3ders.org - Microsoft & Warner Bros offer 3D printer blueprint for [The Hobbit] 'Key to Erebor'

Dec.2, 2013

To support the 13th December release of The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug, Microsoft and Warner Bros announced the launch of a new cross-platform campaign and are offering a free 3D printer blueprint of The Key of Erebor from the film.

The ad campaign will run across Windows 8, MSN, Xbox 360, with an interactive, deep-dive into the film, including information about key characters, events and artefacts from the movie, actor biographies, behind-the-scenes videos and desktop wallpapers available for download.

The most interesting part is a 3D printer blueprint. The campaign will also offer Hobbit fans a free blueprint download for a 3D-printed model of "The Key to Erebor" – a major artefact in the film's plot. Fans will be invited to produce their very own collectable memorabilia from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug for the cost of the print. The download will become available on the day the film is released: 13th December 2013.

Owen Sagness, General Manager for Microsoft Advertising & Online UK, says: "By offering fans a blueprint for a 3D model of one of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug's 'key' artefacts, we're providing a genuinely valuable and unique experience that puts the consumer first, while continuing to deliver for the client and push the boundaries of what is creatively possible using new technology. "

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug: An interview with Peter Jackson

The hope of all New Zealand cinema.

Peter, tell us about New Zealand. You once said that you flew in a helicopter over New Zealand - how did this help you look at it from a new perspective? Please comment .

Peter Jackson : Well, flying in a helicopter is an unusual thing, not every one of us gets to fly one at least once in a lifetime. For the first time in my life, I flew in a helicopter when we were selecting locations for the filming of The Lord of the Rings. Unexpectedly for myself, I began to spend seven to eight hours a day in a helicopter, and this is quite a lot. We could say, "Oh, let's sit here," and land at any point. We have been to very remote places. I had never seen New Zealand the way I recognized it through these films. It was my chance to learn more about my own country.

What can you say about the country itself? Did you feel any New Zealand influence on the process of making films ?

Jackson : Yes, I felt supported. Everyone treated us very kindly, from government representatives to ordinary people who helped us. It is an amazing feeling when every step you take is supported and approved.

After such support, the last thing in the world is to let these people down. This is a kind of pressure ... There is a sense of national pride involved. Usually, when making a film, this factor does not have to be taken into account. As a rule, everything revolves around the budget - and this put pressure on us too. We were determined to make a movie that would make New Zealanders proud.

What is your opinion about the appearance of the country? I saw Lake Pukaki and literally felt like I was in a movie. A very strange feeling. The lake is simply unique.

Jackson : Well, we had to start from what Tolkien wrote. He wrote mythology for England, for his people. According to him, he imagined the world seven or eight thousand years ago, even before the great empires: Roman, Greek and Egyptian. Before the beginning of the existence of civilizations known to us, there was a period, all records of which are lost. Tolkien decided to transfer the history of this period to paper, create mythology and events. He wrote the work as history, the history of our world.

Naturally, he imagined a European landscape, not a New Zealand one, but it was the original European landscape. The European landscape before Europe was fully formed. New Zealand, in some respects, fits that description almost perfectly. This land gives a sense of primitiveness, danger, grandiosity. All these high mountains, cliffs, rivers. Such a grandiose landscape, and it is still at the stage of formation. This is the very beginning, and we are, as it were, witnesses of its creation. I think he's perfect for Middle-earth.

The second part of the trilogy is always different. It's always something special. What can you say about this movie? Is it similar to "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" or "The Empire Strikes Back" in the sense that it's very different from the rest ?

Jackson : The purpose of the second film is to add complexity, to bring an element of danger into the story as a whole. In the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the unifying element was the task of destroying the ring in the bowels of Mount Doom. At the same time, we know that no one will reach the mountain before the third part. We create one story, while trying to make each film unique.

The theme of this film is the return of the gnomes to their homeland. Will they make it to Erebor? Will they get rid of the dragon? We first learn about the pile of gold under the mountain in the second film, and this factor becomes part of the driving force of the third film - it is not so easy to return your home if it stands on a lake of gold. Many are interested in wealth under the mountain. And there are only thirteen dwarfs to protect him. This problem is revealed in the third film.

We introduce a lot of new characters into the story, they face more challenges. The film is full of complexities and dangers.

And speakers. When I watched the first scene, all I could say was “Wow! » , when viewing the second - “Wow! » , each subsequent scene was more dynamic than the previous one. Did you specifically achieve this effect?

Jackson : Yes.

Did you want this movie to be the most dynamic of all?

Jackson : Yes. You know, when you "push on the gas", you want to reach the very end. All three films are united by one story, which has a certain form.

The first film is in some way the beginning, the plot. The second part is the build-up of dynamics and complexity. The third is the climax. Three acts. We went through the first phase last year, and now we are working on increasing the complexity and pace, which in the third film will result in a climax that the world will see next year.

It's fun. You don't have to start telling the story all over again. You just pick up where you left off because everyone's supposed to have watched the first part, so just bam! – and we are right where we left off.

And those giant spiders? Scenes with huge spiders scared me back in "King Kong " . Is this some kind of attempt to "exile " them?

Jackson : Well, giant spiders are in the book.

Yes, it's true, they are in the book.

Jackson : Firstly, they are in the book, secondly, I hate spiders. So that was especially fun. In The Return of the King, we had Shelob, the giant spider. Yes, spiders are terrible, especially if they are the size of a cow. Why, no matter what size they are, they are still terrible. And these spider nests, these webs, phew, I can't stand them. I tried to create such spiders that I myself would be scared.

Let's talk about controversial points. Tauriel has caused a lot of controversy among fans. How did you respond to this? How did they react?

Jackson : Well, there is nothing surprising here, there will always be people who have only heard something somewhere, but have not watched the movie and do not know what we do. So, the reaction of each is his choice. I think people who watch the movie will understand. Movies and books are completely different things. The book has the voice of the author - Tolkien, in the case of The Hobbit - this is the voice that explains the story.

In movies, I don't give explanations. I don't talk, well, except for the commentary lines on the DVD, I'm not a narrator. The filmmaker is not a narrator in the sense that the author of a book is. So, in the movie, everything is told through the mouths of the characters. It's the only way to tell a story in a film. And this is where heroes are needed. In order to tell this story, characters are needed in addition to the thirteen dwarfs, the hobbit and the magician. And the elves? The elven kingdom in the book is very impressive, but Tolkien doesn't even mention the name of the elf king. He is unnamed, he is simply called "king of the elves". Later, in The Lord of the Rings, we learn that his name is Thranduil, that he has a son, Legolas. We will all find out later. And we thought, "Well, we already know that, why not add them to the story."

We made them part of the story. And Tauriel was the third part of that equation, because dramatic stories are often best told from three perspectives.

All three have different points of view. Legolas, Tauriel and Thranduil represent completely different views within the elven political system.

You have already devoted eighteen years of your life to Tolkien - about that much, right?

Jackson : Yes, it looks like it.

How do you feel about this? Did you plan for it to happen this way?

Jackson : No. Of course, I am grateful to fate, because I grew up in a country where there was no film industry. When I was growing up in the sixties, there was no film industry in New Zealand at all. Nobody made films. I had only a crazy dream and a crazy love for cinema, especially fantasy films. I adored King Kong, Ray Harryhausen and all that sort of thing. This is how my childhood passed. And so now, when I have the opportunity to film these amazing stories, and in New Zealand, I feel that I am making my childhood dream come true. And it doesn’t matter that sometimes it’s hard, that sometimes you have really stressful and stressful days. At such moments, I remember myself as a seven-year-old kid, and I understand that this guy managed to make his dream come true. Am I not lucky?

Let's talk about your work with WETA . Digital effects are just one side of the film, the other is practical effects. The skillful combination of these aspects characterizes a somewhat scientific approach to filmmaking. Would you say that your approach to making films is exactly balancing the latest digital technology with real cinema?

Jackson : The digital effects are incredible right now. Since I was a child dreaming of making films, there has been a revolution. Now you can put anything you can imagine on the screen. Close your eyes, imagine the image, then embody. It wasn't always like that. Even fifteen or twenty years ago it was impossible. For the filmmaker who wants to put the audience in a world full of amazing, fantastical things that don't exist in real life, digital cinema provides an amazing set of tools.

But at the same time, I think that we should strive to make everything look as realistic as possible on the screen. To make everything look organic. When working with a visual image, you need to make it as close to reality as possible. When we work with digital material, we try to... I try to shoot digital material on a camera, on a handheld camera, so that it's not very mechanical. I spray water and dirt on the lens. I'm trying to give the impression that the camera is in action, even though it's not.

So with all the richness of digital effects, our task today is to bring them closer to reality. I think with time we will succeed. But there is still a lot of work ahead.

Last question. You probably need a whole army to shoot this kind of tapes? Do you miss the days of movies like In Bad Taste and Dead Man? Do you ever want to go back to those days?

Jackson : You know, I got a little bit of that on the set of The Desolation of Smaug because the last 30 minutes of the film are full of digital scenes that I filmed with a motion capture camera. I only had a small camera, and besides me, there were only technicians on the site, and there was no team. I filmed everything by myself. So I remembered the days of the Super 8 camera. I definitely liked it, it was really cool. I appreciate everyone who helped me make the film, everyone has their own role. Alone, I couldn't have created all this amazing props, all these sets. I can't do everything alone.

There were times when I tried to do everything on my own.
