and Design is proud to offer 18 Prusa I3MK3S+ FDM 3D printers which are available to students within the School of Architecture and Design through 3DPrinterOS! In the coming months, we will be announcing several other significant additions to our school’s lab as well.

* please note, the usable dimensions may be slightly smaller depending on your slicing settings, such as utilizing a raft / brim.

materials

The School of Architecture + Design offers PLA (polylactic acid) material in a limited number of colors. PLA is easily printed, biodegradable, does not off-gas, and is reasonably strong. This material is a great choice for representational models as well as functional parts that do not require high mechanical strength.

While not necessary, please use this handy template file to help you scale and layout your parts for 3D-printing. Please note the base-unit is millimeters.

Additive Technologies Lab – policies

academic, personal, and professional projects:
Academic projects [for class and research] are always prioritized. Personal projects are allowed [if not encouraged] but they must not impact the labs capacity to support academic projects. Personal projects are printed when all projects before them have been processed first. Professional projects [anything for-profit or on behalf of an employer] are not allowed.

submitting multiple prints:
When multiple print-jobs are queued by the same user, those jobs will be queued to a single printer and printed in succession.

frequently asked questions

How do I gain access to the Additive Technologies Lab resources?
In order to gain access to the School of Architecture and Design’s fleet of additive fabrication hardware you will first need to complete the 3D-printing + 3DPrinterOS training module which is available on Brightspace.

Where is the lab located / where can I pickup my print?
The Additive Technologies Lab is located at Annex-North 003. Completed prints can be picked on the wire rack just outside the entry door.

How much does it cost?
Basic desktop 3D-printing in PLA is free to all within the School of Architecture and Design.

When will my print be run and how long will it take?
When you submit your print, it is submitted to our print queue. Prints are run on a first come, first serve basis during normal lab hours. If all printers are in use, your print will be started when one becomes available. If a print is submitted outside of lab hours it will not be run until the labs are open. Our staff are often multi-tasking and managing multiple lab spaces simultaneously; This may mean that it could take up to a few hours to see your print started.

How long it will take is highly dependent on the scale/complexity of your model, but typically a print submitted in the morning should be ready for pickup the next business day. You will also receive an email from 3dprinterOS letting you know your when your print has been started, and later when it has been completed.
